Chapter 708 An Uncontrollable Grand Scene
Chapter 708 An Uncontrollable Scene (Second Update)
Catherine paced back and forth, looking annoyed, until Stephanie told her to stop.
The room they were in had no carpet, and the sound of Catherine's high heels clicking on the wooden floor interfered with her phone call. Catherine stomped her feet a few times before stopping, in response to Stephanie's demand. "My job is to protect you, but I don't have a sword!" the female swordsman complained, tugging at her well-tailored women's suit. "And I can't carry a gun in this, damn the FBI! Damn the Secret Service! I should be standing beside the monarch guarding him, not making a child who's just had surgery and is still developing do that!"
“If things change, you’ll get what you want. But not now. You just need to know we’re safe in this room.” Stephanie didn’t look up, continuing to use her cell phone instead of the landline in her father’s office. Gideon Malik was currently working in the Oval Office. Through the operations of Immortal City, Gideon held the position of U.S. Secretary of State, and in return, he used this position to assist Immortal City’s operations. For example, he transferred Victoria Hand’s intelligence unit to the State Department’s Black Ops team to cover their tracks, and so on.
"And you know how much the monarch values genetically modified warriors; that child was created by the monarch himself."
"I was also made by the monarch himself!" Catherine retorted angrily. "Why should only that boy be allowed to stay by the monarch's side!"
Stephanie repeatedly checked for surveillance and eavesdropping devices before entering the office; she didn't want her upcoming conversation to fall into the ears of US intelligence. The airstrike on Pym Technology's "cold storage" was about to begin, and as the head of Immortal City's administration, she needed to assist Agent Hand, helping Immortal City's intelligence department launch espionage and obtain intelligence from the White House—the contingency plan included a scenario where intelligence was exposed and war broke out with the United States. This part of the plan was a standing contingency plan, and Stephanie had arranged numerous drills. Now, Immortal City's war machine was ready, ensuring that if the situation deteriorated to the point where action was necessary, Immortal City would have the capability to strike first.
"Our informants are in high positions now, and if things really get bad, those people will tell us."
"I hope so," Catherine said through gritted teeth. She cornered the Malik family assistant with her gaze, seemingly weighing the loyalty of the girl who looked like a recent college freshman, and whether she should rip her head off and hide the body in the ventilation duct. Stephanie sighed, stopping Catherine from continuing to frighten the hostage sent by the lower-ranking family.
"My lord has entrusted me with the task of finding out the White House's attitude toward this matter, and you have been entrusted with the task of protecting my safety and taking me out when necessary, without causing any further trouble. Your chainsaw sword is stored in the hidden compartment under this desk in the floor; I trust you can retrieve it."
"You should have told me this sooner!" Catherine rushed over excitedly, trying to overturn the desk.
“We’ve only been in this room for ten minutes, and I’m busy completing the task my lord gave me!” Stephanie glared at her, then beckoned the girl over to help. Pointing to the telephone on the desk, she said to the young Hydra girl, “If General Hale has anything to say, she’ll use this phone. But if she doesn’t mention anything important when you answer, don’t say anything. Be smart, don’t mess things up. Your family sending you here wasn’t a good thing. Catherine, put down the chainsaw sword, and come with me. We’re going to the Iinhowir administration building to see someone.”
"What happened?"
“There’s a dog trying to break free of its chain.” Stephanie put one hand on her hip and waved the file folder in her other hand. “Next, we’ll use a softer approach. I’m better at this than you are. I don’t know if you’ve heard the story of the elephant tethered by a thin chain. This is a senator’s thin chain. When we show him this, he becomes obedient and stops trying to break free of the collar we give him.”
"Is anyone going to get beaten up?"
"I assure you that this won't happen," Stephanie blinked, "but I believe no senator would want a photo of themselves running naked through government buildings to appear on social media."
"So are you really confident you can pull this off? Will I hear air raid sirens on the news?" Hope asked nervously. Scott Lang had to put down his binoculars and listen to what Salomon had to say. Faced with skepticism, the sorcerer simply shrugged dismissively.
"It's just a low-yield nuclear bomb, and a bunker buster at that. I guarantee every inch of Pym Technologies will be turned upside down," he said. "But you, Ms. Dane, can you be sure there's no one at Pym Technologies tonight?"
"Ever since my father threw a WWII tank into the square, it's been a piece of cake to ask employees to relocate their offices," Hope said irritably. "And I even invited the police officers in charge of cordoning off the area to lunch at the restaurant. Now there's nobody at Pym Tech, not even the cleaning staff."
"Didn't you give them a day off?" the sorcerer asked, somewhat surprised. "Do you still expect them to work for you?"
"A terrorist attack happening during a holiday, with no casualties, sounds suspicious," Scott Lang chimed in. "Just like my alibi, it doesn't hold up to scrutiny. I'm worried the police will want to go back to the scene when you plan to launch the airstrike."
"Soon." The arcane mage glanced at his watch. "My Sky Carrier is nearby and has activated stealth, so it won't be detected by radar. The squadron dropping the bunker-buster bombs will return immediately after completing its mission, completely disappearing from Rayfa's sight."
"This plan sounds good, but thinking back on it..."
"Yes, there might be a small earthquake. After all, it's a small hydrogen bomb, and we can't control the fusion reaction. That's why I told you to prepare sunglasses instead of those stupid binoculars, and not to stay on the rooftops... keep your heads down!"
Scott Lang and Hope did as instructed, completely bewildered, but they saw no sign of a missile launch and heard no explosion. They only saw Salomon still standing there, slowly removing his brass knuckles.
"What are you doing..." Scott Lang asked angrily. But he quickly shut up because he heard a buzzing sound approaching rapidly from afar.
Immediately afterward, a violent jolt threw him and Hope to the ground. Even without directly witnessing the explosion, a blinding flash of light had already covered the entire sky, and the ensuing sonic boom nearly made him vomit. Similarly, Hope also showed signs of concussion, collapsing to the ground and vomiting. Scott Lang helped Hope up, and as he looked up at Salomon, he saw a massive white shockwave continuously bombarding the air in front of them—a scene unfolding in places he couldn't see, at the very epicenter of the explosion.
No one knows what price Salomon paid.
Hope slowly got to her feet only after the tremors subsided. Dust billowed high into the sky, almost blocking out the sun, and glass within miles was shattered by the shockwave. Hope stared in disbelief at the scene before her, and Scott Lang was equally stunned.
"This is... the end of the world..." she whispered.
"Yes, I found that one bunker buster bomb would suffice, so I halted the other bombing missions." The sorcerer nodded solemnly. "I had the intelligence department falsely report that a terrorist carrying a bomb had arrived nearby, and requested the police to evacuate nearby residents. But now it seems that a suicide terrorist attack simply cannot explain this scene."
"What about casualties?" Hope asked hastily. She didn't need to look to know what had become of the place that used to be the Pym Technologies headquarters; a truck bomb couldn't turn the ground into glass.
"My magic can't protect people who keep staring at the explosion site; their eyes might get burned by the intense light. Other than that, there shouldn't be any major problems."
