Chapter 840 Living Towards Death
Chapter 840 Living Towards Death (Second Update)
Constantine must face the strongest enemy yet, leaving him with neither the time nor the energy to care for the escort team behind him.
The assault transport ship originally tasked with carrying this team, after unleashing its missiles at the higher angels, pursued them along the wreckage of the Bridge to Heaven. It then mounted a heavy machine gun on its nose to provide fire support for the Sorority and special forces. This allowed Constantine to focus his energy on engaging the enemy—a battle beyond the reach of ordinary mortals—without the need for ancient cavalry to repeatedly infiltrate enemy lines. As a member of the Royal Guard, he had to face these formidable foe capable of easily killing everyone present except himself. The boy was no ordinary man; others couldn't see the Royal Guard's fighting prowess clearly, but he could. He saw a blurry golden halo appear behind the Royal Guard's powered armor, a divine radiance enveloping his soul.
The crimson and gold light on the horizon painted the pointed altar and snow-capped peaks of Mount Finnbowent with a nauseating mix of colors. It was rare in itself for two different planes to join forces in an attempt to achieve the same goal.
Unable to bear the thought of others sacrificing themselves for him, the boy, despite his headache, took out his card and unleashed his power to fight the enemy. Tatiana glanced at him, then silently made way for him, allowing her to fire.
The sorority doesn't care whether boys' strength is effective or not, but they respect those who rise up in resistance. After the ladies of the Immortal City rescued them from brothels and human traffickers' cellars, only the most rebellious girls could pass the test to join the sorority, forging them from raw iron into steel. Three assault transport boats circled overhead, hunting down large targets; every step forward on this last stretch came at a bloody cost, the barrels of the heavy bomb machine gun turrets glowing red-hot from the continuous firing.
Orange-red sparks flashed in the sky again as several more assault transport ships burst out of the portal.
Bayonetta and Baldr jumped from one of the assault transport ships, the witch and sage joining the battle without hesitation. Baldr fought the demons of the lower planes, while Bayonetta fought the angels of the upper planes. Meanwhile, assault transport ships bursting from the portal joined the fray, raining bullets on high-value targets on the Bridge to Heaven. The pressure on the sorority and special forces eased instantly; they quickly escorted the boy towards Constantine—the Royal Guard had been waiting there for several seconds, using that time to kill a high-ranking cherubim. Bayonetta and Baldr followed, crashing into the mountaintop, which was surrounded by protective magic, alongside the rest of the group.
This is the passageway from the Bridge to the mountaintop, where they encountered no enemies. Ancient stone carvings and sculptures tell the story of this altar's long history and function. Logically, this place should have collapsed due to changes in the mountain's structure, but even the two bunker busters failed to damage it, at most causing some steps to tilt. Clearly, some external force is working to maintain the integrity of this place.
The siege artillery from the town of Noah'dun continued its relentless bombardment, the deep rumble like distant thunder clearly audible to everyone inside the tunnel. Before entering the tunnel, they had clearly seen the countless flying creatures in the sky being pulverized in droves by the intense artillery fire, but everyone knew that this offensive wouldn't last long, and the density of the siege artillery fire gradually decreased.
Once the ammunition transport vehicles run out of shells, the extradimensional creatures will swarm downwards. Bayonetta had already reviewed the intelligence on the position on her way here; she knew that the anti-aircraft artillery couldn't completely stop the angels and demons.
"Little one." Bayonetta nodded to the boy to avoid a conditioned reflex upon seeing the Sage. She didn't waste any time, immediately asking Constantine, "Where is he?"
"I have no right to reveal my lord's information, not even yours," Constantine replied rather rigidly. "The monarch can only guarantee that he will arrive."
"Very well, don't waste time." Baldr's expression was anything but pleasant. He knew what was at the top of the mountain; it was where he had landed during his first time travel. He glanced at the boy, then turned and rushed towards the massive stone door at the end of the tunnel. Bayonetta simply told Constantine and the suicide squad to follow quickly, then ran after Baldr.
The prophet was already there, waiting for them.
The sage and witch, having just stepped out of the stone gate, were immediately attacked by the extradimensional creatures that had been waiting for them. Constantine stood at the forefront of the suicide squad, fighting his way through the dense ranks of extradimensional beings, while the Sisterhood and special forces responded with a barrage of bullets. Every inch of the land was teeming with extradimensional creatures; monsters of vastly different sizes were packed tightly together, and weapons and limbs of all shapes and sizes were hurled at them. At the same time, the assault transport ships were also breaking through the extradimensional creatures surrounding the mountaintop, unable to provide any support. They were like fish stuck in quagmire, their progress slowing down more and more until they came to a complete stop, unable to advance any further, only able to watch the corpses pile up higher and higher beneath their feet.
"What do you want to do now?" Constantine asked the boy urgently through the communication channel. "Tell me quickly! We don't have time!"
"I……"
"Welcome, my other half, my brother," the prophet said slowly. He paid no heed to the blood shed for him by angels and demons, nor to whether the deafening gunfire drowned out his voice. "We were once one, but you, this 'half'... he wanted to awaken humanity's goodness, so he split our power in two. We were supposed to be mirror images, but this 'half'... he sacrificed his divine power, the power of the monarch, to maintain the balance of this world, the power to control the Eye of the World. Unfortunately, this half made a grave mistake... he didn't foresee that humanity's malice would grow stronger as humanity prospered. Although I cannot use the monarch's power to control the Eye of the World, I have used humanity's malice to reclaim the power of the ancient gods... the Undying Witch, the power of the Left Eye of Darkness, the power of the Lumen Sage, the power of the Right Eye of Light. Now I will reclaim the only power I lack, the power of the monarch, this half of power."
Although the prophet's speech was incoherent, it didn't prevent everyone present from understanding his thoughts. Surrounded by extradimensional beings, he slowly approached the sage, the witch, and the boy surrounded by the suicide squad. He only cared about the sage, the witch, and the royal guard, because they were the few people present who could pose any threat to him. He disregarded everyone else, whether it was the sorority or the special forces team. God doesn't care about ants, and neither does he—until a high-energy plasma blast struck his face. The prophet's expression visibly changed, from initial calm to disbelief, and finally to rage and humiliation.
"How dare you..."
"I've never seen such an arrogant guy." A young man in the special forces team let out a trembling laugh, for he was the one who fired the high-energy plasma. While the other ordinary people were stiff and weak-kneed by the terrifying aura emanating from the Prophet, he fired the first shot of resistance. Even Baldr cast an incredulous look at this special forces soldier.
"There are still people calling themselves gods these days? Don't you know that humans have defeated gods?" the young man said dejectedly. "These days, guys who claim to be gods are either on drugs or born idiots. Which one are you? Anyway, you're just going to die. I've done enough wrong things in Afghanistan; I should have died long ago!"
"Well done, Andrew," the Prophet said menacingly, uttering the special forces soldier's real name. "You'll be the first."
"Well done, Andrew." These words, spoken by someone else, carried a completely different meaning, and the young special forces soldier felt a strange sense of encouragement. Out of the corner of his eye, the soldier caught a glimpse of a warm golden light; his blood, frozen with fear, began to flow again, and an impulse made him unable to resist turning towards that light.
"Brave soldier, you have fulfilled your duty. Now leave the rest to me."
