Chapter 581 Exploring Kit City
Chapter 581 Exploring Kit City (Part 2) (Second Update)
The undead soldiers were somewhat rational; after the raiding force was wiped out, the remaining undead soldiers stayed inside the fortress and refused to come out. Every drone that flew into the fortress was shot down by the undead soldiers, with only a few transmitting images. Catherine didn't know if there was a leader among the undead soldiers, but they could only formulate their attack plan based on limited information.
Fortunately, the Kitt City plan that Jacob had mentioned earlier was found.
It was a pentahedron with a lens, projecting sunlight through an opening at the top of the observation tower onto the ground. Designed to monitor the progress of construction in Kit City, it was handcrafted by gem craftsmen recruited by Jacob. Even after his journey from Byzantium to Siberia, the wealth Jacob had amassed along the way, along with gifts from the Byzantine emperor, allowed him to squander it all; using gemstones to create a projection was nothing special. The Sisterhood, already in Kit City, had no interest in finding it, but Laura Crawford's companion Jonah, while hunting with the locals, got lost and happened to find it.
As one of the few survivors of the Dragon Triangle, Jonah's luck was almost maxed out.
Aside from being attacked by the fleeing stragglers of the Holy Trinity, he suffered only minor injuries. Jacob took the opportunity to demonstrate his alchemical skills to Laura. Since his followers were outnumbered and outmatched, Jacob was unable to retake Kitt, so he had no choice but to spend the next thousand years honing his alchemy. Now, Jacob could perform simple alchemical tricks with ease, and healing fatal wounds was no problem for him. If he were to perform the alchemy to resurrect an army, his current skill would make no mistake whatsoever.
Jacob also showed Laura and the recovered Jonah the astronomical facilities of Kite City. These facilities were located in a secret passage beneath the observatory, a shortcut into Kite City that had been abandoned because the forces of the Immortal City needed to transport equipment. This passage also served as a checkpoint preventing the Undead Legion from leaving Kite City; it had been sealed off centuries ago and had only recently been reopened.
Two modern people were astonished to discover that Jacob had built a life-size model of the solar system here. This model predates the heliocentric theory and is extremely precise, capable of revising the calendar. However, this is easily explained: Salomon, who traveled through time, imparted this knowledge to Jacob, who then taught it to his people.
However, during the Mongol invasion of Kit, many wise scholars perished with the rebellious Undead Legion, and many precious books were forever buried beneath the rocks, thwarting Jacob's plan to educate his people. The Byzantine warship Laura had seen was located below Kit; at that time, there was a lake formed by snowmelt that allowed the warship to pass through. After the Undead Legion blasted open the glacier with Greek fire, the warship was buried under a massive layer of ice.
The village's current knowledge is what Jacob has accumulated slowly over a thousand years; it's not much, but it's enough. However, because Jacob became disheartened and didn't assign mandatory learning tasks, there are very few truly knowledgeable people in the village. In the end, the only scholar left abandoned his faith and went to the Soviet Union to participate in its development.
The sophisticated solar system model wobbled slightly, and a blast of icy air, cold enough to freeze one's lungs, billowed from the wind tunnel below. Before anyone else could figure out what was happening, Catherine's voice came through the walkie-talkie on Laura's waist.
She told Laura and Jacob that after nearly three days of work, the engineering team had finally completed all their tasks and blown up the fortress gate, officially opening the road to the interior of Kit City.
Jacob ignored the sorority's rude behavior, and Laura couldn't protest. He said the true owner of the city wasn't him, but Salomon, who was still far away in Oxfordshire, because the city had originally been built for him. This loyal statement won the sorority's favor; they invited Sophia to join the exploration team and guaranteed her safety—the transport ship had several spare, unmarked power armor suits available. Originally intended as replacement parts, Catherine generously lent them to Sophia.
Catherine walked at the front, idly swinging her chainsaw sword.
She had already confirmed with Jacob that there were absolutely no cannons or similar weapons in Kit City; only ballistae could possibly penetrate the weak points of the power armor. Therefore, the Sisterhood had pulled the newly joined recruits from the mission to track down the defeated Trinity soldiers and included them in this exploration mission. Lyudmila and Lilia were both excited and nervous about this mission, not only because they would encounter supernatural phenomena repeatedly mentioned in their school curriculum but which they had never witnessed, but also because they had heard that the Sovereign would fight alongside them.
The monarch urgently issued a tutorial detailing the essence of the [Divine Source]. It was a secondary product of the Philosopher's Stone, repeatedly mentioned in their alchemy classes, possessing the effects of both Natural Tincture and First Honey Flower, though slightly inferior to the Red Elixir created by the Ladies. Even during the process, Lilia, who excelled in alchemy, excitedly recited the profound knowledge she had gleaned from the library—alchemy books written by the monarch. Unlike past alchemy books, which often used illustrations and metaphors, Salomon's knowledge was clear and concise. Aside from explaining some past metaphors, reading these textbooks was like reading a chemistry textbook. There was no mysticism, only formulas and principles—incredibly dry and tedious.
She couldn't wait to see what the [Divine Source] looked like.
Perhaps I could participate in the analysis experiment of the [Divine Source] later? Lilia thought to herself.
Lyudmila could no longer tolerate Lilia's constant chatter on the squad's communication network. Her interests were entirely focused on combat; her passion for swordsmanship was no less than Lilia's passion for alchemy. Therefore, she had chosen to study anatomy and physics and participated in intensive training at a swordsmanship camp, attempting to rival Catherine in swordsmanship.
This is an ambitious goal.
The androids possess alchemical engines for their hearts, and their entire bodies are composed of magically cultivated bionic flesh and blood. Their skeletons are made of indestructible magical alloys, and their highly efficient energy circulation system grants them extremely rapid reactions, making it difficult for ordinary people to match their speed and strength. Furthermore, the girls use force-feedback powered armor, and the systems on them do not directly enhance their reaction time. Therefore, only the most diligent girls can rival the androids in combat skills.
She tapped Lilia's helmet.
"Focus, little one," she said. "We haven't encountered any enemies yet, but they might have already rallied."
"The ladies must have thought of that," Lilia said cheerfully. "And we have guns, we have transport ships. The explosives are powerful enough to destroy any enemy, and the chainsaw can cut through ancient armor. No matter how many enemies there are, I trust you can protect me."
"Shut up! We don't even know if the ladies will support us..."
"Sorry I'm late, Catherine." Salomon didn't bring his holy sword. Rodin's twin swords hung at his waist, making him appear relaxed and carefree. Only the bloodstains on his knuckles and the lingering smell of blood on his body suggested that his lateness was not so simple.
