Chapter 1521 The Lunar War

Chapter 1521 The Lunar War (Thirty-Three)

The blinding flames illuminated the artificial night sky. The heavy weapons operator coldly watched below, gripping the trigger of his heavy-explosive machine gun. His aim was precise; aided by information from frontline spies, pre-recorded data helped the battlefield identification system accurately pinpoint the target's location—he knew this heavy-explosive machine gun inside and out, familiar with its rate of fire and accuracy, as well as the trigger pressure and recoil. The observation and stabilization aids mounted on the heavy-explosive machine gun were already activated, and his power armor locked his movements to prevent swaying from recoil after firing—explosive shells rained down. A few seconds later, he released the trigger and retreated back into the shadows, leaving only a fragmentation grenade with its fuse pulled for the mutants gathered in the plaza at the base of the tower.

With a deafening roar and a barely audible sigh, shrapnel and steel balls from an airburst grenade sliced through the bodies of several mutants, and blood and violence once again erupted across the plaza. The fragile order was on the verge of collapse again. All the unarmed mutants tried to flee, and no amount of persuasion or violent resistance from Black Bolt's clan forces could stop the large groups of Chimeraian civilians from their panicked escape. Screams and cries of agony spread like the wings of carrion birds as they pounced on the crowd.

The Chimerian warrior waved and shouted, but was pushed away from his original position by the surging crowd. He raised his long face, a mix of horse and anteater, characteristic of the Chimerian clan, and glared angrily at the rose window pierced by the intense heat, but he couldn't find the gunman anywhere. When the panicked crowd subsided slightly, he finally managed to squeeze back to where Black Bolt had stood, but the sight before him nearly drove him to despair. He saw the Centaurus clan's mechanics and the Ghost clan's gunmen surrounding Black Bolt, driving away any Chimerian civilians who tried to approach him.

"He's fine, just a little dizzy," the Centaur clan's electromechanical expert waved his hand. "Haven't spoken in a while." The Ghost clan gunslinger gripped a high-explosive warhead and tossed it to a Chimerian warrior. The warhead bore obvious impact marks, but it hadn't detonated. The gunslinger explained that the Inhumans of Attilan had never produced this type of ammunition, and they couldn't yet figure out the technology behind the warhead. Disassembling the ammunition without understanding the fuse would be dangerous; it was already a miracle that Black Bolt's voice hadn't detonated.

"Your Majesty! We must pursue the invaders immediately!" The Chimerian warrior, gripping the warhead of a bomb, shouted to Black Bolt. Black Bolt gestured, but the Chimerian warrior refused, even as Black Bolt clutched his throat, his eyes fixed on him. "I am a warrior, not a civilian. I will not remain here to maintain order; others will do that. I must kill the invaders." Black Bolt gestured again, and the others agreed. "I will secure the evacuation route, and I will open the armory to arm the civilians," the Chimerian warrior said reluctantly. "I swear."

Black Bolt nodded, turned, and led the allied forces into the spire, leaving the Chimilian clan behind for the time being. After walking several dozen meters into the tower, the sight before them and the overwhelming stench of blood nearly made the entire clan's army faint. The hall floor was covered in blackened, foul-smelling blood, wet, reddish-white and blackish entrails, and pale bone fragments resembling broken, withered tree branches. It seemed that the Chimilian clan civilians who had entered the tower earlier were now scattered on the ground, in disarray, almost impossible to piece together. "It's a good thing we didn't let him in," the mechanical expert said, his amphibian-like eyes peering into the deep pit in the center of the hall. "Those inside are relatively intact; if possible, we can study their cause of death. But there are still some questions… Was that guy on the platform a wizard? Who killed that wizard?"

"Intruders," the Ghost Clan gunslinger said somberly. "Only invaders."

"We've seen the invaders' handiwork, but what's in this pit is definitely not. Look at that thing..." The electromechanical expert pointed to the deep pit, holding up a data panel, and said, "Look at this pit. Zoom in on the image. Do you see what's at the bottom? That's not soil or steel, and it's certainly not the entrails and blood of the unfortunate soul below. It's some kind of muscle with a complete structure. Your Majesty, could you please say a word downwards? Perhaps that would be helpful to our investigation."

"Bookworm." The Ghost Clan gunslinger grinned disdainfully, and the Rogue Clan warrior echoed the same disdain, though with a different expression. "We're hunting down intruders, not investigating," the gunslinger said. "Kill them first, ask questions later."

“At least we need to figure out who the enemy is. Don’t forget how those Chimilian civilians got here. We’ve seen the invaders use weapons, not some kind of telepathy.” The mechanic looked at Black Bolt meaningfully. “Perhaps one possibility is that the invaders’ goal is to completely eradicate witchcraft.” The Ghost Clan gunslinger roared angrily, accusing the mechanic of being a cold-blooded coward who could defend the invaders while watching hordes of Inhuman corpses lie in wait. “Shut up, you idiot.” The mechanic gave him a cold look. “I’m just telling you, we can’t rule out the possibility that the Chimilian clan wizards are also our enemies. Your Majesty, perhaps you should request assistance. I remember the civilian clans also have witchcraft research teams.”

Black Bolt gestured, "I won't let Crystal participate in such a mission; she's still a child."

"Attiland is facing invasion, and at this time Attiland has no children." The electromechanical expert took the lead, bypassing the deep pit. "But it's up to you, Your Majesty. Let's pursue the invaders as soon as possible. They are equally ruthless to the Inhumans and wizards."

Black Bolt pondered for a moment, then nodded, but he did not indicate that he agreed with anything.

"Interception mission phase one, mission failed. Enemy leader confirmed to possess the ability to impinge on physical munitions. Interception mission phase two, proceed. Please immediately replace energy munitions."

「GR-19-10收到,正在召回GR-19-7。GR-19-8正在前往任务地点,等离子体弹药充足。」

"GR-19-5 received. GR-19-3 may continue the mission."

"GAVD, the Inhuman target is heading to the second floor. Prepare for action and carefully monitor for mine triggering. GAVD, respond immediately, GAVD!"

Derrick didn't answer immediately, moving quietly among the towering bookshelves. Translucent tissue fluid seeped from the edges of the charred wound, and boiling blood steamed from the massive gash on his face. The heat had burned through the wizard's skull and brain, slamming him to the ground and forcing the end of his sorcery. But Derrick wasn't satisfied. He wasn't satisfied with the bio-monsters the wizard had bred, easily trampled to death by boots, impaled by guard spears, or even crushed with the spear's butt. Those monsters, once deprived of their leader, immediately became dull and stupid; he could kill them with almost no effort. His dissatisfaction stemmed from the fact that such a wizard couldn't possibly possess profound knowledge, and the presence of such a foolish wizard indicated that he was still far from achieving the emperor's goals.

"...Please respond, GAVD!"

The radio went silent again. Derrick hung up and stepped into the dusty bookshelves.
