Chapter 9 The Slingshot Takes Over
During a brief moment of conversation, Lin Chuan learned that the middle-aged man's name was Li Jianguo. He felt like he had heard the name before, but he couldn't quite place it.
Ignoring the opinions of those around him, Lin Chuan quickly packed his things. He had already heard that the thugs were coming, but he still insisted on keeping them around. Wasn't that just asking for trouble?
While they were tidying up, Lin Feng suddenly tugged at Lin Chuan:
"Brother, brother, those people are here."
However, a group of about ten people approached from a distance, each holding a stick and walking angrily towards them. The one leading the group was the man with the pointed face and monkey-like cheeks who had been kicked earlier.
What a blunder! He should have left immediately after kicking the guy. Lin Chuan thought the guy wasn't very ruthless and assumed he was just an ordinary person who liked to take advantage of others, so he didn't leave right away. He never expected to get into trouble now.
But what's done is done, and Lin Chuan wasn't afraid at all. He took out his slingshot and gestured for Lin Feng to continue tying.
"Kid, you can't escape. I'll beat you to death today."
From a distance, the arrogant voice of the man with the pointed beak could be heard, and upon hearing this, the onlookers dispersed.
Lin Chuan stood still, pulled back his slingshot, and fired, aiming at the knees of those people.
The first one to suffer was the man with the pointed beak. He was walking quickly this way when suddenly he felt a sharp pain in his knee, the stick slipped from his hand, and he screamed in agony while clutching his knee.
The power of dried mud balls and pebbles is not much different. The knee is the weakest part of the body, and it hurts half to death if it is hit by a table normally, let alone being hit by a slingshot.
Lin Chuan was holding back, not because he wanted to be lenient, but because he was afraid of really causing trouble for the person and attracting the attention of the authorities.
"Damn it, kill him. He has a broken slingshot. Let's see how many times he can hit anything."
Seeing the man with the pointed mouth scream in pain, the man's brother pointed his stick at Lin Chuan and led his men to rush over.
But after only two steps, he followed in the footsteps of the man with the pointed beak.
Lin Chuan's slingshot is at max level. Max level means not only that it's accurate, but also that it's fast.
Before the bowstring had even fully recoiled, he reached out and grabbed the leather pouch. The most time-consuming part was actually getting the "bullets" out of the pocket.
None of the nine people could run more than five meters before Lin Chuan knocked them all to the ground, leaving the onlookers dumbfounded.
They had seen people who were good at using slingshots, but they had never imagined someone as good as Lin Chuan.
"Wow, that's awesome! This guy's slingshot aim is really accurate."
"That's incredibly accurate. They were at least twenty meters away, and it didn't even take them half a minute to fall to the ground. That's probably the best you can do with a gun."
"He's ruthless. I knew he was no ordinary guy when he pointed a knife at the thugs, and I was right."
Lin Chuan ignored the surrounding chatter and didn't approach the thugs to mock or threaten them. He helped Lin Feng tie up the car, preparing to leave this troublesome place as soon as possible.
The thugs had recovered by now, but they weren't quite there yet; they were still walking with a limp.
They helped each other walk a little further away, but the more they thought about it, the angrier they became. From a distance, they shouted:
"You just wait, kid. I'll kill you next time."
No sooner had the words been spoken than a voice rang in my ears:
"Who are you going to kill?"
"Kill him, ah, Officer Liu."
The thug turned his head and saw a gloomy face, and was so frightened that he fell to the ground.
Lin Chuan heard the shout and looked over. He saw the thugs say something harsh, then look back at the people behind them. One of them fell to the ground, and the others quickly squatted down as well, with their hands covering their heads.
Behind the thug were four people, three men and one woman. Lin Chuan recognized the woman; she was his older sister, Lin Hongmei.
Yeah, honey, it's no use telling anyone.
At this moment, Lin Hongmei waved to him, and Lin Chuan gestured for Lin Feng to push the cart and walk over with him. Before they even got close, they heard Lin Hongmei say:
"Old Liu, this is the young man I told you about. I still owe him three yuan and fifty cents. This bastard tried to steal his fish before but failed, and now he's brought people to get revenge. Don't let them off easily."
"Sister, my name is Lin Chuan, and this is my younger brother Lin Feng. As for the money, it's just a gift from your brother to you."
Upon hearing Lin Chuan's address, the others looked at him strangely, and after a few seconds of silence, Old Liu finally spoke:
"Hello, I am Liu Jianshe, Comrade Lin's wife. Here is three yuan and fifty cents, please keep it."
Lin Chuan waved his hands repeatedly: "It's just wild game we hunted ourselves, it's not worth much. It's only right to show respect to my sister, there's no need to pay."
"As a great man once said, 'Never take a needle or thread from the people.' I'm a police officer, and I can't make that kind of mistake. Here, keep the money."
Public Security Bureau, Li Jianguo, Wang Jianshe, and Lin Chuan finally understood why the names Li Jianguo and Liu Jianshe sounded familiar. Weren't they the two leaders during the 96 crackdown?
"What's wrong with you?"
Liu Jianshe stuffed the money into Lin Chuan's hand, and seeing him staring blankly at him, he couldn't help but ask.
"I... I just got a little excited to see the police. My childhood dream was to become a police officer, punish bad guys, and serve the people."
"Haha, young man, you have ambition. You can take down ten people by yourself, so your skills are definitely not a problem. But there are some other requirements for being a police officer. What is your education level? How old are you?"
"I'm not very skilled; I used a slingshot to fight them. I just finished junior high and I'm seventeen years old this year."
Lin Chuan finished speaking nervously, fearing that Liu Jianshe would say he would report for duty tomorrow. He thought it would be so much more enjoyable to stay at home and hunt, while being a policeman meant being subject to control.
In Liu Jianshe's eyes, Lin Chuan looked uneasy after speaking, as if he was afraid of not getting the job, which improved his impression of Lin Chuan even more.
"Unfortunately, you're not old enough yet. Come find me when you turn eighteen, and I'll take you to take the exam. You can try then."
"By the way, you said you subdued them using only a slingshot. Can I see it for myself?"
"Old Liu," Lin Chuan was about to show off that befriending Liu Jianshe would be of no benefit to him, but Lin Hongmei interrupted him.
"Xiao Chuan's goods haven't sold out yet, don't delay things, what if they spoil when it gets hot?"
"Yes, yes, it's my fault. Xiao Chuan, you sell your goods first. We were just about to buy some fish, so we'll sell them where you are now. I'll talk to the market security team, and if you encounter any thugs again, you can contact them."
Liu Jianshe, who was he? He saw that Lin Chuan had tied the bag to the car and immediately understood what was going on. He solved Lin Chuan's worries as soon as he opened his mouth.
Lin Chuan was overjoyed, knowing he wouldn't have to worry about encountering such disgusting things again. He quickly returned to the previous spot, untied the sack, and continued selling.
The thugs following behind them were all acquaintances. They didn't dare to run away before Liu Jianshe gave the order, and two of them even went up to help untie the ropes.
Liu Jianshe and two other policemen each bought two fish. When Lin Chuan weighed the fish for the others, the scales were turned outwards to show that he was not cheating.
When they weighed it for them, they turned it inwards and underreported the weight by a few kilograms, charging them a total of ninety-eight yuan.
"Hey, Xiaochuan, you still have turtles? Sell them to me, my mom's been feeling weak lately, I want to make her some soup to help her recover."
"Sister, you can't sell this. This turtle is a gift I was planning to give to a relative."
