Chapter 22 Project Leader

In Dasheng's project management system, the HRBP's responsibility is to assist project leaders in driving project implementation within their respective teams. Project manager Zhang Wei is the primary person responsible, followed by project team member Yuehua, while Lin Yue, as Zhang Wei's direct supervisor, will bear certain management responsibilities.

Zhang Wei and Lin Yue are currently in a state of superficial harmony but deep discord. Zhang Wei is worried that Lin Yue will find fault with him and complain to the boss, so he deliberately does not keep Lin Yue informed about the progress and details of the project. He only touches on it briefly during each weekly meeting, and Lin Yue never asks about it.

This is an obvious project; you can roughly guess what it is at a glance, and Lin Yue is also waiting for the right opportunity.

During the weekly meeting that day, Zhang Wei reported as usual: "The training program is progressing smoothly, and all departments are very supportive. At present, there is no need for internal departmental coordination, nor is there anything that requires the boss's support."

Lin Yue's lips curled slightly, and she suddenly said in a calm yet unquestionable tone, "Please share the training data at the meeting. We need to compile the participation rates of each department, and for some professional courses, we also need to check the exam pass rates. If things are going well, the team and President Sheng need to see the data, not just hear your verbal report."

Zhang Wei was visibly taken aback. He hadn't expected Lin Yue, who usually neglected his projects, to make such a difficult request at today's weekly meeting. What was most infuriating was that her request was actually quite reasonable. Of course, he didn't have that kind of data; the project wasn't progressing smoothly, so he hadn't compiled any of the evaluation sheets for each session.

Although he hadn't reported the project's progress to Lin Yue separately, he would intentionally or unintentionally mention to Shengxing that the project was going smoothly. Bosses generally don't pay attention to details, but today Lin Yue said she wanted to reveal the template for quantifying the results, and if he didn't take the bait, it would be difficult to salvage the situation.

Zhang Wei gritted his teeth and said, "President Lin, of course I have the data you mentioned, but the project isn't finished yet. I plan to present the specific data when we do a project review later."

Looking at Zhang Wei's unwavering composure, Lin Yue thought that in terms of mental fortitude and quick thinking, he certainly deserved the title of an excellent training instructor. It was just a pity that this man, having stood on the podium and under the spotlight for so long, had become arrogant and completely forgotten his own limitations.

So, Lin Yue projected the implementation schedule from the training program plan onto the conference room's TV screen, guiding everyone to look at the schedule Zhang Wei had previously shared. Clearing her throat, she said, "It's clear that according to the timeline, we've already progressed to two-thirds. The participation rate and evaluation data I just mentioned are data that needs to be completed immediately after each training session."

"All projects are not reviewed at the last minute, but rather the process needs to be synchronized and feedback provided to project team members and the boss in a timely manner. This way, problems can be adjusted in time, otherwise there will be no opportunity to make corrections during the final review."

These words left Zhang Wei speechless, and the atmosphere in the meeting room grew increasingly tense. The team members looked at each other, but no one uttered a sound.

Sheng Xing suddenly turned to Lin Yue and asked, "Doesn't Zhang Wei usually report on the project progress to you? You're the head of human resources; you need to be aware of the progress of all projects."

Lin Yue knew that Shengxing had already realized the project wasn't progressing smoothly. The fact that Shengxing asked this question at the all-staff meeting meant he was prepared to blame both sides equally. Logically, Lin Yue should have first dealt with his own subordinates and then simply reported the results to them.

Lin Yue scanned the room, her gaze finally settling on Zhang Wei. Zhang Wei seemed to be waiting to see how she would react, since at this point, neither pulling him into the blame nor shifting all the responsibility onto him would be a good strategy.

Lin Yue didn't directly answer Sheng Xing's question. Instead, she skillfully navigated the Apple computer's touchscreen, quickly opening a document. It clearly displayed the current training data for each team.

Lin Yue then gave a clear report on the project's progress: "Two-thirds of the time has passed, but the training progress of each team is less than half, and the participation rate of each team is less than 60%. The average course rating is also very low, with the most common comments being 'uninteresting content and rigid format.' The evaluation was not a required field in the questionnaire, but everyone was willing to spend time and energy to give suggestions on the project. This proves that everyone's willingness to participate in the training is still very high, and it also shows that the project was done well at the beginning. It was only in the later follow-up that problems arose, which is why everyone is dissatisfied with the organization and content."

Lin Yue obtained the data an hour before the meeting, which was not difficult for her. Since the HRBPs were her own people, she instructed Yuehua to create a rating sheet using Wenjuanxing (a survey platform), and then have the corresponding HRBPs of each team send it to their respective team groups.

For the business team, this is something that can be done in 5 minutes by moving a finger, and they don't care whether the data ends up with Lin Yue or Zhang Wei. In their view, it's all a matter for one department.

Everyone was intently studying the data. Sheng Xing frowned, despising any act of deception or cover-up. He turned to Zhang Wei and demanded, "Is this what you meant by 'progress going smoothly'?"

Zhang Wei's face immediately turned bright red. He looked at Lin Yue with resentment in his eyes, believing that Lin Yue had deliberately embarrassed him in front of everyone, completely forgetting his own dereliction of duty.

Seeing that the time was right, Lin Yue took over from Sheng Xing and said, "President Sheng, as Zhang Wei's direct superior, I also have a responsibility. I will use the remaining time to catch up on the project's progress and complete it with high quality and quantity."

Lin Yue's logic in reporting to superiors is always to present the conclusion first; only by delivering results can she strive for resources.

She paused for a moment, then continued, "In order to achieve this goal, I would like to apply to President Sheng to change the project leader. Zhang Wei is better at being a lecturer, and I plan to hand over the project management work to Yuehua and Xiaoyu in the team."

Yuehua was the chief project manager, and Xiaoyu was the executive project manager. She had discussed this with both Yuehua and Xiaoyu beforehand. Xiaoyu was already very interested in training, and her personality was suitable for project management. As for controlling the overall project quality, Yuehua, with her more stable core, could handle it. At the same time, she was certain that Shengxing would agree to her arrangement; with so many people on the team, he needed to project an image of a boss who would delegate authority.

Throughout the entire process, Lin Yue did not utter a single word of criticism against Zhang Wei. Instead, she focused on solving the problem, demonstrating her leadership qualities as a manager and ensuring the achievement of the goals.

Sheng Xing was actually not very satisfied with Lin Yue's approach, feeling that she was using a radical method to expose the problem, but he couldn't offer any reason to object to the matter itself.

Although his expression was somewhat grim, he still nodded and said, "Then let's proceed as you suggested." His gaze swept over Yuehua and Xiaoyu, finally settling on Lin Yue before adding, "I don't care who the PM is; I only need you to provide results regarding HR matters."

Lin Yue smiled brightly. Yuehua and Xiaoyu would definitely do their best, because the three of them had already discussed the new plan together last night, and with Shi Potian's help, the project was sure to be a success.

After the meeting ended, Sheng Xing suddenly said, "Lin Yue, you and Zhang Wei stay behind for a bit. Everyone else can leave."
