Chapter 1117 American Behavior
Chapter 1117 American Behavior (First Update)
Tatiana was about to draw her monomolecular chainsaw sword to interrogate the target for changing clothes while in a confined space.
The next second, her brain ignored the illogical situation, and she released her grip on the hilt of her chainsaw sword. Only when she found herself at the monastery gates, holding a top-tier dessert voucher, did she slowly begin to recall what had happened—she only remembered dropping Natasha Romanov off at her lodgings, and then rushing to the monastery to keep her appointment with her companion. As for the dessert voucher, she thought she had simply taken it from the sorority office. After a slight hesitation regarding her somewhat hazy memories, Tatiana slipped the voucher into the leather pouch on her power armor waistband, quickly passed the guards' check, and hurried towards the monastery's private dining room.
Meanwhile, thanks to the memory-altering spell cast by the Emperor of Latvinia, Natasha Romanov followed in his footsteps, leaving Latvinia without hindrance and returning to the Immortal City through a portal. This was where it all began; she remembered this place vividly, though she had been there many times, she had only visited a handful of its secret locations. In the highest-secret library, accessible only to the monarch and the Praetorian Guard, the Emperor of Latvinia retrieved the Brotherhood of the Shield's files on Howard Stark from dozens of meters high bookshelves.
The escalator, specially designed for the Imperial Guard's access to books, was wide and sturdy. Natasha Romanoff could sit on it and carefully read the old files—she had now changed out of the torn, form-fitting evening gown from her pleasure and into her usual tight leather suit—but the heat was quickly cooled by the library's cold air. Her sweaty body, exhausted from pleasure, trembled in the dry air, and the hidden knowledge contained in the old files sent chills down her spine. She read that Howard Stark wanted to establish his own cult, and thus, together with Peggy Carter and Colonel Philip, who knew nothing about the Brotherhood of the Shield, they founded the Strategic Defense, Attack and Logistics Agency, which would later become S.H.I.E.L.D.
"This is a secret Nick Fury didn't know either. He thought this was some kind of sorcerer's secret base. He thought S.H.I.E.L.D. was the first organization in the world to make contact with aliens, but in fact, the Brotherhood of the Shield had already communicated with alien civilizations." Emperor Latvinia also sat on the escalator steps, scoffing at the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s ignorance and arrogance. "If you want to know why this organization was destroyed, you can read the 4552 volumes of files in the Epsilon-S-05 series, and then you will get a relatively accurate explanation. That's why I tamed Hydra and made them work for me. In the face of absolute catastrophe, both S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra must fight to protect humanity. I will give the conservative Hydra whatever they want, as long as they don't cross the line and they can give me what I want, I will allow them to exist."
"Malik, Gideon Malik... the former U.S. representative to the World Security Council? The guy who used nuclear weapons to bomb New York!" Natasha Romanoff could guess the gist of it just from that surname, and the answer startled her so much that she clenched her fingers, crumpling the file with the electronic ink mark. She had thought that what S.H.I.E.L.D. and the U.S. government had uncovered was all of Hydra, but she hadn't expected to see more Hydra here. The characters that had been unearthed and the targets found by Coulson's team were just pawns discarded by the radical Hydra in response to the investigation.
Emperor Latvian admitted that during the worldwide manhunt, he used his influence to help some conservative Hydra members through difficult times, and even took the opportunity to completely seize some Hydra assets. "Conservative Hydra differs from radical Hydra. The latter's ideology is entirely based on the shallow theories of the Third Reich, while the former possesses an ancient religious faith that has spanned human history. I have destroyed the gods and beliefs of conservative Hydra; all that's needed is for the older generation of conservative Hydra to die, and the true Hydra will be defunct. I need you to ensure this process goes smoothly. Although Stephanie Malick has worked diligently under my instructions, resistance still exists because money has largely replaced the ancient faith as the second faith of conservative Hydra."
The Latvian emperor's tone was sarcastic.
From the Roman Catholic Church to Hydra, loyalty to religious faith can never rival loyalty to capitalist money. This humor made him smile involuntarily. Choosing spiritual solace when material wealth is unattainable is understandable, but those who should be priests worship a new deity—money—due to immense material abundance. Based on the nature of extradimensional beings, he speculated that there might be a god of dollars and a god of gold in the outer dimensions, and before that, perhaps a god of seashells and a god of copper coins. These weak, secondary extradimensional entities often belong to no divine power and are likely to be devoured quickly by the terrifying creatures roaming the sea of souls.
Natasha Romanov looked at him with a puzzled expression, unable to understand why something so serious was funny. If Constantine were here, the guards would tell her it was because ordinary people couldn't comprehend the monarch's sense of humor, and that to understand the monarch's thoughts, one would first have to read the entire philosophical works of the Bodleian Library.
"I destroyed their old beliefs and gave them new ones, but this bondage is not very strong, so your existence will not be known to others. You are an absolute secret and my backup plan against the conservative Hydra."
"You so distrust Hydra, who have pledged allegiance to you, and have me oversee them, does that mean you'll also arrange for someone else to oversee me?" Natasha Romanov asked the fatal question. She didn't wait for the Emperor's answer, but instead gave her own. "You don't trust anyone, do you? When I first met you, you couldn't even handle a gun, and now you control the underworld and the deep government, even personally committing murder. I'm not foolish enough to believe you rose to power so quickly through peace; the details of your rise are enough to terrify anyone."
"I'm glad you recognize the caution I must exercise because of this responsibility." The emperor raised an eyebrow, snatched the file from her hand, and handed it to a small drone that was hovering in the air using anti-gravity thrusters. "I promise I won't damage your clothes this time. How about another one?"
That evening, Constantine found the emperor on the balcony of his office in the royal city.
"T'Challa has taken Heinrich Zemo, and Steve Rogers' team has been teleported back to Latvinia." The Royal Guard leaned on his halberd, gazing at the blood-red sunset gradually disappearing into the mountains. The massive war machines patrolled the city like titans from mythology; to ordinary eyes, their colors were obscured by the blinding sunlight, but Constantine could still clearly see the colors on their paint schemes. "Should Heinrich Zemo be silenced forever, my lord? I believe he allowed himself to be taken by T'Challa to blackmail us, demanding better medical care for his wife."
"I can understand his actions; he doesn't trust us." Emperor Latvinia, holding a beach cocktail with a straw, asked, "When will T'Challa's coronation ceremony take place?"
"Two days from now," Constantine said, "two days from now, T'Challa will take the heart-shaped herb juice and officially become the Black Panther."
"Eric Killmonger must act." The Emperor turned his gaze from the distance back to the Royal Guard. "Order the Assassins to monitor his actions and check the logistical arrangements of the contingency plan. Recall the Infernal Knights who have been dispatched to various regions to suppress bandits and rebel forces, distribute new weapons, and prepare for large-scale airdrops and orbital air strikes. Regardless of who holds the throne of Wakanda, we must ensure that we are the biggest beneficiaries, and Wakanda's industrial capacity must serve us fully."
