Chapter 7 Happiness in Progress

"How come there's such a big turtle?"

"It's perfectly normal to have turtles in the river."

Lin Chuan tilted his head and looked at the cage upside down. Wow, a large turtle weighing three or four pounds was lying on its back, waving its claws.

"Mom, how much do turtles cost per pound these days?"

"Who would want this stuff? It takes hours to stew and it doesn't taste good. It's a waste of time. Even if you give it away, nobody would want it."

In later generations, a wild turtle could cost thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars to buy, but now nobody wants it?

Lin Chuan thought about it and felt it made sense. There were plenty of these things now; every household could find a few when harvesting rice.

They don't know how to cook, they only know how to stew, stewing the meat for hours until it's mushy and you just drink the soup. The worst part is that it doesn't taste good, so nobody really wants it.

However, it might not be the case in the county town. I can go and ask later. After all, everyone knows this stuff is nutritious, so it should be able to sell.

The turtle is placed upside down and weighed down to prevent it from running away. People who have never seen a turtle think it is slow, but in fact, this thing is not slow at all. It can disappear in the blink of an eye if you are not careful.

Lin Chuan sorts the fish into three parts: the big fish are put into sacks, the small fish are put aside to be released into the pond to be raised again, and there are also river shrimp, which are also good stuff. They are dried and stir-fried with chili peppers, which is super delicious with rice.

"The color of this carp is really beautiful, a bright yellow."

"Wow, brother, look! What a huge bluefish!"

"These bream are big, and so are the crucian carp; they're perfect for pan-frying."

"Brother, turtle, there's another turtle."

The three chatted happily as they picked up the fish, while Lin Chuan remained silent, focusing solely on emptying the fish trap. The trap opening was small, making emptying the fish a difficult task.

Lin Chuan didn't feel tired at all; what he was pouring out wasn't fish, it was money.

Finally, they put the bags together and weighed them. The two sacks of fish weighed a total of 133 jin (66.5 catties). Lin Chuan looked at the number with suspicion.

It's not that there were too few, but rather too many. The four turtles we caught were unweighed, but they looked to weigh about ten pounds each.

Several kilograms of fish fry were released into the pond, along with two or three kilograms of shrimp. Several kilograms of bream and crucian carp were kept for personal consumption, bringing the total to well over the 152 kilograms indicated by the system.

The system couldn't possibly be wrong. Lin Chuan thought about it for a moment and figured that the system wouldn't recognize anything less than one ounce, so calculating the weight would be reasonable.

After emptying the cage, Lin Chuan went to the kitchen, grabbed a piece of meat, and added a piece of pork liver. He said to his mother:

"Mom, pack the meat up, I'll go borrow the car."

I was supposed to borrow the car last night, but I forgot. I don't know if anyone else is awake yet; it's barely dawn.

Liangzi's real name is Wang Liang. He is Lin Chuan's childhood friend and classmate, but he only completed half a semester of junior high school.

Nine-year compulsory education has been implemented for several years, but in rural areas, where there is no mandatory education, a very high percentage of students with poor conditions drop out of junior high school.

Lin's father was a carpenter, and Liangzi's father and Lin's father were in a relationship as apprentices and brothers, and the two families had always had a good relationship.

Both of them had a drinking problem and smoked quite a bit. In the end, they both passed away in the same year, which can be considered a fulfillment of their brotherhood.

The only difference is that before going down there, Lin's father built a big house for his family, while Wang's father added three major items to his family's home.

Wang is a prominent surname in Qiaotouwan. The Wang family's house is located in the middle of the bay. As Lin Chuan walked along, he heard sporadic dog barks.

Several years after the land was distributed to individual households, most families had some surplus grain, but not many families kept dogs. Lin Chuan thought he would get one later to make his home more lively.

Wang Liang's family also has a dog. His mother, Zhao Chunlan, is quite good-looking and has been harassed by some hooligans in the village.

"Woof, woof."

"Don't bark, Da Huang, shh."

It was late. The lights inside came on, and a figure walked to the window and whispered:

Who is it?

"Aunt Lan, it's me, Xiao Chuan. I'm here to talk to you about something."

"Wait a minute."

"Xiao Chuan, why are you up so early? Xiao Liang isn't up yet."

"Auntie, I found a wild boar on the mountain yesterday. I'll give you some to try."

"You silly child, just keep it for yourself. You have a lot of family members."

"It won't keep in this weather, I'm planning to take it to the county to sell it. Can I borrow your bicycle, Auntie?"

"It's good to sell it, otherwise it'll be a waste to let it spoil. I'll come and push the cart for you."

As Lin Chuan was about to leave with his cart, Zhao Chunlan gave him three apples. He didn't stand on ceremony, said goodbye, and went back.

When they got home, the meat had already been packed in sacks. Lin Chuan tied a wooden board to the back seat with wire, and the meat was tied to the board, while the fish hung on both sides.

Lin Chuan was still not at ease, so he wrapped it several more times with rope. He couldn't be careless; this was the hope for a better life. If it fell apart halfway and got dirty, it wouldn't fetch a good price.

While the car was being tied up, Mom cooked rice and stir-fried some meat with chili peppers. She didn't pack all the meat; at Lin Chuan's request, she left some behind because the temperature in the well was low, and it wouldn't spoil even after a few days.

Lin Chuan and Lin Feng started eating, while Lin Xue watched longingly from the side. It wasn't that they wouldn't give her any, but she was just munching on an apple.

Lin Chuan stuffed a piece of meat into her mouth, and the little girl squinted her eyes happily, eating with relish.

Lin Chuan found it amusing and would occasionally feed her. Lin Xue ate the apple and meat with relish, seemingly unaware of the flavor of the combination.

After finishing the fish, Lin Chuan poured several basins of water on the fish bag to prolong the fish's lifespan as much as possible. Then, he used his foot to prop up the car and patted the front bar to signal Lin Feng to get on.

Lin Feng didn't hesitate; these days, it's perfectly normal to have someone ride on the front bar of a bicycle.

"Mom, we're leaving. We might not be back for lunch. You guys eat first, don't wait for us."

"Okay, be careful on the road."

Be careful, that's not the case. Lin Chuan has a slingshot with him. With his current skills, apart from its lethality, its suppressive power is no different from a gun.

The reason Lin Chuan brought a slingshot was because he had read novels in his previous life that the area before the millennium was not peaceful and there were road bullies. He didn't know much about his area, as he had never encountered one in his previous life.

My mother knew nothing about this either. She rarely went to the town, let alone the village. Her words of caution were just a subconscious remark.

Lin Xue watched longingly, but she didn't insist on going. She knew what was permissible and what wasn't.

Lin Chuan waved to her: "Xiao Xue, wait for me at home. I'll bring you candy when I get back."

"Okay, brother, come back soon. Be a good girl at home."

Children's happiness is so simple; when they heard Lin Chuan say he would bring candy, their expressions instantly brightened.

Lin Feng couldn't wait any longer and urged:

"Brother, hurry up, it'll be broad daylight soon."

"Dele, let's go."

Lin Chuan kicked off the train, carrying his hopes and dreams towards the county town.

It was early morning, before it was fully light, and the temperature was still a bit low, but Lin Chuan didn't care. He had improved his physical fitness and felt great.

Lin Feng's ears turned red from being blown around, but he didn't care. He kept talking excitedly, asking Lin Chuan all sorts of questions. He had never been to the county town before.

Lin Chuan had only been there twice on the surface, but in his previous life he had gone there countless times, knowing it all very well.
