Chapter 829 Trans-Era Communication
Chapter 829 A Trans-Era Exchange (First Update)
Bayonetta stood there and waited for a while.
As expected, a moment later, the golden figure piercing through the four angels, accompanied by the roar of engines and billowing steam, surged up from below the cliff, effortlessly destroying the angels' small, living battleships, each several meters long. The witches of the past, temporarily setting aside the attack on their stronghold, watched with interest as their daughter adjusted her expression to welcome her lover. However, Bayonetta was met not only by the sorcerer, but also by a large group of witches following closely behind. They hurriedly followed the comet trail left by the sorcerer, but when they saw the witches beside Bayonetta, they slowed their pace, seemingly hesitant to approach and greet them.
Apart from a few younger witches who would greet him loudly and carefree (like the one who asked Salomon to take off his helmet), the other witches who knew about the taboos of the past were skeptical.
"Should I praise your charm, darling? You've managed to attract so many women in such a short time!" Bayonetta said irritably, hands on her hips, pushing up her glasses with the muzzle of her gun. Even as a heavily armored arcane mage descended from the sky and landed in front of her, she maintained her chin held high, an air of arrogance. "Shouldn't you explain what your relationship with your companions is all about?"
"I only encountered them on my way to kill my target. They promised to take me to the battlefield, and I think the target should be there." Salomon didn't elaborate, because there were other people present. He turned his head and saw two pairs of identical gray eyes. "This lady is... hiss..." He looked at Bayonetta and received a slight nod in response. This made Salomon tense up immediately. He looked around, fearing he might encounter Bayonetta and Joan of Arc from this era.
"Good evening, boy," the witch of the past greeted with a smile. She issued orders to the group of witches who had come to track Salomon, instructing them to consolidate their defenses and concentrate their forces in the tower, and giving a series of commands, such as activating the witches' clan's treasured war machines. Although many witches were dissatisfied, they agreed to the order; after all, in the face of this matter of life and death for their race, personal feelings could be set aside.
"Rosa, this is the last time you'll order me around." The leading witch turned and walked away, seemingly harboring some past grudge against this witch named Rosa. She glared fiercely at the mystic who had removed his helmet as she passed, then received a vague, slightly apologetic smile in return. Only after the group of witches had finally disappeared from sight did Salomon turn his attention to the witch named Rosa beside Bayonetta, rather than the smashed marble fountain. Faced with this witch's scrutiny, even Salomon was too embarrassed to move, momentarily at a loss for words.
He frantically sent cryptic messages to Bayonetta, intending to discuss their confessions with her so that her mother wouldn't know their true purpose was to kill the sage Baldr and then stand against them. However, Rosa smiled understandingly and didn't ask Bayonetta and Salomon any questions. Instead, she stepped aside to give them time to talk.
"Where is the boy?" Bayonetta asked.
Salomon shook his head and said in a very worried tone, "I'm not sure if he was transported to this era."
Both she and Salomon had a general idea of the boy's identity.
Legend has it that the Eye of the World was a gift from the immortal Chaos God Asar, who, after observing the world from the Holy Mountain, for reasons unknown (Salomon's malicious speculation is inappropriate here), divided his power in two, bestowing one upon the Sage race and the other upon the Witch race. The purpose was to enable these two races to help humanity gain free will and break free from the historical bondage imposed by the gods, while also granting them the mission of monitoring the upper and lower planes of existence. Such an immortal being could not have died so easily; therefore, Salomon believes the boy's identity suggests he was originally the holder of the Eye of the World, a part of the Chaos God Asar.
This is why the two Eyes of the World unleashed their true power when they reunited with their original owners, sending the Sage and the Witch to this era, to their base on Sun Island. This is the true purpose of the Eyes of the World: to send their holders to the past to alter history. Although this would trigger a series of terrifying multiverse upheavals and complex timeline disruptions, such as the "birth of parallel universes," any cost is acceptable when faced with a life-or-death crisis for the race.
Given the opposite mark on the prophet's forehead to that of the boy, and combined with the vague legends, it is quite easy to deduce that the so-called prophet is actually another part of the chaotic god Aesir, and that he and the boy are in a binary opposition. Perhaps it is because of this relationship that phrases like "becoming one" appear in the boy's memories.
The problem is, no one knows why the boy lost his memory or why he appeared in the future in that form. Salomon can only speculate that it might be related to the imbalance of power in the Eye of the World after Bald's death, but this doesn't explain why Bald in this era would choose to side with the Prophet and hunt down the boy; this motivation remains shrouded in mystery.
Until Bayonetta told him about the scene she observed with the Eye of the World while traveling through time. It was the scene of the sage Bald standing before Rosa, questioning someone. However, this scene had no cause or effect, leaving everyone baffled.
"We've gotten ourselves into a huge mess, a mess we have to deal with." Salomon gently patted Bayonetta's shoulder, his expression hesitant. They both knew the outcome of this defensive battle, but the biggest question was whether Bayonetta, now in this era, could accept that outcome again—Bayonetta had dreamt of that scenario more than once in her dreams, revealing an unusual vulnerability. She had a choice, because she was the holder of the Eye of the World. If she wanted to change the past and save her mother, even her partner Salomon couldn't object, unless he stood on Kamar-Taj's side and stopped it. The witch seemed to sense Salomon's worry; she grasped the sorcerer's fingers and patted his hand reassuringly, making Salomon appear to be the one in the predicament.
"It's alright," she said with a smile, raindrops dripping intermittently from her hair, her tone betraying her disappointment. Salomon couldn't help but lean down and kiss this woman with unimaginable resilience. Salomon told Bayonetta how he had arrived in this time—the matter of the Silver Key needed to be handled with care, but why the Eye of the World resonated with the Silver Key was something he couldn't understand at this moment. He also showed Bayonetta the spell the Venerable had placed upon him; perhaps it was this magic from the Eye of Agamotto that had been protecting him, preventing him from perishing during his time travel.
"Alright, young people." After a while, Rosa clapped her hands, drawing the attention of the sorcerer and Bayonetta. She winked at Bayonetta, indicating her approval of her daughter's gaze. Bayonetta blushed involuntarily, which puzzled the sorcerer, as he had no idea what Bayonetta and his mother had discussed that led Rosa to look at him so strangely. Bayonetta couldn't possibly have told him about her plan to raise and discipline Salomon from childhood the moment she saw him. Although she had now accomplished her little scheme, it was still too shameful to reveal it. The strong-willed witch would rather die than utter such an embarrassing secret.
"Now is not the time for romance, we still have things to do!"
