Chapter 1547 The Lunar War
Chapter 1547 The Lunar War (Fifty-Nine)
Crystal covered her face, her eyes blurry with tears as she gazed through the observation window of the medical pod. This was the first time she had seen Medusa in her injured state. Black and blood-red floating debris clouded the pale green medical solution, but Crystal could still see through the window the charred, emaciated figure floating in the medical pod, writhing and convulsing in pain. Her once beautiful, long, blood-red hair was gone, and even after being cleaned, the swollen, charred skin and the constantly bleeding wounds were still a horrifying sight.
The Attilan royal medical system was independent of the clan, and Crystal's parents had been the heads of this system. Therefore, the doctors there were completely open with the girl who had become a princess. According to the doctors, Crystal learned that when Medusa was rushed into the medical pod, her nasal cavity had been charred and stuck together by flames and hot air. Doctors had to perform emergency surgery to reconstruct a breathing tract before they could barely place the barely alive Medusa into the pod. Intravenous infusion was impossible; no doctor could find any intact veins for IV drips in the severely burned, sloughed skin, and even her internal organs were almost completely cooked by the heat.
"It's a miracle that Mother Medusa survived," the doctor said. "Half of the Gene Council guards protecting her were vaporized, and the rest were burned to a pulp. There were no survivors except Mother Medusa. Technicians determined that Mother Medusa suffered considerable electromagnetic radiation damage, because the enemy used plasma weapons, and the brief burst of electromagnetic radiation can have quite serious aftereffects."
"my sister……"
"Mother Medusa might be able to recover." The doctor pursed his thin, moist lips, hesitated for a moment, and finally spoke the truth. "Mother Medusa's brain has suffered irreversible damage." He pointed to the instruments beside him and said, "The medical pod cannot help with traumatic brain injury, and we currently have no way to repair it except through surgery. Moreover, this is a heat injury, and surgery may not be effective. Even if it can be repaired, the damaged area of the brain will still affect future behavior and psychology after it heals. We have been monitoring Mother Medusa's brainwaves and have summoned a mind reader to try to protect Mother Medusa's soul and memories, and by protecting consciousness and soul, we can help the body recover."
“I can be a mind reader, Cousin Richard,” Crystal said, rubbing her eyes. She reached out and ruffled the head of the giant Shar-Pei beside her. “There aren’t many in the royal family with telepathic abilities stronger than mine. I can help.” She stubbornly widened her eyes, like a horse behind a racetrack fence. “I have to do it. We can’t live without her, and neither can His Majesty Black Bolt.”
"Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock."
The assassin in the black bodysuit was now behind her, throwing a bomb that flashed with plasma arcs. Medusa desperately tried to turn around. She took a step forward, turned around, and heard the terrified screams of the Gene Council guards beside her. She saw that the assassin's face was featureless. Then several bodies pounced on her back, forcibly pressing her to the ground. Her mind went blank until a burning, piercing pain shot through her back and then through her internal organs, and she fainted again from the pain.
"No, not this. Keep watching, sister, keep watching."
"Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock."
The assassin in the black bodysuit was now right behind her, throwing a bomb that flashed with plasma arcs. Medusa desperately tried to turn around. She took a step forward, turned around, and heard the terrified screams of the Gene Council guards beside her. She saw that the assassin's face had no features—no, the assassin had a face, a face she recognized—it was a man, the head of the Gene Biology Research Laboratory of the Attilan Royal Family. What else… Time seemed to stand still, everything stopped. Medusa was unaware of her own existence; she didn't even realize that the woman with ankle-length, blood-red hair was herself. She observed everything curiously, taking two steps away from her original position.
Accompanied by the violent expansion of air and heat, blinding white light engulfed everything.
"No, that's not it. Sister, I'm protecting you, so you can see further."
To be precise, it was currently featureless; she knew the face the assassin had once used. Medusa looked down at her hands—the arms of a severely burned patient—she stood naked in the circular lounge of the Gene Council hall, her feet covered in a thick, black slurry. It was her blood and tissue fluid, scorched and mixed with her burnt skin, forming a tar-like substance.
burn?
Medusa instinctively hugged her arms; she was cold. But the next moment, excruciating pain shot through her arm. She saw a large patch of charred, swollen skin stuck to her palm—the skin that should have been on her arm. Looking down, she saw her reflection in the smooth marble floor and then let out a horrifying scream.
"No... Sister, don't lose your mind..."
"Crystal?" Medusa looked up, staring directly at her. Her eyes were sunken and black, just two empty sockets with numerous blood vessels extending like withered branches in winter. "Is it you, Crystal?"
Crystal didn't answer. She stared wide-eyed at the figure behind Medusa, at the assassin.
She took a deep breath, her body trembling like a leaf.
The doctor continued muttering complex alchemical terms like consciousness, soul, and body, while the Locktooth Dog lay impatiently on the ground, groaning and wagging its tail, trying to banish the persistent noise. The doctor's chanting was broken by a scream, and the Locktooth Dog immediately sprang to its feet, leaping several meters in one bound to catch Crystal, who had fallen off the chair, with its hippo-like, massive body. However, Crystal continued to scream, flailing her arms wildly, her fingers spasming and unable to bend. The doctor quickly arrived, picked Crystal up, and placed her on another bed, simultaneously administering a small dose of sedative—a necessary procedure for mind readers before they could perform mind reading. Crystal believed her abilities allowed her to break this rule, because unlike weaker mind readers, she wasn't so easily drawn into the other person's memories and confused about her identity after the reading. However, Crystal's confidence proved futile; she was nearly driven insane by the terrifying visions of Medusa's dream.
"What did you see, crystal? What did you see?"
The buck-toothed dog barked its head away without any politeness, then stuck out its wet tongue and licked Crystal's face. The smell of dog saliva instantly covered Crystal's once clean and tidy face and carefully styled hair. It seemed that Crystal had finally come to her senses after the buck-toothed dog's antics.
"An assassin... I saw an assassin." She frowned, trying to recall the dream. She clearly remembered the appearance of the plasma grenade, the dazzling light and heat of its explosion, and the black bodysuit worn by the assassin who threw it. But she found herself unable to recall the assassin's overall appearance. "But it wasn't just an assassin; there was something... something I don't know in my sister's dream."
"What?"
"I don't know, I don't know!" Crystal suddenly screamed. The harder she tried to recall, the more blurred the memory became, like morning mist under the blazing sun. After a while, soothed by the locktooth dog, her emotions gradually calmed down, and the pain that shot from her spine to her brain disappeared without a trace. "I need to see it again, just one more time. My sister needs to see that thing, that thing in her understanding. If she can't see it, then I can't see it either, and I can't even remember it."
