Dawn of Life
Chapter 6 The Traitor
In the days that followed, Lin Yue worked even harder. She knew her life couldn't afford any more changes; she had to succeed on this project, earn Shengxing's trust, and keep her job.
The "Competency Model" project was led by Lin Yue as the chief PM, with five senior business partners (BPs) in the HRBP team serving as execution PMs, responsible for implementing the project within their respective business units (BUs).
The first phase of the project is nearing completion, but an unexpected problem has arisen. HRBP Li Xiaoyu told Lin Yue that the technical team leader is extremely uncooperative. No matter what she says, the other party remains unmoved. She has tried everything from flattery to persistent persuasion, but nothing works.
This stage involves writing out the "competency requirements" for each position and level. For example, in technical positions, the required abilities for junior, intermediate, and senior technicians are different, and the specific requirements must first be written out.
The drafting team is led by the team leader, or designated by the team leader as the most capable person in the position. Next, job titles are assigned to the team members, and the draft is reviewed and finalized by a review panel consisting of HR, the direct supervisor, and the relevant department head.
Because of the honor of being "the most professionally capable", apart from Yin Jie, the other writers were very cooperative.
Xiaoyu tentatively asked, "Sister Lin, Yinjie reports directly to Vice President Liu. Should we go see Vice President Liu?"
In collaborative situations, directly pressuring superiors is a poor strategy. For Xiaoyu, a seasoned HRBP, to offer such a suggestion suggests that things are truly unmanageable this time. Lin Yue had a bad feeling; was Yin Jie's lack of cooperation instigated by Liu Zheng?
So she asked Xiaoyu to arrange a time for Yinjie, and she would accompany Xiaoyu to find Yinjie to talk again and find out what his current bottleneck was.
Yin Jie was difficult to get an appointment with, and he came up with all sorts of excuses. Lin Yue had no choice but to move her computer directly to his workstation and wait there. Yin Jie had no other option but to reluctantly sit down in the conference room with them.
After several rounds of back and forth, the expressions of all three became serious. Yin Jie finally said impatiently, "Who has what position and what salary? Didn't you already decide that beforehand? Why are you pretending and making us write the standards? We have so many projects to rush to meet deadlines; we don't have time to put on this show!"
Yin Jie rose through the ranks from a frontline technical staff member to a manager, and he's generally a pragmatic person. He did sometimes get bogged down in details regarding the solution, but as long as the solution itself was sound, he was always cooperative.
But today's confrontation is clearly a deliberate attempt by someone to sow discord behind the scenes.
So, Lin Yue didn't beat around the bush and asked him directly if he had heard any rumors. As she spoke, she opened the solution on her computer, wanting to go over the logic with him again.
As a result, Yin Jie became even more impatient, looking at Lin Yue with disdain: "Didn't you say this in the meeting at 'Full Moon Pavilion' last Friday night? The beginning was all just a formality, and the final decision was made by the general manager. Everyone knows Qin Lan is gone, and you want to be the director, so you're using this empty stuff to boost your performance bonus?"
Lin Yue recalled that last Friday, when she was discussing project plans with the five senior business partners of the team, she did mention: "If there are any controversial personnel who cannot be decided, the personnel need to give a performance review, and the general manager's office will participate in the evaluation. The general manager will make the final decision." This meticulous statement was ultimately misrepresented as the boss wanting to have a one-man show and HR getting projects to earn performance bonuses.
Just as she was about to explain, a message popped up on her phone. It was a WeChat message from Gao Ming reminding her to go to the Civil Affairs Bureau to complete the divorce procedures the next day. Time flies; the one-month cooling-off period was already over. She stared at the message, somewhat stunned.
Then Gao Ming called again, and Lin Yue glanced at it and hung up immediately. A text message popped up again: "Tomorrow we'll go to the agency and list the house so you can live here for a year. Otherwise, you'll have to move out now."
Yin Jie was inexplicably angry when he saw that she seemed distracted.
His team consists of Java developers, front-end developers, and testers. In recent years, the internet has been stagnant while AI has developed rapidly, and much code can be done through AI. Although the job titles include the word "technical," everyone actually calls them "code monkeys," which are essentially code movers. Apart from those who can become architects, most of them don't have much technical expertise and rely on physical labor to make a living.
Coupled with the company's current situation, the team members are in a very negative mood. Several projects have been delayed, and the projects that have been launched are frequently plagued with bugs.
He's already fed up with being caught between his boss and employees every day, and now HR is constantly pressuring him to write this and that. He hasn't even finished his development tasks for today, and Lin Yue already cornered him and dragged him into a meeting. Now she's constantly checking her phone, leaving him hanging.
The more he thought about it, the angrier he became, so he vented his anger on Lin Yue, saying increasingly harsh things: "You have no ability at all, you only know how to bully others, and you think you can act like a big shot just because you have a feather in your hand..."
Lin Yue stared at Yin Jie's face, and for a moment, she seemed to see Gao Ming's face as well. The two faces kept intertwining. The same coldness, ruthlessness, and aggressiveness.
Suddenly I felt a rush of blood to my head.
She stood up abruptly, tripping over her chair with a loud thud. "Do as you please, write it or don't." With that, she turned and strode away, leaving Yin Jie and Xiao Yu stunned.
In her years as an HR professional, Lin Yue had often encountered situations like this—being misunderstood or even criticized to her face. However, the number of times she lost control of her emotions like this was extremely rare. Then she heard Yin Jie shout loudly behind her, "Are you out of your mind? What kind of attitude is that?!" followed by the sound of Xiao Yu's footsteps as she walked out.
The meeting room wasn't very soundproof, and the people sitting on the side could hear everything clearly. They were also peeking in their direction.
Lin Yue returned to her workstation, picked up her water glass, tilted her head back, and gulped it down. Her wildly beating heart calmed down a bit. Turning around, she met Xiao Yu's anxious gaze: "Sister Lin, are you alright?"
Lin Yue said, "Don't worry, I'll handle Yin Jie. You can focus on other things first."
During this time, Lin Yue concealed her inner feelings very well, and no one could tell what she was going through. At most, someone would occasionally tease her jokingly, saying that she was being a little too competitive in order to show herself in front of the new boss.
But today, she went there to solve a problem, and somehow it ended up as an argument.
Qin Lan once told Lin Yue that it is necessary for HR to have healthy conflicts with business departments. However, no matter how fierce you appear on the outside, you must be calm on the inside. "Arguing" is just a means to get results, but you must have absolute control over the current situation and be able to be flexible and adaptable.
Lin Yue wondered if she could explain herself this way if her boss blamed her, saying she was just using a communication strategy. However, based on everyone's understanding of her, this wasn't her usual work style. Her colleagues had always called her "a gentle knife," skilled at appealing to emotions and reason, expressing the HR's firmest stance in the softest tone.
Yin Jie's incident made Lin Yue wary.
Because he was able to describe the time and place of their department meeting so clearly. It's unclear whether someone deliberately leaked the meeting content or if it was just something they casually discussed with a third party, and then the third party distorted the story.
