Chapter 1282 A Strange Tacit Understanding
Chapter 1282 A Strange Understanding (Second Update)
"Haven't you understood yet, Laura Crawford? There's no natural space beyond this stone door. Spectroscopic analysis reveals that the minerals composing the door aren't from Earth, and it's protected by an unexplained supernatural force. Nobody knows what will happen if we open this door," Superuliumas said solemnly. The sorcerers who came from Kamar-Taj were busy performing a prophetic ritual, trying to extract the fragments inscribed on the silver stone door. Meanwhile, technicians at the Martian foundry were conducting chemical analyses of the rock walls and the stone door, while simultaneously conducting live studies on the snake-men who had previously invaded the area. The Martian technicians and the Guardian Order's intelligence personnel believed that the snake-men present here must have ulterior motives, making it essential to extract information from their deformed mouths.
Even if all you get are some meaningless hissing sounds.
"If the risks of opening this place outweigh the price of seeking knowledge, then we will choose to bury it completely, freezing all the space here with magma until we are able to destroy this mountain in the future. We need you to find clues to prove that we can pay the bill, and we believe that you may be able to have a detailed conversation with Queen Yasok and gain some knowledge that we do not know."
"Your master can communicate with her, so why doesn't he do it himself?"
"Because he doesn't have time, madam," Supiluliumas keenly noticed Laura Crawford's dissatisfaction. He patiently continued, "His every move concerns the lives of thousands, so he must dedicate his limited time to his work. Right now, for example, he should be dealing with the crime problem caused by extremist refugees at the border."
"Really?" Laura Crawford asked, half-believing.
Regardless of the London tabloids' slander of her and her father, and their claims of Richard Crawford's almost insane archaeological fantasies, the Crawford family still held noble titles and had access to the Botanic Gardens of the House of Lords. She had never heard of a ruler so busy that he was constantly on the move, never giving himself a moment to relax and attend various receptions. But considering that this ruler was her patron, and had recently fought a monster dozens of kilometers long in the Coboy, nothing seemed surprising. If leaders of other countries knew that her patron had such abilities, they would probably refuse invitations to national meetings outright.
"I'm not sure either, and even if I did, I couldn't tell you my lord's whereabouts; that's the Royal Guard's code of conduct." Supilulius shrugged. "However, judging from the schedule, my lord is definitely handling official business right now. As for whether he's still on Earth, that's not something anyone else could know. Stand here, don't move!"
The Royal Guard suddenly pointed their spears at Queen Yasok, so fast that Laura Crawford didn't even have time to blink. She only felt a strong gust of wind, followed by the billowing of her crimson battle robes and the ozone odor emanating from the electricity coiled around the blades. The communication grille amplified Supilulius's voice to the point of almost shattering eardrums, and also startled Queen Yasok, who was attempting to attack the knights. The poor woman stood frozen in place.
The other five knights from the tactical squad originally stationed there immediately rushed over, unstoppable like a moving train. They quickly joined up with the five-man squad that had greeted Laura Crawford and Queen Yasok, and then reacted instantly. This was the security personnel assigned to Laura Crawford by First War Commander Aparishia—a standard tactical squad, fully capable of single-handedly ending a street battle in the Middle East.
"Drop your weapon!" The guards were tense. The spear in Queen Yasok's hand was no ordinary primitive weapon, but a hunting spear of unknown origin, covered in runes. Although Queen Yasok couldn't utilize the weapon's true purpose, it didn't stop the guards from remaining vigilant, fearing the spear might suddenly take effect. After all, extradimensional objects didn't follow common sense. If it weren't for respect for the Yasok race and the desire to see if the spear was connected to the stone gate, Supiluliumas wouldn't have allowed it to appear in this cave.
"Hey, don't hurt her! She's terrified!" Laura Crawford quickly stepped in front of Supiluliumas's spear. But against the dark muzzle of the gun, she was merely an insignificant obstacle. "Your monarch made a promise to her, can the honor of the Royal Guard trample on that promise?" She tried to sway the Royal Guard's resolve with what she knew of knightly vows. "Tell me, Supiluliumas, is this not important to the Royal Guard?"
"You don't understand the authority our Lord has granted us, nor do you understand the Cult of Crimson Fire." Supiluliumas abandoned all the humor he had displayed earlier, abruptly transforming into a cold-blooded killer, even his voice turning sinister. "I need to remind you, Laura Crawford. Don't be overly eager to know what lies behind the door and make wrong judgments, for the price of your misjudgment will be borne by all of us." The stalemate continued until Wanda Maximov arrived, at which point Supiluliumas slowly lowered his guard spear. "Ms. Maximov," the guard said respectfully, "I hope what has happened here hasn't disrupted your work."
“To be precise, it’s their job.” Wanda gestured to the Kamar-Taj sorcerers working under the xenon lights behind her. “I was just sitting there, lost in thought. This kind of prophetic ritual isn’t my forte. Is this my archaeology partner, Laura Crawford?” Although Wanda Maximov remained calm, Supilulius noticed beads of sweat on her forehead, and her rapid heartbeat indicated that she was not actually at peace. Wanda Maximov was merely mimicking the monarch’s past behavior.
Strangely, Queen Yasok immediately relaxed after Wanda arrived. She ignored the knights and guns surrounding her and walked towards Wanda as if no one else was there. She spoke a lot of words that no one else could understand, as if she regarded the red-haired witch in front of her as some kind of being she knew, and poured out her heart in a language that was hard to comprehend.
Laura Crawford also noticed Queen Yasok's overly familiar manner and the awkwardness of her future archaeological partner, Wanda Maximoff. However, recalling how the Yasok people had previously referred to her patron as the corn god Huhunap and viewed the Royal Guard as incarnations of golden corn, Laura Crawford relaxed and thought it was nothing to be surprised about. Humans used to call extraterrestrials from Asgard gods, so it was easy to understand how the still-primitive Yasok people viewed the world and others.
Supiluliumas nodded, signaling the tactical squad to lower their guard and return to patrol mode.
"Yes, madam, this is Laura Crawford." The witch, somewhat flustered by Queen Yasok's enthusiasm, felt a little awkward. She needed to pretend to understand Queen Yasok while simultaneously receiving information from the Royal Guard. Fortunately, Supiluliumas was concise and didn't need to convey too many instructions. "My lord hopes the work here can be expedited, ideally completed before the deadline for our cooperation with the Path of Light."
“There is no politics here,” Wanda Maximov countered. “We need time to dissect the Silver Stone Gate.”
"Politics is everywhere, ma'am. The CIA's South American branch and the SEALs have already developed a plan to infiltrate this area. Although we can eliminate all the invading enemy, we still need to withdraw before triggering a full-scale war," Supilulius said softly. "Right now, with both sides working together to cover up the sinking of the USS George H.W. Bush in the Sixth Fleet, it's not appropriate to provoke another conflict in South America."
