Chapter 1590 The Lunar War
Chapter 1590 The Lunar War (102)
"You are absolutely not allowed to enter this area until it is thoroughly cleared. Sixth Knight Squad, leave a tactical squad to guard them." Sergeant Wattsman pointed at the group of scholars in orange-red spacesuits amidst the pungent stench of psychic energy release and the ashes from the complete combustion of organic matter, speaking bluntly. He didn't even use the word "protect" to mask the guarding action, because he disdained to use such a crude lie to express the truth.
"Unauthorized personnel are prohibited from handling any psionic items, and the collection of organic psionic samples is forbidden. The Emperor's laws grant me the right to execute violators on the spot." Sergeant Wattsman finished speaking and immediately opened the communication channel to report the situation to the Legion Commander. The large-scale appearance of psionic mutants meant the situation was escalating, and the Fifth and Sixth Knights needed reinforcements. "Now, unauthorized personnel, step back. Researchers whose names are called, step forward. Senior Genetic Researcher Soferon, Senior Mechanical Researcher Charlotte… You have access to psionic genes and psionic machinery; you may proceed to the next step."
Psionic gene samples are extremely rare. Only Maya Hansen and a research branch called the "Sora Redlin Druid Order" have access to many psionic gene samples. Psionic machines are also rare and have a similarly high level of secrecy. Researchers, including senior gene researcher Soferon and senior mechanical researcher Charlotte, have only had access to a small number of samples, and these were teaching tools given to them by the Emperor with his permission.
Charlotte, a senior mechanical researcher, recalled the moment she was granted elevated privileges and allowed to learn advanced knowledge. A tall, black craftsman from the Silver Lion Forge in the Immortal City entrusted her with disassembling an iron box that spewed out flower petals and bubblegum. The price for the box's operation wasn't electricity, but one hundred milliliters of human blood daily. The Immortal City was built upon a foundation of modern human scientific and engineering marvels, possessing cutting-edge engineering projects such as the Z-furnace, plasma reactors, and underwater trains. Yet, the exquisitely designed iron box still shocked her, because it violated the most basic scientific principle: the conservation of mass. She swore she had precisely weighed the box using laboratory equipment; it was made of ordinary high-carbon steel. During the process, the box's mass remained completely unchanged—not even the chemical changes that would involve iron oxidation and an increase in oxygen atom mass occurred. Yet, it could still spew out those colorful flower petals.
"What's wrong?"
Senior researcher Soferon, nearing fifty, followed Sergeant Wattsman. He was completely unfazed by the near-death experience; if someone hadn't been watching, he might have jumped for joy. He wasn't sure if this was a result of the rejuvenation surgery, but Soferon felt he'd been in a constant state of excitement since arriving on the moon, working tirelessly, as if the surgery had rejuvenated his mindset. Although their first spaceflight wasn't ideal, none of the researchers, including Soferon, cared. After all, before joining the Immortal City, their greatest ambition had almost always been to reach space—an experimental arena that an entire generation of scientists, drifting further and further down the scientific path, had dreamed of.
"I do have access to psionic genes, but I don't believe my papers have given me that access," Senior Researcher Soferon said uncharacteristically modestly. "I've only conducted the most basic psionic gene chimerism experiments so far, not even to the point of human trials. I haven't even had any exposure to the creative art of your kind."
"This is not Attilan's only genetic research institute."
"You mean there's another colleague I don't know who also came to Attilan?"
Sergeant Wattsman remained as sparing with his words as ever.
The danger in this laboratory has not yet subsided. No one knows how many artificially bred psionic mutants remain inside, and the person controlling them has not yet been found. However, it is certain that they are an Inhuman with psionic powers. Although Wattsman's rank is sergeant, due to the Emperor's trust in genetically modified soldiers and their high priority in the order of battle, Sergeant Wattsman's authority far exceeds that of ordinary human officers of the same rank.
Among the classified documents he had access to, a technology known as the "Human Brain Array," developed by an alien species called Migo that had previously visited Earth, bore many similarities to the methods used to manipulate psionic mutants here. Sergeant Wattsman couldn't rule out the possibility that the Attilan Inhumans had come into contact with that terrifying alien race when they were war slaves in the past, but in any case, he couldn't directly tell these researchers about the alien technology. The matter was too highly classified; research could only be conducted with permission to avoid causing an irreparable disaster.
"Senior Mechanical Researcher Charlotte. We're taking all the data storage equipment here; you'll be in charge of that. Senior Genetic Researcher Soferon, we're taking all the samples here; you'll be in charge of that..." Sergeant Wattsman announced to the scholars after assigning the tasks, "After the Fifth Knight Squad cleans this laboratory, everything inside will be completely incinerated, leaving no trace."
"We don't have enough manpower," someone protested. "Do you expect us to move things?"
"The Rangers will provide support, and the Martian technicians will be in charge of the engineering work." Sergeant Wattsman shoved Senior Researcher Soferon back, who felt a dull ache in his shoulder blade. "You are now under the command of the Sixth Knight Squad until I announce a reduction in the danger level of this laboratory."
"Order that Martian technician to bring the intelligent legion over. We have enough ammunition to build a defensive line," the Aparisha battle group commander told the first company commander. The aetheric beings swarmed towards the bunkers constructed by the genetically modified warriors using prefabricated fortifications. Ammunition transported by the Martian technicians was unleashed by armored vehicles and main battle tanks used as firing positions. Every second, massive amounts of lasers, bombs, plasma, and flames were hurled at the profaning aetheric entities. Aparisha called this density of firepower and his battle axe "the Emperor's Wrath."
"I need you to take two squads to reinforce Sergeant Wattsman. A large number of psionic mutants have appeared in the lab."
"I saw Sergeant Wattsman's combat log." The platoon leader gripped his longsword firmly, piercing a bouncing aetheric creature. The so-called demon showed no pain or fear after being wounded; it seemed to treat it as a game, its fleshy tail wagging and emitting cheerful whimpers, like a clingy canine. The platoon leader casually withdrew his longsword, slicing the monster to pieces with a blade crackling with blue electricity and at a speed imperceptible to the naked eye. Aparisha clearly admired the platoon leader's swordsmanship, even though he himself didn't use such a weapon combining violence and finesse, opting instead for a more visceral battle axe. "I'll bring the third and fourth knight squads as reinforcements. I think Sergeant Wattsman needs a heavy weapons strike squad."
