Chapter 1230 Stagnation and Self-Improvement
Chapter 1230 Stagnation and Self-Improvement (First Update)
Undeniably, Supilulimas's arrogant attitude displeased many of the Paititi indigenous people. However, the facts were clear: Onuratu and his supporters were powerless against the siege of the Kukulkan religious order, let alone against this god-like warrior before them.
The so-called resistance army described by Onuratu was actually just a guerrilla force that occasionally ambushed Trinity research outposts, military supply depots, ammunition depots, and fuel depots. Due to the disparity in firepower, they were not always successful; the gap between automatic rifles and bows and arrows only came into play during ambushes. Once Trinity's mercenaries discovered them and launched a counterattack, the resistance army suffered heavy casualties. Therefore, Onuratu and his tribal warriors had to attack cautiously and then hastily retreat each time, thus avoiding inflicting any truly irreparable damage on Trinity and the Church of San Juan.
Camilla, an officer with experience in guerrilla warfare in the Peruvian jungle, couldn't understand Onuratu and the tribal warriors' tactics at all. The Kukulkan Order's usurpation of power had occurred several years prior, and Camilla couldn't comprehend why, even after so many years, while residents of nearby towns were selling the weapons hired by Trinity for supplies, Onuratu and the tribal warriors still hadn't learned how to use firearms.
With such stagnation and ignorance, it's no wonder that the Kukulkan Order usurped power.
"Fifty warriors?" Supiluliumas realized he had initially overestimated Onuratu's organizational and military capabilities. He had assumed the tribal warriors following Onuratu possessed strong religious faith and a sense of mission, and that Onuratu would make good use of them; however, the situation was worse than expected. He shared Camilla's doubts, but he didn't offer a superficial explanation: "The Holy Trinity employs hundreds of mercenaries; why haven't they killed you all yet?"
"Because Amaru wanted to persuade me; he wanted to persuade me to hand over Kukulkan's secret."
Supiluliumas nodded. This explanation aligned with the conjecture: it was a limited competition, a period of appeasement while hope remained, until the Holy Trinity demanded more.
Onuratu glanced at the eager Laura Crawford. The archaeologist's thirst for knowledge was palpable, making Onuratu uneasy, especially when she asked about the "Eye of the Serpent" and the "Silver Box," which only fueled her suspicions. These thoughts only subsided after the Royal Guard demonstrated their overwhelming power; after all, possessing such a powerful war machine meant they didn't need to sell a single Silver Box for profit. However, she believed these people demanded more, something Paititi couldn't satisfy.
"I don't know if I can trust you, and I don't like declarations of conquest, but I will cooperate with you to solve problems, because this is Paititi's, my mission."
"Very well, then let the soldiers unload the weapons from the gunboat." Supiluliumas wasn't sure whether he should praise Onuratu for making a rational decision, but Onuratu's next question almost made him burst out laughing.
“I’ve seen the weapons the Order’s soldiers use. Muskets, more powerful, faster—those weapons pose no threat to you; they’re as weak and ineffective as falling leaves.” Onuratu looked at the laser carbine in her hand. Its modular design was clean and simple, with no unnecessary parts to understand. When she aimed and pulled the trigger as instructed by Supiluliumas, a ruby-red beam of light immediately shot from the muzzle, burning a small, black crater into the hall’s stone wall. “And this? Could this weapon, which shoots light, threaten you?” She then pointed to the Guards’ spears. “What about this weapon?”
"I am the immortal guardian created by our Lord using the most mysterious genetic alchemy in the universe. He used the world's most advanced mechanical technology and the strongest metals to create armor and weapons, hoping that we could achieve our ideals. But I believe that quantity can solve many problems. As our Lord said, machinery possesses power. This weapon is ruthless and efficient. Almost all conventional bulletproof equipment for individual soldiers in the world today cannot withstand this laser."
Supiluliumas smiled, though he tried to hide his true intentions from Onuratu. "I will train the tribal warriors. After sunset, they will learn how to use this weapon and how to coordinate their actions. As for this weapon... it is generally used against heavily armored targets. If ordinary people use it, the recoil will tear their arms off their bodies. I'm sure you don't want to lose a warrior with every shot you fire."
"Thank you for your honesty. I can hardly imagine what kind of person could make you so...powerful," Onuratu said sincerely. "I rarely see this kind of trust. Entrusting a deadly weapon to a stranger is tantamount to handing your back to the enemy. What kind of crisis and authority could make you willingly take such a risk?"
"It's just a mission." Supiluliumas laughed again. "You'll see him soon, and it will be the greatest and most honorable moment of your life." He looked at the boy, Onuratu's son. "You too, if you're lucky enough, perhaps you can join us."
“Tell me about your master, if he is the one I believe to be,” Laura Crawford said. Flying over the mountain streams in the anti-gravity hovercraft felt quite nice; the only downside was the lack of a canopy to shield her from the wind, forcing her to communicate with Amon through an earpiece, just like in a helicopter. “I’ve never seen you before. You say you’re an artificial being, but I’ve never seen him possess this technology.”
“You know too little, Ms. Crawford. Our Lord believes some things are not fit for others to know, and therefore keeps them secret. Your father… was too idealistic. I believe you understand this after what happened in the Lost City. Sometimes the public doesn't want to know the ugly truth. Mortal minds are too fragile; many cannot control their desires and thus commit crimes against social morality.” Amon noticed Laura Crawford's discomfort; the strong wind made it almost impossible for her to open her eyes, so Amon slowed down slightly so that Laura Crawford wouldn't swallow a mouthful of air while speaking. “But you are special. Our Lord told me that your destiny is destined to be linked to these supernatural phenomena and relics, therefore you must know some secrets to arm your mind and brain.”
"What does this mean? Do you know magic too?"
"No, I won't," Amon replied sternly. "I suggest you prepare now. I will go with you to the Eye of the Serpent. Our goal is to eradicate witchcraft, not to promote it. I will be responsible for dealing with any supernatural forces you encounter."
"Can you do it? I don't think this thing can get into the underground tunnel."
"Perhaps I'm not a tactician or a master of large-scale warfare like Constantine or Hannibal, but on this planet, few creatures would be capable of resisting a member of the Royal Guard." Amon poked his head out from the cockpit, searching for the ancient statue described by Onuratu. The Spear of the Guard was securely locked to the buckle beside the cockpit, ready for Amon to wield at any moment, while Laura Crawford could unleash a barrage of fire with her onboard explosives to deal with any Trinity attack helicopters that might appear. Luck was on their side, or perhaps the Trinity mercenaries were just lucky, because the hovercraft's onboard radar failed to detect the helicopter that had destroyed the armored vehicle.
"The only problem is how I'm going to get into the underground tunnels. Luckily, I thought of that and prepared weapons for it." Amon turned to Laura Crawford and said, "I suggest you wear that gas mask. Lava always releases toxic gases, and prolonged exposure can be fatal for a mortal like you."
