Chapter 1589 The Lunar War
Chapter 1589 The Lunar War (101)
Explosive projectiles are designed to penetrate armor, making them devastating to ordinary humans. The blasphemous creations of the Inhuman Gene Lab possess skeletal armor that grows from within the skin and attaches to the body surface. According to rapid testing conducted by senior researcher Soferon and other scholars, this deformed exoskeleton contains a large amount of metal. Even so, it still cannot stop the bloodthirsty killing of the genetically modified warriors. Often, just one explosive bullet fired from the barrel is enough to obliterate the head and chest cavity of an Alpha Primitive Man, turning it into bloody mist and finger-sized fragments.
Sergeant Wattsman raised his shield high, almost able to smell the stench emanating from the mindless, humanoid beast. Rage surged within him. He thrust his chainsaw from above the shield, orange-red sparks cascading like a waterfall, leaping over the shield and landing on Senior Researcher Soferon's spacesuit. In less than a second, the sparks were replaced by blood reeking of burnt flesh. Sergeant Wattsman skillfully sliced open the Alpha Primitive's chest cavity with the high-temperature chainsaw, his buzzing, red-hot blade shredding the viscera and spine of this blasphemy.
Sergeant Wattsman skillfully flipped his wrist, and the bloodied chainsaw sword swung in an arc.
Senior researcher Soferon, who was opening the encrypted door to the research lab, looked up and glanced at the genetically modified warrior beside him, letting out a barely perceptible sigh. He wasn't unfamiliar with battlefields, but the gore of every battle fought by these genetically modified warriors far surpassed that of light weapons engagements among humans on Earth. It was as if someone had used heavy artillery to cleanse the area, turning even the once clean and cold corridor floor into a blood-soaked wetland.
"You should be glad that our spacesuit boots have anti-slip features."
He muttered as he opened the next door, only to be grabbed by the shoulder and roughly shoved behind a heavy shield by a genetically modified soldier from the Sixth Knight Squad. Senior researcher Sofron, already accustomed to the soldiers' rudeness, followed orders after his usual grumbling. Under the soldiers' stern warning, no scholar would be foolish enough to forget to double-check the airtightness of their spacesuits, nor would they forget to bury their heads behind the soldiers' shields—Black Bolt's advanced key could open all the doors to the genetic lab, but the outdated system required time to verify it. Even with the battle imminent, and even with blood and bone fragments splattering on their spacesuits, none of the scholars from the Immortal City who came to the moon harbored any worries—mechanical experts trusted the capabilities of the powered armor they had witnessed, virologists and bacteriologists trusted the physical abilities demonstrated by the soldiers, and their understanding of the Emperor's genetic engineering and mechanical knowledge made the sense of security provided by the soldiers unparalleled.
"Back off, I know," Senior Researcher Soferon said helplessly. Fortunately, the spacesuit's communication system had noise reduction capabilities, preventing them, as ordinary humans, from being deafened by the explosive gunfire of the genetically modified warriors. However, the air vibrations from each shot made the scholars feel as if someone had punched them hard, and even the pool of blood on the ground trembled. "This time it's not the Alpha Primitive Man."
He raised an eyebrow, expressing his admiration for the Inhuman researcher's imagination.
Although also a humanoid being, this one was much smaller than the previous creatures modified from Alpha primitives. It was a humanoid with a large head and the height of an average person, and its limbs were slender due to the gravity of its different planet—Senior Researcher Soferon turned to his young assistant and said, "Prepare to collect samples. There might be relevant data on the computers in this lab; we must take all the data here, without missing anything." As soon as he finished speaking, a deafening bolt of lightning struck the genetically modified warrior's shield, forcing him to take a step back and nearly trampling the fragile scholars.
"We probably won't get any data this time," Senior Researcher Soferon added expressionlessly. Although it was just a fleeting glimpse, he and the other scholars had observed the creature's physical details through the hovering drones assigned to them. It had a large head, presumably with a thin skull, and slender yet incredibly powerful limbs, suggesting a skeletal composition similar to the Alpha Primitive Man. These creatures didn't charge forward like the previous version of the Alpha Primitive Man; instead, they stood indifferently at the back of the research institute's corridor. "The Emperor won't allow young researchers like you to be involved in psionic creature research, at least not now."
"Psionic Mutants! Shields!" The sergeant of the Sixth Knights' squad shouted angrily, even causing the noise reduction system of their spacesuits to crackle. Two genetically modified warriors, shields in hand, completely blocked the passage. They marched forward under the blinding lightning, the magnetic boots emitting a constant, ear-piercing metallic scraping noise, as if something with immense force was trying to throw them off. Brilliant sparks flew as psionic lightning collided with the plasma field, the high-temperature lightning even beginning to melt the alloy plates on the walls of the research facility's passage and scorch the electronic components inside the deflector shields. The other genetically modified warriors of the Sixth Knights opened fire on the creatures releasing psionic lightning, but both the explosives and the plasma clusters lost momentum less than ten centimeters away from these creatures. Even the plasma clusters lost their restraint at that distance, turning into a warm puddle of air and flowers.
The scholars had already moved aside, having no intention of causing any trouble.
"These creatures are under control." Senior Researcher Soferon sent a drone-taken image over Sergeant Wattsman's communications channel. "These creatures have mechanical implants in the back of their heads, and those are definitely not the crude implants used by the Alpha Primitives. These psionic beings are manipulated; they have absolutely no self-awareness. They are simply a psionic array!"
Sergeant Wattsman's response was so cold that it hardly even counted as a response.
"Get closer! Melee, pyrometallurg! Burn this blasphemer!" Sergeant Wattsman issued the order, then turned to the scholars. His gaze was as cold as any of the genetically modified warriors, but only now did the scholars truly understand how terrifying that piercing will and gaze could be. They froze, as if facing an oncoming vehicle. "Immediately check the airtight protocol and the mental interference protocol! All non-combat personnel are prohibited from approaching within twenty meters of psionic creatures! Heavy weapons handlers, bring Mars-Omega over!"
The so-called Mars-Omega is a rifle used to fire heat rays. However, due to difficulties in production and scarcity of materials, such a heat ray rifle can only be assigned to a squad of knights. Only high-ranking officers can have their own heat ray rifle. For example, Company Commander Aparisha has a heat ray incendiary pistol as a backup in addition to his plasma pistol. This rifle has a devastating effect on organic matter and an extremely powerful penetrating effect on armor. Therefore, it is often used as a tactical weapon to deal with armored targets.
A crimson heat ray pierced through the psionic lightning and struck the bizarre creature standing at the end of the passage. The heat ray was unstoppable by psionic energy and reduced a row of five psionic mutants to ashes. The rising ashes even ignited other psionic mutants, whose emaciated bodies were still burning when Sergeant Wattsman lowered his Mars-Omega rifle, which was cooling down.
