Chapter 107 Kinetic Energy Disruption Tactics
Chapter 107 Kinetic Energy Disruption Tactics
"Beautiful lady." Even while mingling among a group of residents of Old Bridge, Luca, relying on his journalistic intuition, still managed to find the person connected to the incident. Since the other party was a beautiful woman, his French romantic nature once again prevailed; he straightened his tie and walked over with a broad smile.
While Luca struck up a conversation with Darcy, he inwardly grumbled about Salomon's unreliability. The arcane mage had ordered Phoenix to take him from the airport to Old Bridge after he disembarked, just in time for S.H.I.E.L.D.'s evacuation. Although the timing was perfect, traversing the Aether dimension without any protection was still quite difficult for an ordinary person to endure.
"Hi!" Darcy turned around and saw a tall, handsome man greeting her. The sudden approach startled her, so much so that she forgot she was wearing a red knitted hat. She frantically tried to brush her hair back. This was completely futile; her hair became even more disheveled, with many strands clinging to the hat due to static electricity.
Clearly, Luca's charm had worked. Whether as a nightclub playboy or a reporter, Luca's persuasive skills were top-notch. Under his subtle persuasion, Darcy revealed everything he knew, including her and Jane Foster's encounter with Saul. This information alone was enough for Luca to know that his trip hadn't been in vain. There was only one small problem: when Darcy, Jane Foster, and Eric Sullivan were taken away by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Darcy was still trying to exchange numbers with Luca, which almost made him a target for the agents as well. However, Luca still managed to escape the agents' sights and the crowd of townspeople. He found (stole) a car and drove in the direction Darcy had gone.
His intuition told him that what he needed was there.
Jane Foster felt something was off. Although Thor had broken into S.H.I.E.L.D.'s research facility, they had no proof of his true identity. When S.H.I.E.L.D. contacted them, Jane Foster assumed Thor's notebook theft had been discovered. She was about to argue when her mentor stopped her.
Eric Shavig glanced at Saul, who was focused entirely on Jane Foster.
He was now somewhat certain of Thor's true identity, not only because Thor was a heavy drinker and a skilled fighter, but also because Jane Foster's analysis was logical. Knowing this was no easy task, Eric Scharvig advocated going with S.H.I.E.L.D.; his connections told him about their capabilities. Since S.H.I.E.L.D. wanted to protect them from this place, they had no choice but to comply. However, he still harbored some reservations—he secretly told his students and Darcy never to mention Thor's identity to anyone in front of S.H.I.E.L.D. None of them knew how S.H.I.E.L.D. would treat an alien prince, and Eric Scharvig didn't mind speculating about S.H.I.E.L.D. with the utmost malice.
His thinking was correct. In fact, even Nick Fury had his own ulterior motives when he learned Thor's identity. If Salomon hadn't used a combination of coaxing and deception, Fury would have already taken action against Thor. Nick Fury projected his own experience onto Thor, which is why he hadn't widely publicized Thor's identity before. Now, even if those politicians knew Thor's identity, they didn't have time to do anything.
When the Rainbow Bridge first descended, the American troops stationed in the desert almost mistook it for an enemy attack. However, when the reconnaissance drone flew over the Warriors Four, Thor recognized them and quickly identified them. Agent Coulson also notified the American forces to abandon the attack and prepare for battle. He also sent a vehicle to pick up Vostagg, Fandral, Sif, and Hogan.
After Thor introduced the four warriors to Jane Foster, they finally got down to business. The news they brought shocked Thor, as it was completely different from what Loki had said. Odin was alive and well, merely in a deep slumber—Odin's Slumber could repair Odin's body, making him younger and stronger; the so-called permanent exile was nonexistent. Thor realized once again that this was another of Loki's pranks, only this time the consequences were far worse than before.
Agent Coulson observed silently, analyzing the relationships among the group. Sif was his primary focus, because in mythology, she was Thor's wife, but now Thor was secretly in love with Jane Foster on Earth. Agent Coulson quietly reported the Warriors Four and this situation to his superiors, along with Sif's reaction—she wasn't unaware of Thor's feelings, but she didn't even glance at Jane Foster, as if she were invisible.
"Is Agent Coulson some kind of soap opera specialist? Why would he care about something like this?" Salomon scoffed on the plane, continuing to text Luca and instruct him on his next move.
Nick Fury was somewhat disgruntled. "It's part of agent training; observing interpersonal relationships is a mandatory course for every agent," he said. "Agent Coulson is an excellent agent; he did a great job."
"See? Agent Coulson's intelligence is exactly the same as what I said." Salomon looked down at his phone screen and said, "This all proves the accuracy of my intelligence—you must think so too."
"Do you have the ability to read minds?" Nick Fury said dismissively. "Then your danger level has increased once again."
"I don't care about that." Salomon sent the last text message and put his phone away. Not long after, the Rainbow Bridge dropped again, and the drone transmitted images in real time to Nick Fury's computer.
"What is this? Iron Man from Asgard?" Nick Fury asked, pointing to the Destroyer armor that was closing in on the image.
"You can begin your attack now," Salomon said. "Don't wait for the Destroyer armor to get close; it's not something ordinary people can withstand."
