Chapter 317 The Foundation of Norse Mythology
Chapter 317 The Foundation of Norse Mythology (Second Update)
Writing letters is the best way to communicate; this has always been Salomon's belief. When people correspond, they unconsciously become more serious with their language, which is completely different from speaking on the internet, because the recipient knows the sender's address. If you speak carelessly, the other party might actually come to your door to discuss it.
Salomon's eternal wish was to beat up all the trash-talking brats on the internet, and now artificial intelligence could help him do just that. However, he didn't waste time on this tedious task because he was about to take an exam. He had made many preparations for this exam, spending much of the time that should have been spent learning magic on reviewing science courses. His foster mother, out of simple good intentions, set a time limit for his review and even asked a witch to supervise him.
Similarly, driven by adolescent rebellion, Salomon did quite a few things in secret. His ability to hide things under books was superb, and the only person to discover his little tricks was Darcy, who shared the same tutor as him. Because Thor had been away from Earth lately, Jane Foster's temper had become increasingly irritable, and she always looked annoyed when pointing out Salomon's wrong answers. So Salomon's little gadgets became his and Darcy's only entertainment during weekend classes.
Boys have three eternal loves: dragons, robots, and beautiful girls, and Salomon is no exception. Some of the small magical machines he makes are both beautiful and practical. For example, there's a mechanical spider that can mend wounds and unlock locks, a little fire dragon that can breathe fire to roast marshmallows and popcorn, and a felted wool cat that's no wider than two fingers and is useless except for meowing. Darcy adores these little things.
The most important item, however, was a magical material he had prepared for his journey to Asgard. It was a small clay hammer, and in Salomon's skillful hands, the patterns on its surface were indistinguishable from Thor's hammer. He had also carved many tiny characters inside the hollow clay hammer, prayers praising the Aesir gods, all written in runes.
Hecate's mention of the power of faith gave Salomon some inspiration.
Since Asgard is the embodiment of faith, Thor's hammer, as the symbolic weapon of the next king, is undoubtedly part of Asgardian faith. Therefore, Salomon decided to craft the materials for the third-circle spell "Arcane Hammer" into the shape of Thor's hammer and attempted to endow the spell with power it shouldn't have through idol theory—the method of using this spell is very similar to that of Thor's hammer, both involving throwing the hammer. After several experiments and constant adjustments to the prayers and incantations, Salomon finally imbued the spell with the lightning power it shouldn't have possessed.
In short, he stole the power of Asgardian faith, and since the vessel was a small mud hammer, no one had to pay a price. The Sorcerer Supreme was very pleased with his disciple's ingenious idea—the source of power wasn't limited to magical entities of inner and outer dimensions; Asgard, so close at hand, was also a good source. If Salomon brought this small mud hammer to Asgard for a period of time, the power of this spell might become even stronger, until it was exactly the same as the hammer thrown by Thor. As long as Salomon didn't use it ostentatiously, even Odin wouldn't notice the abnormality of this spell; the Allfather would at most think that this magic was created based on the rune Thurisaz (Mjolnir, Thor's hammer).
There are many similar spells on Earth, but most are based on church legends, such as St. George slaying the dragon, hymns, the Spear of Longinus, and the Shroud of Turin. However, for various reasons, the effects of these spells gradually weakened until they became completely powerless.
Therefore, after Thor's arrival, Salomon chose to use Norse mythology as a foundation to enhance his magic, and unknowingly plundered the faith of the Asgardian gods on Earth. Although the statement that "Asgardians are aliens" was arranged by the Sorcerer Supreme to be posted on social media by Kamar-Taj, there were still some weak-willed people who believed in the Aesir. Salomon used this power without any psychological burden.
To reward this progress, the Sorcerer Supreme deliberately covered for Salomon. When Athena asked where he was, the Sorcerer Supreme didn't mention Salomon's participation in the school's idol concert, only saying that Salomon was attending extracurricular tutoring. Of course, this didn't ultimately escape Athena's notice; she knew her adopted son too well. When Salomon excitedly opened the portal back to the apartment, he found Athena and Bayonetta leisurely sitting on the sofa, waiting for him to walk right into their trap—he hadn't even had time to drop his LED glow stick before Athena grabbed him for spear training.
Bayonetta waited for him to come home after training so she could continue her "sweet punishment" of him.
"Boss!" Maya Hansen, her hair disheveled and drowsy, stumbled into Salomon's study. In the Immortal City, only Maya Hansen could walk straight into Salomon's office without fear of magical retaliation, and she could browse all the books on the shelves without permission—a privilege granted to her by the arcane mage.
"Ready to ship, Boss!" Maya Hansen rubbed her eyes, her entire being reeking of formaldehyde and radiating anger. Not long ago, she had been preparing specimens of the internal organs of dark magic creatures and classifying the organs—a crucial task vital for understanding the ecology of these creatures. To prevent the organs from rotting, she had to work quickly, hence her current agitated state.
"Are you still playing with mud?" she said, pointing to a neat row of small clay hammers on the table, somewhat displeased. "Exams are almost here! Stop wasting your time; you'll be a college student soon!"
"This is progress in magic, Ms. Hansen. Have you read the occult books I asked you to study?" Salomon rolled her eyes. "Weren't you enjoying the little guy I gave you? Why are you neglecting your duties now?"
Salomon was referring to a group of mechanical spiders with long, slender legs. These creatures, under Maya Hansen's command, could dissect and suture targets, preventing her from accidentally contracting infections while working. However, these things didn't improve the attitude of his subordinates—"I have work to do!" Ms. Hansen began to complain. "I'm busy! I don't have time! You didn't pay me to remind you of your exam time!"
"When are you going to hire another researcher?"
"Should I post a job ad and hire some recent college graduates to be my assistants? I'm fed up with having to do everything myself, from preparing reagents to handling biological waste! What, confidentiality? Can your robots help me out then? Or you could get those druids to help me, anyway, you can't get them to plant any trees, and they're always huddled together doing who-knows-what!"
"Boss, when are you going to bring me some more dark magic creatures? I'm running out of experimental materials! The effects of the mutation alchemy potion on dark magic creatures are still inconclusive; I need more experiments. Oh, and about publishing my paper, I know an editor-in-chief; I can publish my biological findings under a different name..."
