Chapter 359 The Demented Old Man
Chapter 359 The Demented Old Man (Second Update)
Paracelsus von Hohenheim, one of only two people in history to have created the Philosopher's Stone, has far more information available about him than Nicholas Flamel. Kamar-Taj contains much material about him, but that is primarily research on him.
However, information about Paracelsus's magical achievements and his later life is quite scarce. While Salomon's androids and Paracelsus's terrapins share the same principle—both creating life by separating one's own life and soul—their actual methods of creation are completely different. Salomon used alchemical souls and bionic flesh, and his experiments avoided blood and gooey substances. Paracelsus's experiments, on the other hand, were far more unsanitary, and his androids were also small contraptions made of human flesh.
There are many conflicting accounts of his death—one being that he was killed by Kamar-Taj sorcerers for trying to reveal the existence of magic to the public (according to the elders of the sorcerer families), and another being that he died after fighting a dark wizard who wanted to steal the Philosopher's Stone (according to Mordo). However, all these legends seem to have been covered up, and no one can tell the truth from the falsehood.
Aside from the Sorcerer Supreme, but the Sorcerer Supreme doesn't want to say. Salomon believes it's the former, because the ritual dagger Paracelsus created from the Philosopher's Stone is in the museum at the Temple in London, which is very likely a magical artifact confiscated after the battle.
Salomon obtained permission from the Sorcerer Supreme to use the short sword, along with the quarter of the Aether he received, to conduct research and trace back the creation process of the Philosopher's Stone to achieve immortality—of course, Salomon wasn't too concerned about immortality; he always felt that his lifespan would reach an extremely exaggerated level, and his research on the Philosopher's Stone was merely for the sake of the gold and the android warriors.
Therefore, upon returning to his apartment, he immediately threw himself into his work. His fervent research even masked his physical urges; it wasn't until Bayonetta dragged him out of his study that he realized he was trembling with hunger. The witch seemed quite displeased with Salomon's research enthusiasm, believing he was ignoring her efforts. "You mean, swimsuits and sunbathing?" the sorcerer kissed the witch's disgruntled face. "We still have time. I'm researching the Philosopher's Stone to extend our family's lifespan; that's the right way to stay together forever."
"We'd better not become long-faced old ladies." The witch seemed to accept Salomon's assessment. Slightly relieved, she returned the kiss to the sorcerer's lips. "But what you need to do now isn't research the Philosopher's Stone, but rather have a light dinner. I've heard a lot about Asgardian cuisine; if you don't eat something light, acne will come knocking, and then no matter how much your older sister tries to please you, it won't be enough."
The witch ignored Salomon's blushing face and continued, "By the way, while you were in the study, your mother also came. She seemed to have something to tell you."
"Athena? What's she doing here?" Salomon couldn't fathom the goddess of wisdom's thoughts. Wisdom and intelligence are not the same thing; the latter refers to a person's thinking ability when facing a problem, distinguishing between an event and an object, while the former refers to a person's insight. Athena may have discovered some clues and deduced what would happen in the future, which is why she took the initiative to seek out Salomon.
"I don't know what kind of trouble the Sorcerer Supreme has gotten himself into, but I do know what 'god' tastes like." Athena, holding a glass of brandy, sat calmly on the main sofa. "I don't think I've told you about the struggle between Zeus, the king of the gods, and Odin, the father of the gods. As you can probably guess, the apex predators of the various pantheons naturally don't get along well. Zeus, as the king of the gods, didn't get along well with Odin, so I've also glimpsed some of the battles between these two gods..."
"Today shouldn't be story time, Mother." Salomon took three bottles of cola from the refrigerator and handed them to the witches sitting on the sofa. He then sat down to one side, wanting to hear the hidden meaning in Athena's words.
"Zeus, the king of the gods, is related to Vishanti and Gaia by blood, which gives him unparalleled power. Even with such immense power, Zeus still couldn't defeat Odin," Athena said to herself. She took a sip of her wine, trying to hide the look of horror on her face as she recalled witnessing that battle years ago. "That was one of the rare times Zeus fought with his full strength. Apart from Typhon, few could make Zeus fight at his absolute best. I'm telling you this not for any other reason than to remind you that those kings of the gods who stand at the pinnacle of the pantheon are not to be underestimated."
"But now!" Athena exclaimed angrily, "You Kamar-Taj have actually reached such a terrible agreement with the Aesir! Have you considered Odin, the Allfather, your reaction?!"
"What does this mean?" Salomon asked, puzzled.
"Oh? Don't you know?" Athena pointed out the window, "The Allfather is rummaging through the trash can downstairs looking for food! Hurry up and take him back! I can't let the Aesir discover the connection between the Olympian pantheon and Kamar-Taj!"
------------
Salomon, looking utterly disheveled, ate his bread and hopped onto his motorcycle.
Thanks to the prosperity of this community, there are hardly any homeless people to be seen. Even if there are, they are quickly taken to shelters. The arcane mage has no way of predicting the location of an being of the Allfather's caliber, so he can only ride his motorcycle through every corner of the community searching for any homeless old man who might be Odin. He also makes phone calls, asking his apprentices who haven't participated in the outer dimension battles to come and help search, to make sure the Allfather isn't sleeping in some trash can.
Damn Loki, how can he move so fast!
The wizard felt a surge of annoyance. He had initially assumed Loki would send Odin to some clean and tidy retirement home, but he hadn't expected Loki to dislike Odin so much that he would simply dump him on the streets of New York, leaving Salomon frantically searching for that senile old man! He had already called Frigga, the Queen of the Gods, to inform her that Odin had been sent to Earth. He only hoped that Frigga would act quickly and find the Allfather before he was sent to a retirement home for euthanasia.
Otherwise, there would be an old man in the shelter who wouldn't die no matter how much cyanide he was injected with!
"Did you find him?" Salomon asked one of his apprentices. The apprentice shook his head—Salomon sighed. He couldn't possibly search every corner of New York City in a short time to find every one-eyed old man scavenging for food in the trash! Athena had also summoned all the owls and snakes of New York City for Salomon's use, but Odin, the one-eyed old man, seemed to have vanished into thin air, appearing briefly near Salomon's apartment before disappearing again.
"Perhaps you could try asking at the Doorless Bar." This apprentice was clearly a wizard who had joined Kamar-Taj later in life, and like Kasirius, they were very familiar with the magical bars of New York. Salomon rejected this unreliable suggestion. If the wizards at the Doorless Bar knew that Odin was on Earth, those who craved runic magic would do anything.
For the sake of the demented Odin, Kamar-Taj has no choice but to search alone. Alternatively, if the Queen of the Goddess could directly foretell Odin's whereabouts, it would save some trouble. Salomon only hopes that Odin doesn't need adult diapers now.
Indeed, this was the first time he had prayed to Vishanti, and he only hoped that this wish would be granted.
