Chapter 229 Questions from Before the New Year

Chapter 229 A Question from Ten Years Ago (First Update)

"Any periodic function can be viewed as a superposition of sine waves with different phases. The superposition of infinitely many sine waves will form a rectangular wave with a 90-degree angle. If you observe countless sine waves in a three-dimensional coordinate system, their superposition will appear as a line segment in the frequency domain image." The female PhD student was somewhat troubled by students with different philosophies. More importantly, she had more than one such student. Normally, for a PhD student who had produced research that could win the Gruber Foundation Prize in Cosmology not long after completing her postdoctoral work, Jane Foster would not lack students. However, the two students in front of her were an intern who had gone through thick and thin with her and had switched from social sciences, and a high school sorceress with the magic to cross space. Jane Foster could only suppress her frustration and do her best to explain these basic concepts, because these were precisely the knowledge they lacked when studying astrophysics.

"This is the spectrum of a Fourier series, something you absolutely must learn. Salomon Damonette, stop telling Darcy stories! There are no gods in this world; mathematics is the only god!"

"Professor Foster, I was just telling Darcy some myths that aren't in the books." Salomon gestured dramatically towards the voluptuous female college student sitting next to him. Darcy, after hearing Jane Foster's outburst, quickly pretended to be indifferent, lowering her head and fiddling with her hair. But Salomon's next words made Darcy Lewis look up in utter shock. "I've already studied Fourier transforms, and I've previewed the textbook you gave me, Professor. I was just chatting with Darcy out of boredom."

"You betrayed me!" Darcy's eyes widened, and she let out a wail. She had initially felt somewhat relieved that she couldn't understand such basic lessons, because she thought that Salomon, a high school student, probably couldn't understand them either, and it didn't matter, since there were others like her. But the sorcerer's words ruthlessly revealed the truth: the only fool in this classroom was actually her.

"I'm sorry, Darcy, but if you had a foster mother known for her wisdom, you'd also be forced to learn these things much earlier," Salomon shrugged without a hint of apology. "I think the professor has a point, but Asgardians aren't just aliens. The Aesir pantheon is also related to the Creator, which is what I was just discussing with Darcy. Furthermore, I think the professor's words contain some bias. Mathematical laws are not immutable. I've happened to encounter a true god who can alter mathematical laws. That god can make 1+1 not equal 2, and can completely collapse mathematical laws, both those already discovered and those yet to be discovered. I believe that only those who grasp some kind of fundamental cosmic logic or concept can be called gods."

“You’ve already demonstrated magic to us, but I think it’s just some kind of technology that’s currently beyond our capabilities. Bending a spoon out of thin air isn’t something technology can’t do, and guessing the ZENER card isn’t a big deal either.” Jane Foster sighed. “If the god you’re talking about really exists, then he certainly qualifies as a deity, but that has nothing to do with our lesson. Sit down, Julie Knurls (the 15-year-old British girl who bent the spoon out of thin air). And Darcy, pay attention.”

"Okay~" Darcy drawled weakly. She tugged at the sorcerer's sleeve with her hand under the table, then gestured "three." The sorcerer extended his hand, bending his other two fingers back. Darcy stubbornly extended another finger, making a "two." Salomon lightly touched that hand with his fist—Darcy meant that three meals were needed to settle the matter, while the sorcerer believed one meal would suffice. Darcy argued that one meal wasn't enough, at least two were needed, and Salomon agreed.

This was a weekend tutoring session, attended by both Darcy and Salomon. Darcy needed to catch up on a lot of basic knowledge because she had switched from social sciences to astronomy (unless she wanted to keep carrying boxes all the time), while Salomon needed to work hard to get into Oxford due to the approaching A-Level exams. What he had told Jane Foster was not unfounded; both Yog-Sothoth and the Eternal God were deities with powers beyond human comprehension, and both of them happened to be connected to him. After tidying up his textbooks, the sorcerer thoughtfully stroked the silver key at his chest—this key, though not yet granting him power, was enough to allow him to glimpse a corner of some of the deepest dark magic; shadows, time, these areas he had initially explored were slowly being enhanced after analyzing the silver key.

But he couldn't rush things. He walked down the empty corridor. He couldn't rush, he couldn't be greedy, he couldn't fall into madness; he had to steadily manipulate the power he could control. Moderation, just as he had with Dormammu. Yog-Sothoth was more dangerous than Dormammu, and he had to reject the temptation of this power from the bottom of his heart, just as he had rejected his own power.

*Slap!* The sudden pat on the shoulder startled him, but before he could react, Darcy Louis casually wrapped her elbow around his neck and pulled him into her arms. "Don't even think about sneaking away!" she laughed. "I don't want fries! Let's decide where we're having lunch! My choice is France, but I don't have a visa and I don't speak French."

"Dassy." Salomon reluctantly broke free from Dassy's embrace. Although it was soft, he didn't want to stay a second longer. "Not today," he said. "I have to see someone, or maybe two, later. They're all in London."

"Who are you going to see? Your girlfriend and your girlfriend's girlfriend are both in New York right now."

"How do you want me to describe the person I'm about to meet? It's the founder of S.H.I.E.L.D. and her boyfriend." Peggy Carter had arranged to meet Captain Rogers after today's classes.

"Who?" Darcy frowned, her face full of confusion.

"Peggy Carter and Captain America."

"Ah, oh..."

"You haven't been to the Captain America Museum, have you?"

"I usually go to the gym to look at muscular men... Could you get me an autographed photo? I want Captain America's, the one with his shirt off."

The meeting with Peggy Carter was slightly earlier than the meeting with Captain Rogers, but to see Peggy Carter, one had to go through several security checks, even though it was Peggy Carter who had taken the initiative to invite him—these checks were all conducted covertly and did not affect Salomon's schedule. The arcane mage simply handed a dagger to the agent in charge of security and successfully entered to meet this legendary woman.

"She doesn't have much time left to be lucid," the caregiver (actually a retired female agent) explained to Salomon, who was sitting by the bed looking at a photo on the headboard. "She just took her medication, so now is not the time for her to be lucid. You'll have to come back another time."

"Let me wait a moment." Salomon waited until the nanny left, still somewhat doubtful, before reaching out and taking Peggy Carter's age-spotted hand in his. After he recited the incantation, Peggy Carter, still asleep on the bed, suddenly opened her eyes after a while, as if waking from a nightmare. Her eyes were no longer aged and confused, but as bright and piercing as they had been in her youth. This was magic that had temporarily activated Peggy Carter's aging brain. The spell "Fox's Cunning" had no side effects, so Salomon used it with confidence—he couldn't use supernatural magic (perhaps not now), nor was he a shape-sculptor (a variant of the Hypnotist class in OA supernatural adventures), and couldn't truly restore Peggy Carter's youth. He was simply somewhat interested in what Nick Fury had said.

"Now, you should answer my questions," Salomon said softly. "Why did you want to instruct someone to adopt me ten years ago, and why do you want to see me now, Peggy Carter?"
