Chapter 291 Modifying Memories
Chapter 291 Modifying Memories (Second Update)
"That's strange." Skye licked her lips. "Why do I taste black tea in my mouth, and have cookie crumbs on my clothes?"
Fitz and Simmons, who were busy in the laboratory converted from the Airbus cargo hold, stopped what they were doing, exchanged a glance, and then nodded. They had discovered the anomaly earlier than Skye, and now the plane was en route to the location of Mission 084. They didn't want to bother Coulson with such a trivial matter, so they could only communicate privately.
As close friends who could talk about anything, they had exchanged opinions long ago.
"We feel the same way you do. We're investigating which chemical is causing this," Simmons said cheerfully. "As far as I know, none of the experimental reagents we loaded onto the plane could make our mouths taste like black tea, so it must be some interesting compound. And since we haven't been poisoned, it must be something harmless. Fitz is testing the air in the cargo hold; perhaps the cabin air needs testing too… Oh, Skye, we won't blame you for sneaking cookies behind our backs. If you get the chance, you can try some of my grandma's cookies."
"Mmm, it's delicious." Fitz nodded in agreement. "When she started school at S.H.I.E.L.D., she brought a huge box of cookies and a bunch of tea bags. She's such a typical Englishwoman."
"If we can find this compound—maybe some kind of special tea polyphenol—then I can save time drinking tea." Simmons smiled at Skye and continued working among a pile of chemicals.
Skye licked her lips again. Hmm, sweet, lots of sugar, pretty much to her liking. She wasn't satisfied with Simmons' explanation; there were just too many suspicious points—she longed for the life of a secret agent, but if you could encounter bizarre things at any moment in your life, then the profession was far too terrible.
Also, why did she subconsciously think of bear cookies when she put the cookie crumbs in her mouth? That's so strange!
However, these doubts were quickly overshadowed by the excitement of participating in an official operation for the first time. She casually put on the sunglasses she had bought earlier, looking around through the dark lenses, making some rather cool agent gestures and coded signals—something she had just seen in the S.H.I.E.L.D. academy's operational guidelines. Perhaps Agent Grand Ward didn't care whether she could fight, but Skye was still very interested in going out on missions.
Wait, sunglasses? When did I buy sunglasses? Skye quickly took off her sunglasses and glanced at them, then reached into her jeans pocket and pulled out a crumpled store receipt.
When did I go to New York?
"May?" Agent Coulson approached Agent Melinda May, who was piloting the airbus, with a form in hand. "After this mission is over, we have somewhere to go."
"where?"
"New York, we're going to visit someone."
At the center of all the strange events, Salomon calmly sipped his tea and pushed cookies toward the guests. However, the guests at this apartment had changed. This time, the guest was in rather dire condition; the sorcerer had rescued him from the entryway carpet. Had Salomon not been a moment too late in leaving, the guest would have suffocated under the carpet, and the homunculus would have stabbed him.
Nick Fury wiped the sweat from his brow and asked the sorcerer sitting leisurely opposite him, "How was it?"
The feeling of being suffocated under the blanket was extremely uncomfortable—hot, stuffy, and cramped. The blanket almost broke his ribs and twisted his spine. Even so, he was unwilling to take off his black leather trench coat—it was a high-tech bulletproof vest, and the clothes underneath were also bulletproof.
"Are you really that concerned about Coulson's team? Where did you hide when they visited? Upstairs, or around the corner of the stairs? I thought you had withdrawn those surveillance agents, but it seems another agent has information about me."
"Remember what you said? Coulson will save the world. I think it's time. Agent Coulson is a non-existent person. Not many people know that Agent Coulson was resurrected, and even fewer know about GH325," Nick Fury said smugly. "I need Coulson to help me investigate that force within S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents below Level 8 clearance cannot know anything about him. As a deeply hidden agent, only this kind of work can make him effective. He can save S.H.I.E.L.D., and S.H.I.E.L.D. can save the world—that's what your vague prophecy was about."
"But that doesn't explain why you gave him my address."
"Because I've already paid for your help, Salomon." Nick Fury pointed to his one eye. "Don't tell me you didn't take that money. I don't know why you suddenly need worldly currency, but isn't it normal for me to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to buy your help?"
"This is an insult to my character."
"Really? Then tell me, who else in this world would put a broom under their butt and have it fly into the sky?"
"Perhaps it's one of the disobedient students at Hogwarts. I'll have an owl write to inquire for you. You know, Professor Dumbledore and I have a pretty good relationship..."
"My God, Salomon! Do you want me to expose more of your illegal activities?" the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. said with a sneer. "You think I don't know whose territory this neighborhood is in? While S.H.I.E.L.D. isn't so low as to mingle with street gangs, it's not difficult for us to get some information."
"I didn't take any of those gangsters' lives," Salomon said, spreading his hands innocently. "They're always trying to harass the residents of this building. Everyone here lives in a decent house, and nothing like this has ever happened before. So I just taught a few thugs who were trying to sell drugs a lesson; it's nothing serious."
"You didn't kill them, but they'll be in the hospital for a whole year, incurring huge surgical costs. I really don't understand why you would do something like this; why did you smash their bones with bullets?"
"I'm too lazy to use my fists. Besides, I didn't illegally possess any guns; those guns belong to them."
"Anyway, Salomon," Nick Fury said, "I'd like you to provide some assistance to Agent Coulson, especially since he accidentally touched something related to magic. You're the only expert I know in this area."
"Didn't you tell Stark and Captain Rogers about Coulson's message?"
"No, they can't know this yet... They will find out someday, but not now."
"Alright, but I have to tell you, it's impossible—because they've forgotten why they came here." The sorcerer blinked. "This is a spell I recently learned, and I'm still a bit clumsy when casting it, so they might forget something they shouldn't have."
"Goodbye, Nick Fury," Salomon said, his tone as if he were saying goodbye.