The Destroyer Armor is the guardian of Asgard's vaults. This armor possesses an immense history and formidable power. Odin, the Allfather, used this armor, imbued with the power of all the gods of Earth, to repel the Celestials. Loki, wielding Gungnir, could barely activate the Destroyer Armor and couldn't unleash its full power. Even so, this armor is beyond the capabilities of human technology.
Salomon didn't want to explain too much to Nick Fury about this matter, not only because it involved extremely complex secrets, but also because he didn't want to ramble on endlessly. After Nick Fury pressed him for a few more questions, he wisely began making military deployments. He knew that if Salomon didn't want to talk about something, he certainly wouldn't.
Nick Fury ordered Agent Coulson to stop the Warriors Four from charging into battle. Agent Coulson relayed the order perfectly. "Guests from Asgard," he said, "we will protect you. Let our soldiers try; they are all brave and good men."
"They're my friends. Although Agent Coulson said a lot of things I didn't understand, I know he's a good man," Saul said, trying to reassure them. "They're willing to help us. If they fail, we can always go back to fighting."
"That's right! Let them see Vostagg's bravery!" The easygoing and portly Vostagg had already eaten three servings of standard U.S. military rations during this time, and he was about to eat his fourth.
Fandall agreed with Vostagg, wiping his rapier, eager to try it out.
"But with this primitive technology, they can't possibly defeat the Destroyer armor." Sif was more level-headed, while Hogan remained silent, clearly supporting her idea. The Warriors Four had always obeyed Thor's orders, and this time was no exception.
Nick Fury started with simple weapons. Tank shells, aided by fire control radar, accurately struck the Destroyer's armor, sending the silver armor tumbling apart with a deafening roar. The first attempt was a success, prompting cheers from the officers in command—alien technology wasn't so scary after all!
But soon, the Destroyer armor stood up, its gleaming silver surface completely undamaged. The footage from the drone was like a pair of cold hands gripping the officers' throats; the cheers abruptly ceased, and they could hardly believe their eyes. Nick Fury, however, was not surprised at all. He had already anticipated this outcome. Ground command ordered several tanks to fire simultaneously, using kinetic energy to slow the Destroyer armor's advance.
Meanwhile, three F-22 fighter jets took off from the air force base, fully loaded with GBU-32 precision-guided bombs, and swooped towards the desert. The kinetic energy dissipation tactic was very effective; although it couldn't inflict significant damage on the Destroyer armor, it did effectively halt its advance.
Nick Fury couldn't be happy at all, because merely halting the Destroyer armor's movement wasn't enough to satisfy him. Before the F-22s were even in position, the Destroyer armor's visor opened, and the drone detected a rapid increase in its heat. Before command and Nick Fury could give any orders, a beam of light precisely struck the tank. The beam, like a butter-cutting knife, easily tore through the M1A2's composite armor plate, and the intense heat triggered a secondary explosion of ammunition. The deafening roar even made everyone in command stop in their tracks.
"Attack! Attack!" the officer shouted over the radio. "Don't let it get any closer! All units, attack!"
Cursing under his breath, Luca jerked the steering wheel. He'd noticed the dust kicked up the moment the first shell was fired, and when he got closer, the sonic boom from the violent explosion nearly knocked him unconscious. Now he understood the danger of this operation, and also how valuable this news story was. A surge of reckless rage rushed to his head again. He cursed a few more times, gritted his teeth, and swerved back towards their objective.
The effects of the concentrated firepower quickly became apparent; the successive explosions rendered the Destroyer armor almost immobile, let alone able to retaliate. By the time the F-22s arrived, a total of 12 GBU-32 precision-guided bombs had struck the Destroyer armor simultaneously. The violent explosions even whipped up a gale in the desert, and rubble and dust stormed into the command post, covering everyone with a layer of sand.
"Wow! That's really something!" Volstagg exclaimed, patting an officer on the shoulder. "Midgard does have some good stuff! Can I have one of these?"
In the ensuing smoke and dust, all the tanks ceased fire, and everyone (except Salomon) waited anxiously for the images to be transmitted from the drone. When the smoke cleared, the drone once again captured images of the Destroyer armor—it emerged unscathed.
Seemingly enraged by the attack, Loki activated the Destroyer armor's visor once more, and high-energy lasers precisely struck the returning F-22 fighter jets. Even after all three aircraft crashed, the Destroyer armor's attacks didn't cease; instead, like a sharp blade, it relentlessly sliced through anything that attempted to attack it.
"Shit! This is all shit!" the officer roared, slamming his fist on the table. "Attack! Use everything you can!"
"What are you planning to do?" Salomon looked at Nick Fury with a bored expression. The guy in front of him was staring intently at the computer screen. "Does the World Security Council expect you to continue experimenting? Don't tell me you're planning to use nuclear weapons!"
"Of course I wouldn't do that," Nick Fury said. "The experiment must continue, but I have some backup plans."
"Missed me? Nick Fury." A voice suddenly rang out from the Quinjet's speakers, and the cockpit door opened automatically, with a golden and red suit of armor leaping into the cabin with a bang.
"This is my backup plan," Nick Fury said, standing up with a smug look on his face. "I'm always prepared."
"Heh." Salomon sneered, completely ignoring Tony Stark's performance. He took out his phone again, ready to send Luca a text message—he didn't want his tool to die without explanation; he needed to direct Luca to a safe place.
"Hey! You little brat, can't you see Iron Man is here?"
