Chapter 1548 The Lunar War
Chapter 1548 The Lunar War (Sixty-One)
"You should reply to His Majesty Black Bolt, Crystal."
Richard adjusted his glasses with obvious concern. Mind reading was an extremely dangerous thing, especially for those with strong minds. The charred human in the medical pod had once possessed powerful mental strength and was adept at using it. For someone as inexperienced as Crystal, Medusa's mental world was like a labyrinth with no way out. "Although other mind readers are not as capable as you, they have received professional training and can ensure their own safety and that of Mistress Medusa."
"How long will it take for your sister to recover?"
"I don't know, maybe months or even years." Richard sighed. "Rebuilding skin and muscles takes months, but brain surgery requires gene therapy and cloning. Even if brain injuries can be repaired, a mind reader is needed to regain memories, and memories can also help repair brain injuries to some extent. After all, this is a psionic technology, and pure physiology cannot achieve perfect repair."
Richard paused. "Moreover, you also need to manage other medical departments. His Majesty Black Bolt has requisitioned a lot of medical supplies from the Royal Medical Department to the front lines, so you certainly don't have the energy or attention to focus on Mother Medusa's treatment. This is very dangerous for a mind reader; it could very well cause a loss of consciousness and a personality swap. At that point, you might even start to believe that you are Mother Medusa."
"Besides me, the royal family has another powerful mind reader, and one who is even more experienced."
"You mean... please don't say such things again, Your Highness Crystal. That rebel must never leave his cage. It is His Majesty Black Bolt's order. No one will forgive Maximus for killing King Argon and Queen Linda."
"Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock."
Medusa opened her eyes, letting the light into them.
She stood in the center of the circular hall of the Gene Council's clan lounge. Soft light emanated from the white lamps surrounding the ceiling, and pure white fiber carpet covered the cool marble floor. Several high-backed chairs sat facing each other on the carpet, directly opposite a long silver table with exquisite relief carvings. She sat down in one of the chairs with perfect ease, as if it were her duty. She crossed her legs, emphasizing the beautiful muscle lines beneath the slit of her long skirt, her fingers tapping on her knees, her toes tense. "Will they find out?" she wondered anxiously. "What's going on with Maximus? What is he trying to do? Will they find out?"
She let out a long breath, trying to calm her nerves, like a prisoner awaiting sentencing.
"This is inappropriate," she thought. Yet Medusa couldn't help but recall the feeling of her lover's warm breath on her neck. Maximus, the handsome prince, the second son of King Argonne and Queen Linda. Her toes relaxed, she took a deep breath, lowered her crossed legs, and placed her hands on the armrests, striking a relaxed pose. But she knew this couldn't hide the tension deep within her. "This is inappropriate. They'll find out. They already know. What should I do?"
"Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock."
She didn't know where the annoying sound was coming from.
She looked up and scanned the hall, but couldn't find the source of the sound. However, when she focused her gaze on the center of the hall again, she was startled to see several figures suddenly appear there. These people were dressed in the uniforms of the Gene Council guards, carrying standard weapons. At first, she thought they had brought her verdict, but then she realized that the Gene Council guards were like tiny insects frozen in amber, their flamboyant movements frozen in mid-air, completely motionless. She saw the person surrounded by the Gene Council guards. That person had the same red hair as her, but their eyes and appearance seemed more mature. At the same time, an oval device in mid-air was flashing a ghostly blue light.
A woman dressed in a black bodysuit stood at the entrance of the lounge lobby, her back to her, so her face was not visible.
Before she realized that the person being protected was herself, the outer shell of the device began to crack.
The stagnant spacetime seemed to begin to move, even accelerate. Blinding plasma surged forth, and intense heat instantly engulfed the entire council hall. Medusa instinctively tried to raise her arms to protect herself, simultaneously trying to wrap her long hair around her body, but her movements were completely unable to keep up with the expanding plasma. She felt the star-like heat slowly burning away her skin, muscles, and bones; her prized, beautiful hair, capable of twisting steel, became as fragile as paper in the face of such heat.
The entire world disappeared after the miniature star exploded.
"Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock."
Medusa opened her eyes, letting the light into them.
She didn't know where the annoying sound was coming from.
Crystal couldn't help but glance at the body inside the medical pod as it suddenly moved.
“This is common; Lady Medusa’s mental state remains active.” Richard noticed the joy welling up on Crystal’s face. He had to suppress his grief and shatter her beautiful illusion with facts. The murky solution in the medical pod gradually calmed down, the body returned to stillness, and the data on the brainwave monitor returned to normal. “You can think of it as a conditioned reflex. She is unaware of what happened, so we had to administer chemical induction anesthesia to avoid putting too much strain on her mind. Your Highness Crystal, under no circumstances should you mention Maximus; that rebel will only hinder our war to defend our homeland.”
"So, if I want my sister to recover quickly, I'm the only one who can help?"
Richard shut his mouth and said no more.
He could see that Crystal desperately wanted Queen Medusa to recover as soon as possible. He understood her feelings, but things couldn't always go as a capricious girl pleased. If he continued, Crystal might run to the Gene Council and demand that Maximus participate in Queen Medusa's treatment—as a nobleman related to the royal family by blood, Richard was well aware of the rumors surrounding Black Bolt before his ascension to the throne—at that time, Black Bolt hadn't yet left the isolation chamber, and both the Gene Council and King Argon believed that Black Bolt couldn't fully control his abilities and posed a threat to everyone, even Attilan. At that time, the heir to the throne was Maximus, and Medusa, as the queen born from a political compromise, had grown up and played with Maximus. Until one day, King Argon's eldest son emerged from the isolation chamber, and King Argon re-announced the heir to the throne.
Driven by jealousy, Maximus made an irreparable mistake.
What happened after that remained a secret among the royal family. Over the next few years, Medusa seemed to have completely disappeared until Black Bolt officially ascended the throne. Richard knew he couldn't explain the entanglement between Queen Medusa and Maximus to Crystal. He was even certain that if Black Bolt knew Maximus could help Queen Medusa recover, the kind-hearted king would have done so. This was absolutely unacceptable; no one could tolerate the rebel regaining his freedom, not even for a moment.
"You should return to the Gene Council," Richard said deliberately in a serious tone. "Please don't disturb our work, Your Highness Crystal; we are all very busy." The blonde girl nodded repeatedly, her face full of apology. Seeing her expression, Richard almost couldn't resist blurting out the truth. But he held back. "Please tell His Majesty that we have the ability to heal Mother Medusa, but we need time."
