Chapter 668 Plane Crash
Chapter 668 Plane Crash (First Update)
Three air carriers opened fire simultaneously, their scorching shells even tracing bright paths through the thick clouds, revealing starlight hidden behind the clouds. Before the deafening roar reached the lighthouse, violent explosions lit up the sea. Vast amounts of seawater evaporated into a dense white mist, then were instantly vaporized into steam by the expanding flames. Orange-red flames shot straight into the sky, engulfing the enormous, grayish-white worm. Agent Victoria Hand immediately ordered all firepower to be poured into the misty steam while the main guns cooled down—machine guns, rockets, and even the latest plasma cannons—intending to pulverize the monster into the smallest atoms. At the same time, assault transport ships in the hangar took off fully loaded with ammunition, launching their missiles and shells into the area.
The storm clouds were shattered by the deafening explosions that echoed across the entire sea, and a clear, circular sky cast moonlight onto the ocean. Gunpowder replaced thunder, and the surging waves contracted due to the massive evaporation of seawater, allowing even the town of Yarmouth to clearly see the light illuminating the sky. The overwhelming firepower made the agents on the bridge forget the previous terror, forget the cowards who had been executed. They stood up, cheering, embracing, and celebrating the might of human ingenuity in defeating monsters that were beyond human comprehension and could easily shatter reason. Even the sorcerers of Kamar-Taj rejoiced in this victory.
Wanda covered her ears tightly, curling up to shield herself from the continuous explosions. Although her physical and spiritual eyes were sealed by an eyepatch embroidered with golden runes, her senses still reported two intertwined destructive forces and the lingering madness emitting silent howls ahead. If she lifted the eyepatch, she would see how close the explosions were. Scalding white steam almost enveloped the entire Midway Rock, the brightness of the explosions even surpassing the lighthouse's brightest beam. Most of the flames and high-temperature steam from the explosions were blocked by Salomon's barrier. Her teacher stood before her, unusually waving his arms, his emotions running high. This was the first time humanity had wielded the hammer of modern warfare technology against extradimensional monsters. It was hard for a sorcerer not to be thrilled, for this meant that humanity was not a weak lamb when facing extradimensional enemies. One day, this hammer would be wielded against aliens, demons, devils, angels, and even gods who sought to exterminate humanity! Salomon imagined with joy.
Even the Celestials, who use humans as experimental subjects for genetic testing, will face the fangs of humanity in the future!
Residents of the coastal areas of Yarmouth, Falmouth, Cumberland, and Freeport had no idea what was happening. All they knew was that the earthquake had destroyed their homes, power was intermittent, and the storm had left many homeless. When the earthquake stopped, a blinding light illuminated Casco Bay. The darkness and the distant rumble intensified their panic, with many crying out in terror. Some saw it as the end of the world, or another alien invasion, and began looting with guns in the streets, flooding the local police hotline with calls from the public. Locals were astonished to find that they couldn't log onto social media to share what was happening. Even trying to photograph distant scenes of war with their phones rendered them unusable.
Someone is covering all this up!
Americans familiar with conspiracy theories immediately grasped this point. Even though local police repeatedly claimed they hadn't received any instructions from higher authorities, the public scrutinized their announcements with suspicion, and rumors spread like wildfire. However, their thoughts and the casualties of this earthquake were negligible compared to those orchestrating the whole affair—the 1886 earthquake had affected almost the entire East Coast, stretching from Boston, Massachusetts in the north, to Chicago, Illinois, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the northwest, to New Orleans, Louisiana in the west, to Cuba in the south, and to Bermuda in the east. If the macrophage worm hadn't been lured out beforehand, it would have inevitably touched the ancient lava belt, triggering an earthquake far exceeding the magnitude 7.3 of the 1886 Charleston earthquake. The current situation, with only wooden houses and a few concrete buildings collapsing, was already a result of minimizing the damage.
Steve Rogers frantically tore at the seatbelts of the surviving agents, trying to rescue them before the Quinjet was completely submerged. But the undercurrents and several-meter-high waves flipped the slowly sinking Quinjet, throwing him from the gangway into the cockpit. Icy seawater was rushing in. He didn't know what had caused it—as the Quinjet flew along its planned route, the pilot had suddenly started flailing his arms and shouting incomprehensible words. Before he and the other agents in the back could stop him, the Quinjet accelerated and plunged into the sea. Forces have consequences, Steve Rogers knew that, and he was lucky the plane wasn't torn to pieces.
The pilot died instantly; the immense impact crushed his skull against the instrument panel. Several other agents' bodies floated nearby, most of them twisted by the force or drowned while unconscious. Had he not instinctively shielded himself with his shield, he too would likely have been crushed to death on the instrument panel. Captain Rogers rolled over in the water, pushed the pilot's head aside, and fumbled across the instrument panel from memory—the Quinjet had flipped over, and Captain Rogers, clinging to the cockpit, was being pounded in by seawater. He released his grip, attempting to pull the life jacket and the unconscious but still alive agents out through the rear hatch, swimming to the surface.
"Captain Rogers!" Vision's upper body was half-submerged in the flooded plane, his form like a phantom ghost. Although Captain Rogers already knew Vision's abilities, he was still startled. The sea was right outside the plane; Captain Rogers had no idea how deep the Quinjet had sunk. "Need any help?"
"certainly!"
"Captain, I'm so glad you're alive!" Falcon stood at the bow of the lifeboat, watching Vision raise Shield One Quinjet from the water. Another Quinjet hovered above him. Captain Rogers jumped out of the rear hatch, and a new lifeboat slowly inflated.
"A drowning dog, is it?"
"It's good to see you, Sam! But I'm not in the mood for jokes right now; many people have sacrificed their lives." Captain Rogers helped the now-conscious agent climb into the lifeboat. "Do you know what happened?"
"Isn't it obvious? This is war! I see artillery!" Falcon pointed to the dense network of fire in the distance, and Captain Rogers looked in the same direction. Since World War II, modern warfare technology has largely abandoned positional warfare, focusing instead on beyond-visual-range strikes. Battlefields still using older tactics haven't possessed much heavy firepower, so such dense firepower is rare on modern battlefields. When Captain Rogers saw the machine gun trajectories, like a bright necklace in the night sky, he felt as if he had traveled back in time, witnessing an anti-aircraft barrage, the smoke, sea vapor, and the scorching metallic smell filling the air.
"But that doesn't explain everything!" he shouted at Falcon. "The pilot of Shield One crashed the plane into the sea!"
"Our situation is pretty much the same, Captain." Vision put down the Quinjet and began assisting Captain Rogers with the relocation. "As we approached the target location, I sensed a wave of chaos, hatred, and hunger spreading rampantly. The field was so powerful that it could affect ordinary humans. I discovered that my gem could neutralize some of the energy, and I also regained control of the flight system, moving away from that terrifying thing, but it wasn't enough..."
"Vision protected us all!" Falcon shouted. "Aside from a few agents with broken necks and ribs who may need treatment, there weren't any major casualties."
