Chapter 319 The Asgardian Goat
Chapter 319 The Asgardian Goat (Second Update)
This trip to Asgard was very rushed. Salomon was supposed to spend some quality time with Bayonetta after dealing with the school's affairs, but the Sorcerer Supreme hastily dumped him in Asgard, which makes one wonder what exactly happened in the palace.
But it certainly wasn't for a banquet. Salomon quietly stuck out his tongue. He couldn't understand why the Asgardians didn't get tired of eating such oily and salty food every day.
Salomon walked briskly towards the library of Asgard. He hadn't changed into Asgardian court attire—Asgardian nobles loved gold, so their clothes were adorned with numerous gold-threaded patterns. Compared to their clothing, Salomon's scutes robes appeared somewhat plain. However, he still quite liked the artistic style of the Aesir gods. The sharply defined, openwork gold decorations paired with cool-toned fills, and the ubiquitous exquisite dark gold reliefs, made the entire Asgardian palace appear completely devoid of any nouveau riche ostentation.
Asgard's obsession with gold is evident in every corner of the palace—the reliefs in the corridors are gold, the patterns on the floor tiles are gold, the decorative flowers placed to one side are gold, and even Heimdall's eyeballs... wait, don't you need to guard the Rainbow Bridge?
"I'll be your guide." Heimdall stood in the corridor, still with that stern expression.
He knew Salomon's special nature, so he didn't show the usual coldness he displayed towards Kamar-Taj diplomats—though it wasn't exactly warm either. The arcane mage blinked; he had already guessed the meaning of Heimdall's visit: Odin was all too familiar with the nature of the spellcasters of Kamar-Taj; the conditions he had reached with the Sorcerer Supreme were one aspect, and Salomon's spontaneous actions were another.
While Asgard welcomed Salomon, he was strictly forbidden from wandering around, especially from visiting its secret and heavily guarded areas. The Aesir used the banquet to keep Kasirius occupied and the library card to keep Salomon occupied, partly to prevent them from gathering information. However, the Sorcerer Supreme's magic, which had been imprinted on the Shroud of Resurrection, was not so easily seen through. Odin went so far as to send Heimdall as a spy, with Salomon as his primary target. Heimdall, through observing Kasirius, discovered that Salomon was not attending the banquet, and immediately reported this to Odin, the Allfather.
"Give him what pleases him," said the Father of Gods. "Keep your eyes on him as on your own fingers."
Then the scene from before unfolded. Heimdall's job was to keep Salomon's dirty pink paws away from Asgard's secrets, but Heimdall didn't see it that way. Even with the magic covering his tracks, he was confident in his abilities and believed his job had another purpose.
“Young people are all foolish, especially humans. Excessive hormones and adrenaline make people stupid.” In his eyes, Salomon was a completely different story. Heimdall thought, “Foolishly prying into secrets, recklessly attacking an enemy he knows is invincible, without a plan, without foresight. I don’t care what he finds; my job is to prevent this human from running off to the forest to fight goats while I’m blinking—and he doesn’t even look like he can beat them. Perhaps taking him to the dungeon would be easier; wizards can always discuss the philosophical implications of something for ages, and maybe Loki could grab his attention. Or maybe I should take him to the training grounds for some training; the Sorcerer Supreme and the Allfather would certainly agree.”
If Salomon had read Heimdall's thoughts, he would have only scoffed. Goats? Is there anyone in this world who can't beat a goat? When he stepped off the Rainbow Bridge onto the surface of Asgard, he saw many merchants and commoners driving carts with goats, a stark contrast to the desolate scene he had witnessed on his last visit to Asgard.
The only thing that intrigued him was why the Asgardians didn't put a dung bag under the goats' rear ends.
Why don't these goats poop? Are they bionic electronic goats?
Of course, Salomon was completely unaware that Heimdall was speculating about his thoughts based on Thor and Loki's childhood behavior patterns. He was also unaware that the so-called "goat" of Asgard was something entirely different. It was a large, even-toed ungulate that also had horns. Thor had wrestled with that so-called "goat" when he was a child, and Heimdall had no doubt that, given a human's physical strength, being crushed into a pulp was the most likely outcome.
"Very good." Salomon didn't object to Heimdall's surveillance, nor did he intend to rummage around Asgard. He stepped over the shadows and dark gold reliefs in the corridor and continued towards the library. The beginner's textbook on runes he possessed had come from this library. There weren't many secret books here; the more powerful runes were in Odin's study, those books were compiled by the Father of the Gods himself.
"I'm sure you're familiar with libraries, so let's go treasure hunting in this dusty library. It's... reeks of book dust; I can smell the gloom even before it's open. I don't understand why the nobles of Asgard hate studying so much." Before he could even show the parchment to the library guards, they opened the magically sealed doors themselves. Salomon turned around and saw Heimlda silently following him, getting closer and closer, as if she wanted to fix her eyes on Salomon.
"Because they've already read those books," Heimlda replied calmly.
"Ugh (disgusted voice)! Don't look at me like that, don't come any closer, you smell like goat and seawater, my horned-headed friend. What is this... Alfheim Elf Joke Collection? Good heavens, Asgard's library actually has this stuff!"
After descending the ladder, Heimdall dusted off his hands; he had found the book on the top shelf of the library. Give him what pleases him—it was the command of the Allfather, so Heimdall had placed the most interesting book in the library into the hands of the sorcerer. He had read this book before; no one knew why it was included, but it was said to have existed since the library's inception, and every Asgardian noble had read it in their childhood.
He believed this thing would attract Salomon's attention and make him spend a lot of time on it.
Furthermore, as the chief intelligence officer who had seen all of Asgard's documents, Heimdall always felt that the handwriting in this book was somewhat similar to that of the Allfather. However, he had long since banished this blasphemous thought from his mind, and he had no intention of telling anyone about this discovery.
If that didn't work, he would ask the Allfather for permission to invite Salomon to visit Loki. They would surely have many topics to discuss, such as satire; Heimdall could even imagine the nerdy atmosphere filling the dungeon. He believed that Salomon and Loki's meeting would be very pleasant.
