Chapter 1510 Chapter 1506 Lunar War
Chapter 1510, Chapter 1506: The Lunar War (Twenty-Two)
There is no intelligence to indicate what has happened in the Kimilian clan's slums.
Gronov Rutov and his team then scouted numerous rooms, some barely large enough for them to turn around, and others completely inaccessible. Without exception, they found civilian corpses with their internal organs removed. The deployed micro-drones have yet to detect any life signs from surviving humanoids; this giant mountain of garbage and mold-filled paradise of alien metal and biochemical plastics harbors no breathing humanoids.
But these are not the only strange things.
Aside from the chaos and violence stemming from the long-standing disorder and poor public order in the lower classes, they found no recent signs of violence. There were no marks of energy or live ammunition on the buildings or bodies—at least not recently—judging from the freshness of the corpses, the massacre couldn't have occurred more than two days ago—as if these people were lying on operating tables, peacefully awaiting their deaths. The killer who murdered the poor and removed their organs used no weapons, so the only plausible explanation was witchcraft; after all, a scalpel alone couldn't have killed over a thousand people here.
Following the encrypted signal left by the Imperial Guard, the squad traversed layers of shacks that could barely be called a settlement, climbing along haphazardly constructed, rickety pillars until they reached the source of the encrypted signal. It was the highest point of this mountain of garbage. The nearby slums resembled another mountain of garbage standing in the darkness—and smelled like it—and there seemed to be some survivors there, at least before that madman roared and jumped from the high shack mountain. Even if that survivor hadn't died from the fall or been impaled by the steel pillars suspended in the air, the genetically modified warriors couldn't find him among the layers of concrete, scrap metal, and bio-plastic fragments, and then get anything out of him.
The survivor had gone mad; his brain had been shredded into a pulp before he jumped.
At the highest point of this garbage mountain, the genetically modified warriors' night vision allowed them to overlook the Chimilian clan's settlement and see many things happening there. Through the electronic eyes of their power armor, they saw large groups of clan civilians carrying something towards the center of the neat and beautiful residential area in the distance. It was a magnificent building, and also the best-lit spot in the Chimilian clan's settlement. Its architectural style completely deviated from the cultural characteristics of the civilian clan; it was a strange cluster of metallic spires built with a cold steel exterior, their tips pointing straight to the void.
At least, that's what the spire looked like before it was destroyed. Now, it lies smashed into the settlement, its twisted metal splattered on the railcars used for population movement between clans. The dome is now sealed off by a massive metal curtain that might have been an airtight door or outer armor. In the poor lighting, the genetically modified warriors can vaguely make out a cluster of collapsed buildings in the residential area below the dome, some of the lower structures still burning. Aside from the giant searchlight drones floating in the air, this is one of the few sources of light in the Chimilian clan settlement; most of the area is shrouded in darkness.
The civilian power supply here is completely cut off.
That was the result of a bombing raid by void fighters. The portholes of the outer towers built by the Chimilian clan had been destroyed by countless bombs, and many massive bricks were scattered throughout the city, damaging numerous things and creatures. Judging from the current situation, the explosive decompression had already caused considerable damage to this area. Without this airtight iron curtain, everything unsecured here would have been sucked out by the explosive decompression and dumped onto the white sands of the moon. There was much misfortune here, but the genetically modified warriors remained indifferent.
“We can’t alert those mutants, though none of us know what they’re up to,” the adjutant said. “It’s certain that the destination of those clan civilians is likely our target; the intelligence indicates it’s the core political building of the Chimilian clan. The problem is, where is the Royal Guard? His golden armor makes him difficult to hide in.” He turned and scanned the surroundings. “There’s no sign of violence or witchcraft here. It’s impossible for someone to forcibly take the Royal Guard without using force.”
"Very humorous." Gronov Rutov looked up, his ruby-colored visors obscuring his emotionless black eyes. He gripped the silenced grenade launcher tightly with his retracted claws, gesturing for his team to remain alert. The black power armor blended seamlessly into the desolate hills in the distant firelight. "I'm sure he's here, waiting to give me a scare."
"So I put on an optical camouflage cloak." Derrick stepped out from above them, and several explosive pistols immediately pointed at the writhing black shadow. Only then did the power armor detectors of the genetically modified soldiers begin to alarm, and Derrick also removed the writhing camouflage cloak he had been wearing. The Royal Guard shook his head apologetically. "I'm sorry for keeping it from you all this time. I wanted to see your reaction to those tragedies first."
He pointed to the ground beneath his feet, a makeshift road composed of different rooftops. In such a layered slum, the roads were never permanent, and whether they would collapse was entirely a matter of luck. Even Gronov Rutov and his team only dared to climb along the alien metal, things that might have once been decks.
"That's bad, but that's not our mission." Gronov Rutov holstered his explosive pistol. "Do you have any leads, Guardsman?"
"The Chimilian clan wizards brought many criminals from the Genetic Council, but that's far from enough." Derrick jumped down from the roof first, and the genetically modified warriors felt the steel beams beneath their feet tremble. "The order to slaughter those humans who maintained their pure genes was issued thirty-four hours ago. Those mutant wizards seem to have encountered something we don't understand, needing the pain of intelligent beings as nourishment. The Emperor believes the ritual performed by the Chimilian clan wizards has gone out of control, but we need to find out what happened during the out-of-control ritual, and then summon the Void Bombers to raze this place to the ground."
"There is also a shield generator here," Gronov Rutov said.
“Yes, so we have to split up. I can’t guarantee that our infiltration of the ritual site into that building won’t be discovered. If the worst-case scenario occurs—that is, we’re forced to engage the enemy—the Chimilian Clan will definitely strengthen the protection level of the shield area. Fortunately, under pressure from the Gene Council, the Chimilian Clan army has already been dispatched to the assembly point, so there aren’t many large-scale military forces here in the short term. The problem is, almost all of the Chimilian Clan’s wizards are here, and the enemy we’re facing is very powerful.” Derrick first looked at Gronov Rutuff, “You assign the tasks; I won’t interfere with your command.”
"I'll send out a tactical squad." Gronov Rutov first looked at his adjutant, then at Derrick. "The amount of anesthetic drugs you bribed that commoner clan smuggler was only enough to get us here. Wait, the other squad will be here soon."
"I'm glad you had other ways to get here." Derrick wasn't surprised at all, because it was he who, through the chain of command, advised Gronov Rutov's team to take a different route, since he didn't trust the "noseless" man and using the smuggling route was too risky. Fortunately, both clan slums had now been completely abandoned. "I hope the other team arrives as soon as possible; they're still on silent, and I can't contact them."
