Chapter 605 Foreseeing the Future
Chapter 605 Foreseeing the Future (Second Update)
"Someone always has to do things that others are unwilling to do. Isn't that the core philosophy of S.H.I.E.L.D.?"
Salomon pushed another piece of cake from his table in front of the boy, then carefully examined the stitches on the boy's neck. The boy still faintly smelled of pungent disinfectant. Although the small implanted wound on his neck was healing faster than normal, it wasn't excessively so. Salomon couldn't use positive energy magic to heal him, lest he disrupt the extremely intricate gene-alchemy array set up during the modification phase; even the slightest mistake could cause the boy's body to collapse.
To maintain the growth of the implanted organ and suppress rejection, the boy must regularly take several special drugs and magical potions produced only in laboratories. Several years later, once the surgery is complete, he will no longer need to worry about this problem; his perfectly designed body will grow its own unique organs on its own.
"You can't expect all of humanity to rely solely on the Avengers when facing future catastrophes," Salomon said, stretching his legs out to the maximum and letting out a satisfied hum. The boy smiled at Salomon. He noticed the secret message the sorcerer had transmitted through magic, and the two exchanged a knowing wink, then lightly bumped fists under the table.
"That's incredibly arrogant and unreasonable." He looked at the displeased Agent Romanov. "Isn't that the truth?"
"That's sophistry, Salomon," Agent Natasha Romanoff bluntly refuted the sorcerer's flimsy argument. She had noticed the little trick Salomon was playing on the boy, and although she didn't know the specifics, that didn't stop her from launching an attack. "You refuse to tell me what kind of disaster awaits you, choosing instead to face it alone." The spy's expression quickly shifted to languid relaxation. "Isn't your distrust of the Avengers or the human government's ability to resolve this crisis also a form of arrogance?"
"Modern secular society is too weak, and the Avengers are too weak; they couldn't even handle the Chitauri invasion. No matter how much Nick Fury values the Avengers, it doesn't change the fact that there are only a few of you. The Chitauri are just the prelude to an alien invasion; what follows is an entire alien fleet arriving in the solar system, and it's not just the Chitauri; other aliens are included as well," the sorcerer said. "That requires the entire human society to fight against, but we all know that the fragmented Earth is simply incapable of doing so, and the United Nations is utterly useless. Under these circumstances, it's difficult for human governments not to resort to surrender. To fight to the end, for the survival of humanity, I must organize my own forces and wage space warfare."
"Thank you for your honesty, Salomon. You see, it wasn't hard to say, was it?" The female spy smiled. She knew Salomon was deliberately revealing information, but it also meant he already had a solution.
"So, you have a solution to this problem?"
"What you're seeing now is one of the costs," Salomon said, pointing at the boy. He had just made a promise with the boy that he would take him to see the seals once his wounds had healed.
Although the boy's memory will become blurred after all the modification surgeries are completed, his personality will be preserved. Therefore, Salomon must begin shaping his personality now, and taking the boy to play with the seals is one of the actions. Salomon does not want anyone else to interfere in this process.
"The price is too high."
"It's insignificant compared to half the planet, or even the entire population." Salomon looked at Natasha. "You can't demand that only you can sacrifice yourself. That's unfair to you, and it might not even be helpful."
"What do you mean by that?" Natasha asked, puzzled.
"It's nothing," Salomon waved his hand. "The training and modifications this child is undergoing are completely different from those I told you about. This child's modifications won't be as cruel, and there's no need for personality cleansing. The other children can only become assassins; the modifications they undergo are unimaginably cruel. This is determined by their future; they must complete their missions at all costs."
Natasha quickly adjusted her mindset and calmed the anger that had been ignited by the provocation.
"Isn't this enough?" A low growl reverberated in her throat.
“Not nearly enough, Natasha. Words alone cannot convey the darkness of the future; only by seeing that fleet with your own eyes will you understand why all of this is necessary.” Salomon swirled his teacup, then placed the unfinished cup back down. Under Natasha’s wary gaze, he took out his slingshot. “You need to see the future.”
After watching Natasha leave through the portal, Salomon remained seated.
He was reasoning about what would happen next.
She might tell the rest of the Avengers about the impending invasion, or she might simply tell them that Salomon is conducting illegal human experiments and genetic modifications. Whatever she chooses, Salomon isn't worried that the Avengers will affect his work; even if Thor acts impulsively, Salomon has ways to handle it.
He wanted to see if Natasha Romanov could be persuaded by him.
The boy gestured curiously, asking what those things were. It was a brain-computer interface communication system, designed by Salomon for silent combat and stealth. "Where we'll fight in the future," the arcane mage cast a spell, sending the words directly into the boy's mind, "first see the seals, then go for wilderness survival training."
The boy smiled and nodded.
His subconscious had already undergone many unimaginable horrors, and he felt no fear whatsoever of wilderness survival training and outdoor survival, which would be difficult even for many adults. He already knew where the training location was and had received knowledge implanted from mental illusions and brain-computer interfaces. He viewed it as an interesting challenge rather than arduous training, just like shooting training with a bomb gun—a way to pass the time during his free time while undergoing modification.
The only course that motivated him to train diligently was close-quarters combat, personally instructed by Salomon. Even though mental illusions and brutal brain-computer interfaces could teach the boy how to use fighting techniques, a warrior without practical combat training was unqualified. Swordsmanship, spears, halberds, shields—almost all mainstream melee weapons and armor combat methods were incorporated into the curriculum. Due to a series of growth hormones secreted by his special organs, he was extremely active, and he thoroughly enjoyed this course that allowed him to release his excess energy.
Not long after, Maya Hansen walked over with a gloomy expression. Her dark circles were getting worse, making her eyes look incredibly fierce and irritable. As soon as she arrived, the boy obediently stood up from his chair and extended his hand to Maya Hansen.
She glared at the thoughtful sorcerer, then took the boy's hand and led him back. She was truly worried about her precious experimental subject wandering around, and she was even more opposed to the extreme training Salomon was imposing on the boy. She believed it was detrimental to the subject's physical stability, even if it was for the purpose of conditioning the implant to the body. Having just completed preparations for the second phase of modification, the boy still needed to undergo several surgeries before he could remove his headphones, move freely, and temporarily say goodbye to several anti-rejection drugs.
The boy turned around and waved goodbye to Salomon, but the wizard was still lost in his own thoughts.
Salomon propped his head up with his hand and did not respond.
