Chapter 1513 Chapter 1509 Lunar War
Chapter 1513, Chapter 1509: The Lunar War (Part 25)
The Chimilian clan's settlement was a dark, death-laden abyss; the giant drone searchlights were like the bio-lights on the heads of monstrous sea monsters, used to lure prey; and the bizarre spire was the maw of death, filled with sharp teeth. The nearest armored force was located three kilometers away at assembly point B. Although the airtight doors on the main road and light rail were closed, they could still discern from the faint sounds of explosions that parts of the First Combat Group's assault teams and the Second Combat Group's armored forces had already engaged the mutant army.
However, they couldn't immediately relay the information to Aparishia and Lieutenant Nelson, as this was a silent, covert operation. Any communication made in this desolate ocean until the mission was complete risked detection, and all radio frequencies were currently overwhelmed with information. Without knowing whether the enemy had detected the specific encrypted frequency, silence was the best option. After all, the armored unit was still several heavily guarded gates and numerous enemies away, making it impossible to reach them quickly.
Gronov Rutov, not Derrick, took command of the operation. The Imperial Guard wasn't arrogant enough to ignore the experience and skills of the other soldiers; he quickly found a sufficiently concealed route that would allow the squad to reach the core spire—the Chimilian clan's architectural strength was sufficient to support the weight of the genetically modified superhumans' power armor. They moved like terrifying shadows from a fairy tale, flitting through empty rooms. Another squad employed the same tactics, knowing it was a death mission, seeking nothing but victory—all the genetically modified warriors disregarded the tactical risks of penetrating enemy territory, rushing headlong to the target location while simultaneously using micro-drones to scout the surrounding terrain.
Twenty minutes was enough for the two genetically modified teams to reach either side of the bizarre spire. The Emperor's assassins had already commissioned some commoner clans' gutter rats—the "noseless" kind of lowly—to transport small amounts of ammunition and explosives to various clan settlements during the initial battle. Although the assassins might not have known at the time that special operations teams would arrive, the Emperor still ordered them to do so, and now both the Royal Guard and the genetically modified warrior teams had received a considerable amount of supplies for a single unit.
The scene before him made Gronov Rutov stop and observe. This apartment building had once belonged to a prominent member of the Chimilian clan. In Attilan, where land was incredibly valuable, the existence of such a lavishly furnished house with so many rooms indicated the former owner's high status and immense wealth. Through the ornately decorated windows, the genetically modified warriors could observe the entrance to the bizarre spire from their elevated position—before the massive steel gate, wide enough for a small war engine to pass through, mutants with the same genetic traits crowded the path. All the mutants, with their long, narrow faces and anteater-like snouts, were carrying some kind of blackish-red, viscous flesh in their hands, jostling each other to squeeze through the door. Judging from the food displayed in the apartment, its owners were likely among the first to enter the spire, and the offerings they brought were undoubtedly for the commoner lying at the feet of the Imperial Guard.
"Follow me." Gronov Rutov moved silently across the apartment floor, leading his team up the stairs to the top floor of the building. On the rooftop, Gronov Rutov explained his plan. "We can't get into the spire undetected." He glanced at Derrick, who was shrouded in optical camouflage, "We need a raid to cover the real covert operation. Makati's team needs to operate stealthily; without breaching the shield, nothing we do matters. Do you agree?"
Both Derrick and the Type 19 gene modification expressed their approval with gestures.
"Use anti-tank missiles and jetpacks. We need to get through the gate as fast as we can. Brothers, we don't know what's waiting for us behind the gate, or the internal structure of that spire. Fortunately, the line of mutants has given us directions. We must reach their final destination as quickly as possible," Gronov Rutov said in a deep voice. "It's a gamble, but we have no other choice."
Agreed. Everyone gave the same response.
"So now, the Makati team needs some very clear signals of action."
After Gronov Rutov gave the signal, one of the squad's heavy weapons operators immediately shouldered a magazine-sized man-portable missile attached to his powered backpack and, without hesitation, pulled the trigger towards the crowd of mutants thronging the spire's gate. A brief but incredibly loud explosion engulfed the entire settlement; the thermobaric warhead detonated amidst the mutants, sending a massive fireball soaring into the air, and a massive plume of hot smoke engulfed the strange spire's gate and the mutants.
Even if thermal vision couldn't reveal what happened within the blast radius, the genetically modified soldiers, with their extensive combat experience, could still imagine the scene. The vacuum kill zone, extending over fifty square kilometers, would incinerate all organic matter, crush all living things under the overpressure, and even the mutants who had already entered the gate would be sucked out by the overpressure and thrown into the high temperature and vacuum to be incinerated. Before even checking the results, Gronov Rutov immediately ordered his squad to activate their jetpacks and leap from the rooftop, heading straight into the still-hot air. They landed amidst burning ashes at the point of impact—the moment they landed, they felt the effects of the thermobaric weapons beneath their steel boots—layers upon layers of dried limbs formed a thick, soft ground. All bodily fluids had evaporated, and all bones had been crushed. In the vacuum-heated kill zone centered on the point of impact, with a diameter exceeding fifty meters, all flesh and blood had been burned into either dried black ash or a sticky, foul-smelling gray slime. Countless mutant corpses, unrecognizable, were piled up and compressed, like a small mountain of charred, broken bones.
Within a hundred-meter radius, countless mutants were crushed, their internal organs shattered, and bones broken, dying silently before they could even utter a scream. Strangely, those mutants behind seemed unaffected, continuing to push forward, carrying offerings and trampling over the corpses of their own kind, seemingly oblivious to the bloody massacre that had just occurred. Only then did a golden giant descend freely from dozens of meters in the air, crashing into the mutant survivors. Derrick first removed his optical camouflage cloak; he didn't even have time to see how many Chimerian Clan mutants he had crushed before brandishing the garrison spear bestowed upon him by the Emperor. In a flash of lightning, several mutant corpses were cleaved in two, while the survivors continued to surge forward, like a white and black tide.
Gronov Rutov's squad has also begun its killing spree.
Time was of the essence in their mission, and they weren't sure if the mastermind behind this bizarre phenomenon had already noticed their arrival. Sharp claws and whistling chainsaws swept across charred corpses, carving a bloody path through the Chimilian clan mutants already inside the spire. Derrick arrived shortly after, throwing several plasma grenades behind him before turning and charging headlong down the path Gronov Rutov's team had carved out seconds earlier. A star-like brilliance shimmered behind him, and the hearts of the Royal Guard burned like exploding stars. This golden-armored demigod swept through the mutants who hadn't been killed by Gronov Rutov's team with unstoppable force.
