Chapter 1105, Chapter 1101: The Land of Milk and Honey (First Update)
The wounded had been sedated, temporarily relieved of their pain, and drifted off to sleep. Aside from the roar of the jet engines outside the reinforced glass, the only sound inside the Quinjet was the breathing of the crew. Radio communications crackled with requests for communication from the German Air Force and civilian air traffic control, but these sounds ceased after the stealth underwater system was activated. Since leaving German airspace, silence had enveloped the cramped cabin. The Quinjet had found a direct route from civilian airliners to what was then Romania, now the province of Latvinia.
Although autopilot was set, Natasha Romanov was reluctant to get out of the single-pilot seat because the back of the cockpit was covered in blood and bandages, and the Quinjet's emergency medical kits were not enough to help everyone.
Fortunately, those who prepared the Quinjet seemed to have anticipated this situation. In addition to the standard S.H.I.E.L.D. field emergency medical kit, the aircraft also carried artificial skin cryotherapy spray for covering open wounds. This spray not only disinfected the wounds but also formed a fragile protective film over them. Combined with a large amount of painkillers and small, spider-shaped disposable surgical instruments to help dispose of bone fragments and suture blood vessels and muscles, the injured person was temporarily out of danger.
"Their condition has stabilized," Steve Rogers said in a low voice as he approached. "I was very worried about Colonel Rhodes."
“He’s a lieutenant colonel now,” Natasha Romanoff reminded him. “And he doesn’t need our help. The life support system in that suit provides far more effective treatment than an emergency medical kit. The Wakandas are still following us; they’re coming with us to Latvinia. They’re cooperating with our old friends, though I don’t know when they started. I don’t understand his thinking, Steve. His goal certainly isn’t as simple as stopping the Hulk or capturing Ross.”
“Do you know anything about Ross?” Steve Rogers asked. They had overlooked the burning convoy from their Quinjet, the clash between the black-armored giant and the red beast starkly clear. According to intelligence Falcon had gathered from the chain of command, the red beast appeared to be Secretary of State Ross. “How many more secrets are they keeping from us?” he asked. “I’m starting to doubt whether my past actions were right.”
“You’ve asked the wrong person, Steve.” Natasha Romanoff’s eyes were tightly shut, her temples throbbing. “If we can put all this nasty stuff aside for now, we need to talk to an old friend about political asylum. You’re a symbol of the American spirit to many, and not many people know you’ve defected. I believe the White House has already started its public relations process, and during prime time and midnight political shows, you’ll go from a celebrated hero, a symbol of justice, to a despicable defector, an evil biological weapon created since World War II to destroy America. Your past achievements will become a disgrace, you’ll go from a hero to the ultimate villain repeatedly defeated in Hollywood movies and games. They’re so afraid of you because your traitor represents God and lied to America. Then the White House will claim it was deceived, and all the news anchors will repeat what the White House said over and over until the lie becomes reality.”
Steve Rogers fell silent; he had never seen Natasha Romanoff so agitated.
"I'm sorry." She let out a long sigh. "I'm just a little confused about our future. You'll have to try all the tactics the US has used on politicians in other countries, like media smears, CIA assassinations, and political pressure from the White House. You need to make sure our friends are willing to take on more economic sanctions for you, and the value you demonstrate must far exceed the price they have to pay."
“You don’t know the details, Xiao Na. I believe he’s ready. I’ve been involved in his cause for longer than you think, and as I told him, we’re ultimately fighting for justice, not the tyranny of a few.” Steve Rogers laughed. “I believe we won’t be shot down by anti-aircraft missiles when we enter Latvian airspace. I still have a use for him.”
After more than three hours of flight, the Quinjet, having changed course multiple times to conceal its tracks, finally entered what was essentially a safe airspace. The process of sending the air defense identification code was quite rapid, but it was a heavy burden on the Quinjet's computer. Two fighter jets, unlike any other seen before, rapidly approached from high altitude, then slowed down and escorted the Quinjet onto a new flight path.
"The most difficult part of enforcing the law is reminding people of the basis for enforcing the law."
Perhaps due to the air defense identification code, the radio inside the Quinjet automatically started playing Latvian broadcasts as soon as it entered Latvian airspace, as if some program had been implanted into the Quinjet's computer. Bucky Barnes was filled with curiosity about this place, which had recently been Romania; he had been hiding and being hunted there not long ago, and now it had a different name, and even a different government. He recognized the radio host's voice; it was one of the few private programs he could listen to for free while hiding in his rented room.
"We can talk about Tirana, that former city of sin. Before the Emperor arrived, there were hundreds of thousands of guns and tens of millions of rounds of ammunition in the hands of civilians in Tirana. Albanians even celebrated shootings. Can you imagine how many shootings happened in Tirana every day before the new laws were implemented, how many armed gangs were entrenched there? In the countryside of the Albanian provinces outside Tirana, how many people died every day? How many children were thrown onto smuggling ships bound for Western Europe and America? The Emperor's order to the Albanian provinces was an armed purge, which sounds terrifying, but I can tell you that when the military and police's legislators' armored vehicles first entered Tirana, they were attacked by RPGs because those Albanian gangs didn't want the Emperor to take away their guns, their tools of violence."
The host's voice became excited, even startling Bucky, who was listening to the broadcast.
"Can you imagine what the Emperor's orders have given us, my friends? From Tirana to the most remote villages, the Emperor's superhuman army destroyed fortifications, captured spies and criminals, overturned mountains and destroyed rivers, sweeping away with an iron will all obstacles that kept us away from a peaceful and prosperous life. Thousands of bandits were slaughtered, corrupt officials knelt before armored vehicles begging for the Emperor's mercy, and foreign tycoons who had sucked our blood and wealth kissed soldiers' boots, pleading that they take their guns away from their heads! They paid the price for their past deeds, and all evil was judged under the guns of the Emperor and his army..."
The official language of Latvia is now Latin, and Romanian, as a language evolved from Vulgar Latin, is also recognized. However, not many people can understand the Romanian spoken by the presenter; only Natasha Romanov can speak fluent Vulgar Latin with an accent.
"What's that on the radio?" Falcon Sam Wilson asked curiously, as he couldn't understand the local language.
"Probably to glorify the rulers," Bucky Barnes said, blinking with interest. "I have a feeling this place is going to change a lot."
Bucky Barnes's judgment was correct. When the Latvian military control tower ordered the Quinjet to descend, the few conscious crew members saw the scenery outside the windows. Latvian was now a hub of infrastructure construction, with massive factories rising from the ground and eco-cities built around them progressing steadily. Everywhere was bustling with activity. After another hour's flight, the Quinjet finally reached the heart of Latvian territory. Natasha Romanov piloted the Quinjet to a specially constructed helipad for large aircraft, while the Wakanda aircraft, escorted by gunboats, moved to another helipad.
The elevator roared to life, and the massive helipad slowly sank into the ground. The team escaping Germany stood on the helipad, feeling the hot air blowing up from below. The dark shaft was filled with lights like a starry sky. After a while, the elevator platform slowly came to a stop. A young blonde woman, dressed simply and with her hair tightly tied up, stood holding documents, waiting for them before the steel bridge leading to the main building. Medical personnel in protective suits passed by them, boarded the plane, and carried the wounded onto stretchers.
"I am Diana Lister, Secretary of the State Council and Head of the Executive Department. My Ladyship has sent me to greet you all," the blonde woman said expressionlessly. She waved her hand dismissively, indicating her polite manners and impatience with the group. "Please follow me, ladies and gentlemen. You will be comfortably received in the reception room, and the wounded will receive proper medical care."
