Chapter 534 The Victor
Chapter 534 The Victor (First Update)
Nick Fury nonchalantly brushed off his lime-covered black leather jacket, his single black eye flashing like a hallucinogen. He strode out of the abandoned building and stood beside the empty trash can. Those addicts had nothing, let alone garbage; they would trade anything they had for drugs, even the urine of the addicts living in the same building—people in withdrawal were like animals, a sight Nick Fury had witnessed more than once. In the neighborhood where he grew up, opium, morphine, heroin, LSD, cocaine, and drugs were a curse hanging over everyone's heads, mingling with anti-war culture, hippies, and garbage everywhere—some Americans would blame the Chinese for Americans' opium addiction, the cocaine epidemic on Black people, and the drug epidemic on Mexicans, but Nick Fury knew from childhood that addictive drugs had nothing to do with race; it was purely a matter of personal will.
That's why he worked so hard to climb out of that neighborhood, join the Vietnam War, and become a secret agent.
In a sense, he escaped the most common fate of African Americans—dying on the street from drug overdose or being shot by the police.
"I dare say that what S.H.I.E.L.D. does makes the world a better place. But we can't take care of everyone, and we can't completely eradicate drugs; that's not within S.H.I.E.L.D.'s jurisdiction," he said loudly. "I'm standing here where neither satellites nor surveillance cameras can find me, and you're unwilling to step out of the shadows and talk to me?"
“It’s not that I can’t do it, it’s that I don’t want to. Stop making excuses for myself. Without drugs, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s budget will be cut. Just like the CIA’s black budget, isn’t it?” Salomon slowly stepped out of the shadows, enduring the stench of excrement and vomit. He carefully tiptoed over the repeatedly used syringes and filth, raising an eyebrow at Nick Fury standing in the moonlight. “The people in that building gave their all to build your aircraft carrier. Shouldn’t you thank them?”
"As I said, I knew absolutely nothing about Hydra before."
"Alright, alright, that's not what I came here for," Salomon waved his hand impatiently. "I want to know where you hid the green-skinned aliens," he said. "As far as I know, the Skrulls haven't found a new home. So they must still be thriving on Earth... Where are the Skrulls, Nick Fury?"
"You completely distrust aliens?" Nick Fury stared intently at the sorcerer with his one eye. "Even if they're benevolent. And what about the Asgardians? I haven't seen you raise your sword against Thor."
"There's nothing we can do. Legally, we're a vassal state of Asgard. At least the fact that Earth doesn't have to pay taxes right now was thanks to His Holiness's efforts. And I did raise my sword, you just didn't see it. When it comes to upholding human sovereignty, Kamar-Taj's knees are harder than anyone else's," Salomon said with a disdainful look and a heavy nasal tone. "This has nothing to do with whether the aliens are friendly or not. The characteristics of the Skrulls and their origins are enough for me to kill them. And the Skrulls you see now are just products of their genes stabilizing—by the way, let me tell you a secret that the Green Amoeba won't tell you. In the Skrulls' religious prophecies, Earth is the land of their revival. So, without exception, the Skrulls you see on Earth are fanatics. They worship Clayburn and other Skrull gods, except those gods were killed by the Asgardians long ago."
Nick Fury stared intently at Salomon, saying nothing more.
"So only an idiot would believe in Skrulls. Whether those guavas are friendly or not, they are aliens who cannot coexist peacefully with humans, or even with any race," Salomon said. "I know you can contact them. Tell me, where are they?"
"What kind of car did you drive here, or did you use a portal?" Nick Fury changed the subject. Salomon readily accepted this change of topic; in his opinion, Nick Fury was simply too proud to admit his mistake and wanted to talk about something else first.
“I ride a horse,” he whistled, and a black Shire horse emerged from the shadows of the street corner. The horse stood two meters tall at the shoulder; only a horse of that size could match his height. “This is Dickens, the first horse in the manor stables, and also my most ordinary horse,” he said. “I can’t ride Pegasus all the time, can I?”
"Salomon..." Nick Fury sighed. "I need them, and I don't completely trust the Skrulls."
“I know, but what good is it? Your initiative is useless against the Skrulls.” Salomon pulled on the reins and leaped onto his horse. The tall steed snorted; clearly, it didn't like the environment either. “You will gather them, won't you?” he said. “That's your only trump card now…maybe, but they're the only ones that can work for you now. Since you won't tell me, then I'll wait for you to gather them. Skrulls isolated from other societies are no threat.”
"I can take them off Earth. The World Security Council doesn't know the locations of all SHIELD bases, but I can give them to you. I know you won't use those bases, but they contain SHIELD's archives. I think you need that. In exchange, let me take the Skrulls."
"Very well, you've delayed your death." Salomon gently tugged at the reins to the right. Dickens slowly turned in a circle and strode through the portal. The horse was completely subdued by Pegasus—Pegasus was taller, stronger, and had a worse temper. "Hurry, my patience isn't very good."
After the swirling sparks illuminating the dark street disappeared, Nick Fury took out his phone and made a call.
"It's alright, Agent Romanov." His face was even more somber than the night. "This matter is resolved. In the future, Hilt will issue orders to you, and she will assume the responsibility of commander. I will disappear for a while; I'm going to a place where even Salomon can't find me. No, don't worry, even if the operation against Hydra is exposed, it won't cause too much of a problem. Pay more attention to Coulson's team... Salomon is too concerned about him; it's abnormal. I don't believe he'd do something pointless."
Natasha Romanov hung up the phone and looked up at Salomon sitting behind his desk. The black horse took up a quarter of the office space, and it even wanted to taste the parchment.
"Nick Fury is leaving Earth," she said.
"I know." The sorcerer winked playfully, a smile spreading across his sculpted face. "I also know where he'll go. Nick Fury always thinks I don't know what he's doing, but I know everything. Although prophecies can only reveal fragments, what I just did was analyze the necessary elements for the prophecy's fulfillment using some information, and then advance the prophecy at key junctures."
"Are you really going to let those aliens go? Or rather, Nick Fury?"
“Frey is very useful,” Salomon said with a smile. “And what he’s going to do is exactly what I wanted him to do. I’ve won again, and he knows it.”
"Where did your maid go?" Natasha asked in alarm.
The sudden disappearance of the android who was always by Salomon's side filled her with a sense of foreboding.
"She went to take care of some things, I think she'll be back in two hours."
