Chapter 836 The Culprit

Chapter 836 The Culprit (Second Update)

The ghostly arm, invisible to ordinary people, stretched out and precisely grabbed a meteorite outside the atmosphere.

The ghostly arm ruthlessly ripped it down, forcibly altering the trajectory of this asteroid-sized meteorite, tens of meters long, like tearing fruit from a tree and hurling it down. Like a star falling from the sky, it illuminated the entire heavens, as dazzling as a falling sun. Whether witches, sages, or angels in the midst of battle, or mobs busy taking advantage of the chaos or bullying the weaker, everyone involuntarily looked up, gazing at the meteorite that thunderously tore through the air.

Without hesitation, Bayonetta jumped up from the nearly burned rock where she was standing.

She flapped the dark purple wings on her back and soared into the sky, like a black arrow flying towards a meteorite.

Her jet-black hair danced like a living thing on her body, then twisted into a black portal. Immediately afterward, a smiling Madame Butterfly emerged halfway through the portal. The female demon's massive frame appeared somewhat small before the burning meteorite, but Madame Butterfly seemed unconcerned about this difference—she clenched her fists, leaned back, her entire body tense like a spring compressed to its limit. The meteorite drew closer and closer, so close that people on the ground had to close their eyes and turn their heads to avoid burning their retinas; so close that night ended prematurely, all the filth brought by the darkness beginning to evaporate with the rising temperature; so close that the opaque was pierced by light, and withered branches and fallen leaves involuntarily began to burn. Only then did Madame Butterfly move.

She leaned forward abruptly and slammed her forehead hard against the burning meteorite.

The shockwave from the collision even destroyed brick houses near the cliff. Heavy bricks flew about like weightless cotton wool in the explosion, only revealing their true force when they struck someone's head or ribs. At the same time, the massive meteorite suddenly shattered into dozens of smaller boulders. These burning stones, like those hurled by a catapult, flew across several mountain peaks, crashing down on the houses below the cliff, turning the area into a sea of fire.

Salomon gazed into the distance, trying to see where the heaviest lead ball on Earth would land. Of course, his focus wasn't on the meteorite, but on Bayonetta, who had been thrown into the air by the explosion. Even before the meteorite arrived, he had already cast his most proficient protective spells to shield Bayonetta from the flames—a golden-red shield blocked the first wave of fire and sound, and the still-present Lady Butterfly had used her hand to protect Bayonetta, absorbing most of the terrifying shockwave capable of killing a witch. Lady Butterfly had clearly noticed what Salomon was doing; she showed him the nearly unconscious witch in her arms, essentially meaning that she would protect Bayonetta.

After that, she disappeared with Bayonetta.

"I simply cannot comprehend that you would fall for a woman like this in the future." The Venerable One looked at his disciple with pity. "I suppose you wouldn't normally beat your wife? Didn't I try to persuade you in the future?"

"Actually, you're quite supportive of me..."

"Perhaps it's because I know about this now," the Venerable One sighed.

Bayonetta's battle with the Prophet had temporarily ended. Salomon circled the cliff several times, but no matter how he looked, he couldn't find the Prophet; clearly, the guy had hidden himself. Logically, the Prophet shouldn't be too far from the scene, yet even Salomon's [True Knowledge] [Note 1] couldn't detect him—until the Venerable activated the power of the Time Stone within the Eye of Agamotto. A shimmering green light rippled through the air, revealing the figure of the hooded, vest-clad boy. This was a past image; the Time Stone was recreating what had happened here. The image cycled repeatedly, intermittently, allowing Salomon to determine the Prophet's direction.

"He concealed himself within the flow of time," the Sorcerer Supreme explained. "To be precise, he concealed himself 'one second later,' so that when light enters our eyes, we can only see the light 'one second ago.' It's a rather sophisticated magic, unlike his simple and brutal attack methods. However, possessing such power allows one to do much more than simply hide oneself." A professional's commentary is often incisive. The Sorcerer Supreme expressed disdain for the magical skills of one-half of the Chaos God Asar's soul, and the crude use of the power of time was an act despised by experts.

As Bayonetta gradually regained consciousness, Lady Butterfly had already returned to her original plane due to the approaching summoning time. However, she still remembered Lady Butterfly's protection and the fleeting multiple golden-red shields that had enveloped her. She was familiar with this kind of magic, and the witch smiled knowingly. She knew that Salomon had been watching her, but had avoided showing himself to minimize spacetime disturbances.

She stretched and slowly looked around.

"here it is……"

This was a long-abandoned, broken bridge, with many ancient stone carvings standing on both sides, and the ground covered with Enochian runes. A thick fog shrouded the area beneath the bridge, its surface winding towards the mist-shrouded rocky peaks. A sudden sense of familiarity and foreboding gripped her heart; she was certain she had been here before.

She had come here before to resolve the issues surrounding the Lagra Order on Sun Island and the resurrection of the chief god Jubilee. This place was once the altar of the witch clan. Although Bayonetta didn't know why Madame Butterfly had placed her here, Madame Butterfly wasn't affected by time travel and could clearly remember what was about to happen. Therefore, Madame Butterfly's actions must have a purpose—Bayonetta trusted Madame Butterfly deeply. Although Salomon disagreed with this approach and even harbored some hostility towards Madame Butterfly, who would take Bayonetta's soul, this did not affect the trust between Bayonetta and Madame Butterfly.

As a consort of demonic contractors, Madame Butterfly was her best friend besides Joan of Arc.

Bayonetta soon understood Madame Butterfly's intentions.

Just as she was about to enter a familiar passage, a figure in a white robe, wielding a golden spear, thrust straight in from her side. Bayonetta glanced at Baldr, a realization dawning on her—this was the place that had haunted her dreams for years, the scene she had repeatedly dreamt of even after losing her memory. She knew what this altar looked like, and she knew what was about to happen. Clutching a sliver of hope amidst immense despair, Bayonetta ran into the passage without looking back, making no attempt to attack Baldr.

The sage Baldr seemed to have no time to attack her, and the two of them rushed together towards the large door at the end of the passage. Baldr kicked the door open with all his might, and the sight before him instantly consumed his mind with rage.

He saw a boy standing in the middle of the room, holding a blood-stained card, while his lover Rosa lay on the ground, her life hanging in the balance. Baldr immediately drew his spear and slashed, but the boy seemed unfazed, dodging the blow and then disappearing into thin air with a giggle. The sage, disregarding his pursuit of his enemy, quickly lay down and gently cradled his lover in his arms. Yet, he felt only coldness. Conversely, Baldr's heart was filled with a burning rage, his veins throbbing with intense anger, his heart pounding as if it would explode.

"Did you see the emblem on his forehead?" Bayonetta asked expressionlessly. "That's your true enemy!"

"What?"

"Are you so foolish as to forget the crest on that self-proclaimed prophet's head?" Bayonetta rebuked the sage without hesitation. Baldr didn't respond, but sat there watching his lover's lifeless face. Bayonetta looked up at the altar; the pale white light of the full moon streamed through the circular skylight, gently caressing Rosa's corpse. However, the moonlight's amplification of the witches' power couldn't prevent her death.

Bayonetta gazed longingly at her mother's body. Even as this scene replayed before her eyes, she remained calm. The past was predetermined, but that didn't mean the future was unchangeable; the amplification of moonlight still allowed her to do certain things. She couldn't afford to vent her anger on her own father, who had caused the destruction of the witch race and her mother's death. "We must go back to the future to end all of this. Here, I can open the Eye of the World," she said. "If you want to kill your enemies, then come with me!"
