Chapter 628 This is our battlefield

Chapter 628 This is Our Battlefield (First Update)

Like a silver sword piercing the twilight, the supersonic Quinjet arrived in Sokovia before dawn. The Avengers discussed their general plan of action aboard the Quinjet; even Captain Rogers was prepared to die in battle. "Ultron knew we were coming, so a fierce battle is inevitable," he said. "We are ready, but the people of Sokovia are not. They only crave a peaceful life. But today, that's impossible. We must do everything in our power to protect them and complete our mission."

The captain glanced at the Maximov siblings and then assigned them tasks. Pietro, the fastest, could notify the Sokovians to evacuate, and Wanda's magic would force them to do so, preventing panic and distress and ensuring efficient evacuation. "If Vision is right, then Ultron is extremely obsessed with patricide," the captain said. "We need to figure out Ultron's purpose, and also find Agent Romanov. We need to clear this area and prevent the war from harming innocent people. Ultron thinks we are monsters, that we are the scourge of this world, so this isn't just about defeating him, but also about proving his views correct."

The boy watched as the brand-new Quinjet landed near the dilapidated Orthodox chapel in Sokovia. He activated his personal terminal, adjusted the receiver, and sent a message to the attack force. His orders instructed him to continue surveillance. The Sky Carrier was far slower than the supersonic Quinjet, and when the boy sent the message, the Sky Carrier was still some distance from Sokovia. He discovered that his target, Tony Stark, had deviated from the tactical plans overheard by the Immortal City. Instead of rescuing Agent Natasha Romanov, he had landed in his Iron Man suit in the chapel courtyard. That was a blind spot for the surveillance location, and the boy could only monitor the area using a hidden camera he had placed on the other side of the courtyard. The high-tech microphone even allowed him to hear the noise from the Iron Man suit's joint servos.

He remembered seeing the female agent, but he was climbing through the pipes at the time, and Natasha Romanov hadn't seen his face. Even so, she recognized him by his voice. Sokovia's underground pipe system was terrible; the boy still felt a pain in his elbow when he thought about it.

He communicated with the female spy he had met once through the ventilation shaft, and after receiving her assurance that he could escape alone, he returned the way he came. Natasha Romanov is very likely to join the Immortal City's intelligence department in the future; she is an important target, and the monarch will not allow her to die so easily.

The boy knew what was in that church, and Stark was walking right into his trap.

The morning sun had not yet pierced through the dusty stained glass windows, and the church was quite dim. Ultron stood in the shadows, his tone much like that of a priest awaiting the confession of a lost sheep.

"Are you here to repent?"

"I don't know," Tony Stark said casually. "How much time do you have?"

"I have more than you anyway," Ultron said mischievously. It walked onto the sun-drenched, earthen-yellow tiles and drew back the crimson veil draped over itself. Only then did Stark realize that this version of Ultron was larger and more sophisticated than any he had seen before. Without needing any new AI analysis, he could visually identify the Stark technology embedded in this version of Ultron. Ultron had solved many technical problems through computation, applying technologies that had only existed on paper to its own creation.

"Have you been overeating?" Tony Stark asked. "Did you drink too many vibranium cocktails? You look... I really don't want to use 'bloated' to describe you, but..."

"You're stalling for time so you can protect the civilians." Ultron's facial structure is incredibly sophisticated, capable of making remarkably human expressions. While it's not yet fully human-like, Stark believes that given time, Ultron can do anything. This is the tool humanity needs most, but unfortunately, it's also what caused the current situation.

"This is our mission, have you forgotten?"

"But it's not mine." Before this, Ultron, after being given a mind, often maintained a subtle sense of humor, but now its humor was utterly cold. It said softly, with malice, "I am free."

Suddenly, the tacit morning silence of the Sokovians was shattered, the sound originating from the small Orthodox chapel. Through the camera, the boy saw a silver, pillar-like object, reflecting sunlight, drill through the ancient chapel floor tiles, like a drilling rig excavating upwards, until it reached a height of about eight feet before stopping. As the external structure of this pillar opened, a complex mechanical structure was revealed, with some things he didn't understand rotating incessantly—the boy subconsciously assumed it was related to the anti-gravity device mentioned by the Immortal City's General Staff, but he didn't know exactly what it was.

He still sent the message to the Immortal City. A few seconds later, he received the message.

Without hesitation, the boy smashed the glass window with his elbow, drew his plasma pistol from his waist, and aimed at the wall of the Orthodox church. Through long training, his hand gripped the gun steadily, and he calculated where he was to fire. The boy firmly pulled the trigger; the azure acceleration coils hummed, and the fully ionized plasma, confined by a powerful electromagnetic field, was accelerated and ejected, its ionized trajectory, heated to the sun's temperature, instantly vaporizing the wall that had stood there for centuries. Immediately afterward, a violent explosion shattered the windows of nearby buildings. Although the boy managed to protect his vitals in time, the shockwave still violently threw him to the ground.

"commander!"

"I know!" Tita watched as the holographic projection on the bridge command system displayed a city soaring into the sky. Some buildings on the edge collapsed, and endless debris rained down like an inverted mountain floating in the air. Thousands of robots poured out of Sokovia's streets and alleys. Ultron had clearly noticed these sky carriers emerging from their cloaked state. Tita decisively issued the order. "Increase the power of the lower-level engines, ascend in sync with the city, and surround Sokovia according to the battle plan! Activate the fire control radar!" The android said solemnly, "Our mission is not rescue, but destruction! Now, the operation begins. Special operations teams, board the assault transport ships. Sisters of the Order assault teams, prepare for direct landing!"

As the reactors groaned, the modified Skycarrier rapidly adjusted its engine power. The power of the rear engines gradually decreased, while the engines located beneath the ship emitted longer, cone-shaped plasma flames, propelling the Skycarrier upwards. Simultaneously, numerous gates opened on the forward and flank armor plates of the Skycarrier, revealing Alexander Pierce's supergun, which, guided by radar, was aimed at the approaching Ultron Legion.

The flagship's superguns opened fire first, unleashing thousands of machine gun shells upon the approaching Ultron Legion. With the roar of engines, assault transport craft aboard the Sky Carrier sped out of their hatches, like raptors hurtling in, clearing a landing zone with unparalleled firepower. The assault transport craft that landed on the landing zone opened their hatches, and a combat force comprised of special operations teams and Sisters of the Legion assault troops immediately rushed out.

The sorority raised their chainsaw swords high and roared battle cries as they fervently charged onto the battlefield.

"For the monarch!"
