Chapter 1257 Suppression Operation
Chapter 1257 Suppression Operation (First Update)
Several gunboats hovered low in the sky like carrion birds, casting patches of shadow. Large-caliber heavy explosives rained down on the rainforest below, felling hundreds of years-old trees and mutated amphibians hiding in the shade and beneath the water.
Aparishia raised her fist, and the knights behind her immediately stopped and pointed their guns forward. They moved with the lightness of hunters in the shadows, the sound of their power armor joint servos minimized to almost nothing that could arouse alarm. Like an explosive device being ignited, the battle erupted in the blink of an eye. The knights pulled the triggers, and a dense hail of bullets pierced through the trees, striking the shadows rushing through the jungle. The brief flashes of exploding mass explosives illuminated colorful scales and flesh shattering under the immense kinetic energy.
"Free combat, hold the line." Aparisha wasn't wearing a helmet, but his orders still reached every knight through the built-in communication device on his neck armor. Gunfire erupted along the several-kilometer-long battle line, accompanied by the hum of the chainsaw sword's engine and screams choked in throats. After just two minutes, the gunfire gradually subsided, and apart from the lingering smell of burning propellant and the stench of cold-blooded blood, the rainforest returned to silence. "Continue the advance." Aparisha lowered his explosive pistol, hanging it on his thigh's magnetic holster. "Flight formation Zeta, advance towards Operation Quadrant Alpha-4."
"Vulture received."
The company's gunboats swooped down again, providing fire coverage to the airspace near Alpha-4 in the operational quadrant of the blockade zone. The Eagle assault boats, relying on their powerful main guns, cleared a clearing filled with tree debris in the dense forest. Immediately afterwards, a precise fire strike from the rear landed near this clearing, forcing all creatures lurking in this operational quadrant to turn back. Aparisha and his company, divided into several squads, advanced step by step from the rear, advancing the front lines to eliminate the corrupted creatures. The heavy weapons teams, composed of tactical support squads, crossed the forest clearing to carry out their mission, using heavy explosives and meltdown flamethrowers to further divide and refine the operational quadrant. Many forward tactical squads faced increasing pressure, and armored units gradually entered the fray, sealing off the operational quadrant with even tighter and more powerful firepower.
"Are you alright, Brother Aparishia?" Although all the knights wore cold expressions, their dull faces making it almost impossible for them to show any joy or sorrow, the new adjutant still noticed the company commander's unusual behavior. "The medical department said you did not receive the prescribed duration of treatment."
"I'm fine." Aparisha nodded somewhat coldly. "Thank you, Salazar brother."
Lieutenant Salazar didn't stop there. "If you're worried about the Nixon brothers, I've heard from the Royal Guard that Wakanda and Mars are manufacturing combat bio-engineered bodies for the Knights. I believe that once the Nixon brothers have received their treatment, he will be able to resume his position."
“Brother Salazar, you performed this job perfectly. It’s not your fault, and I’m grateful that you put my personal honor behind me.” Aparisha shook his head. “My heart has been shrouded in darkness lately, and my thoughts are like those of a traveler wandering in a desert. But I can adapt. We were born to bear such heavy wars, weren’t we?”
Lieutenant Salazar's laughter was as chilling as an owl's in the woods, his scarred face bearing a smile that was anything but pleasant. "I'm not questioning your will, brother. No one thinks your will is weak, because we all fought, and you were the best among us. The First Company has never suffered such heavy casualties. Yesterday, we held more mourning ceremonies on the lava than ever before, but we can't rely on anyone but our Emperor to achieve victory, not even the Royal Guard," he said. "I'm not jealous of Lieutenant Nixon at all, but I can't guarantee he won't be. Holding a double-barreled molten lava gun feels much better than holding the company flag."
The veteran's humor made Aparisha smile.
“I assure you, Salazar, brother, I’ll soon have you back in your beloved molten gun.” Aparisha retrieved the execution tomahawk from the magnetic attachment of his power backpack. Although the floodwaters had long since receded, the Amazon rainforest’s saturated soil remained incredibly soft and damp. As he walked upon it, the earth emitted a soft squeal, releasing gas and murky water that reached above his boots. “Next phase of the operation, hmm?”
"You're in charge, Company Commander."
"Do we really not need to get involved, Constantine?" Hammurabi questioned bluntly. The Praetorian Guard's footsteps thundered in perfect unison along the white corridor. The mortal officers and agents working for the Praetorian Guard instinctively stepped aside, watching these towering war gods pass by. Although these men had overcome their "superhuman phobia" to some extent, they still couldn't help but feel a surge of panic in the face of giants nearly twice their own height. This was a latent memory passed down through human genetic material; ordinary humans, without genetic modifications, could not truly overcome the concept of fear. Hammurabi didn't look at the mortals. He said in a low voice, "The Praetorian Guard is nowhere to be seen in this purge, nor is the Praetorian Guard by the Emperor's side. What is our duty, Commander? We should stand by his side and die!"
“Not now.” Constantine stood with his back to Hammurabi, the burn marks from the lava still clearly visible on his cloak. This area within the Skysword Space Station was a military maintenance zone belonging only to the Royal Guard. Before the Immortal City conquered this place, it had been the Skrulls' research department and independent command center. Constantine continued striding forward, the other Royal Guards close behind. “He has other plans for us. Don’t make it sound like he’s dead. We all know he can’t die,” the Royal Guard commander said. “Aren’t you curious why the other two Royal Guards weren’t here after the armor-donning ceremony?”
"I am Constantine, the tribune of the tribune." Hammurabi turned to Amun and Hannibal beside him. "Do you intend to enlighten us?"
"He appointed a warden to be stationed permanently in the Kamar-Taj dungeons," Constantine said. "If you've spoken with Inspector Supilulius, you'll understand why he was in such a hurry to leave."
"I thought he went to see Onuratu. He has an unusual concern for that mortal." Amon shrugged. He was the one most dissatisfied with not being able to fight alongside the emperor, as his duty was to be the emperor's personal guard. Unlike Hammurabi, who held multiple positions, Amon only served as a personal guard. He would never leave the emperor's side unless absolutely necessary, but his personality had been deliberately cultivated to be calm and collected, so he would never show his dissatisfaction. "I didn't know the Royal Guard would have a natural affinity for the pre-modified genome."
"Because such a thing simply doesn't exist. I had no idea your genetic talents included a sense of humor," Constantine rolled his eyes. He stopped before a heavy alloy door; beyond this door and through two airtight doors lay the Royal Guard's hangar. After genetically verified, the alloy door slowly opened, and the Royal Guard filed in, seeing a Pegasus heavy assault transport and a Sisters of the Blood Sky Battleship waiting for them. "We will be meeting with the Warden and the Inspector," the Royal Guard commander said, "and the Sorcerer Supreme. I suggest you show him more respect; after all, the Sorcerer Supreme is the Emperor's teacher."
"What are we supposed to do?" Hannibal asked. "Is there any other order we should carry out?"
"It's the Emperor's order," said the commander of the Imperial Guard. "We are going to meet him."
