Chapter 997 The Selfish Gene

Chapter 997 The Selfish Gene (First Update)

When organisms began to adapt their genes to environmental changes through sexual reproduction, many intelligent species developed different divisions of labor. Females were responsible for creating resources and ensuring the continuation of the species, while males were responsible for resources and maintaining the safety of the species. The most obvious example is the lion pride. Lionesses hunt animals to feed the pride, while male lions, who are not related to the lionesses, guard the territory and care for the cubs. When intruders attempt to invade the territory, the stronger male lions will drive them away, risking their lives to protect the pride and their offspring. The development of matriarchal societies in human civilization followed the model of lion prides, and this division of gender continues even in patriarchal societies.

However, with the development of productive forces, which were no longer limited to individual strength, the ideas of liberating productive forces and gender equality began to spread, allowing women to truly unleash their own power. Salomon believed this ideology was highly beneficial to the productivity and technological development of the human species, hence the constant calls for women's liberation in *The Unity of Truth*. On a daily basis, preachers tirelessly explained the rights that Latvian women should possess and urged them to face the responsibilities they bore.

They encourage women not to see themselves as weak or victims, begging for pity, or ignoring their responsibilities and only thinking about enjoying rights, but to see their own strength and wisdom. Rights and obligations are inseparable twins. Latvian women must stand up and fight alongside all Latvian men to strive for a better future. Lazy people who only want to reap the benefits should be despised. In early educational research, the Ministry of the Immortal City realized that this idea was quite easy for Latvians to accept because a large part of the Latvian ethnic composition consists of settled Roma (Gypsies) who have assimilated with the local population (settled Roma are called Sintes). Although their culture has changed, the genes of a matriarchal society have remained in this ethnic group for many years, and women have always been shrouded in mystery in this culture.

Even though Salomon knew that for a species, the role of females was to create means of production and reproduce, a directive that went against the fundamental nature of genetic perpetuation, he still hoped to make the best use of resources and talents. Under strict limitations on artificial intelligence, the existence of the Immortal City's servants best embodies the concept of "Unified Truth."

At dawn, as Sofia rose, washed, donned her uniform and insignia, and stepped out of her military tent through the cold mist rising from the forest, she was met by a large group of young women dressed as peasant women. The young girls, who had been whispering amongst themselves, immediately fell silent upon seeing her, forming a less-than-perfect line according to the basic military knowledge taught by their instructor. Outside the military control zone stood many young women—too young, too old, and hesitant—who nervously peered towards Sofia's tent, whispering amongst themselves.

A messenger in bulletproof armor trotted over and, after receiving permission, approached Sofia, whispering Viktor von Doom's instructions and the current situation in the residential area. Sofia nodded expressionlessly, adjusted her peaked cap, tugged at the cuffs of her long black trench coat, and strode towards the young girls—the messenger lagging behind hadn't heard what she said to them, but a few minutes later he saw their faces flushed with excitement, especially after she showed them her chainsaw. However, some girls turned pale, their expressions hesitant; the messenger narrowed his eyes and gripped his rifle tightly.

Sophia took everyone's reactions to heart. She had already reviewed the files and could associate their appearances with their names. She had mentally assessed them using standards set by the head of the Immortal City's intelligence department, standards that all military discipline officers were required to study. As she led this group of young women, each with their own thoughts, through the military control zone checkpoint, most of the women outside immediately raised their hands and cheered. Some middle-aged and elderly women, along with their descendants, waved their own embroidered crimson banners with laurel wreaths and eagle emblems—some even tried to produce three Major Arcana Tarot cards, but were stopped by the preachers mingling in the crowd. Superstitious activities were strictly forbidden in the camp; that was an ironclad rule.

Although the flag was very simple, it represented, to some extent, the effectiveness of the education in the Immortal City.

Viktor von Doom stood at a distance, coldly watching Sophia lead the girl onto the armored personnel carrier heading to the closed training camp. Not all of these volunteer women would pass the tests to become soldiers; some might become field medics, accountants, or other valuable positions. Even so, the civilian personnel of the Immortal City all possessed a strong military attribute; even medics or accountants had to carry firearms and melee weapons, and possess the courage to kill the enemy and themselves when necessary.

He was actually quite curious to see how many of these people could persevere. He knew Salomon's plan was somewhat idealistic; not everyone could embody the absolute rationality of the Immortal City, see the future envisioned by its monarch, or adhere to the beliefs in the "Unified Truth." On the battlefield, many who initially appeared remarkably strong made different choices when faced with the terrifying prospect of death, betraying the commissar's teachings.

Victor von Doom quickly dismissed the thought, turned, lifted the curtain, and re-entered the command tent. The aroma of coffee, tobacco, and parchment filled his lungs, which had been cleansed by the fresh forest air. He hadn't slept for several nights, working intensely every night. Sophia's proposal yesterday to use servitude on a large scale had already given him a headache. After all, it's hard to accept treating people as objects without a steely heart. Especially the Western liberals; if they saw servitude, they might even support the death penalty again. Victor believed that such a bad reputation wouldn't help Latvinia's future—but when the whole world was in turmoil, such things wouldn't matter. At that time, the entire human world would struggle to withstand the alien fleet entering the solar system; only the Immortal City would have a fighting chance.

Those are the true enemies of the Immortal City; Salomon has never considered other human nations as true adversaries.

As the scheduled start date of the war approaches, the Latvian army has begun probing attacks and training exercises against smaller landowners, while simultaneously stockpiling strategic resources and constructing bases. This battle may not only erupt in Latvia. If NATO and the US forcibly attack Latvia under the guise of "humanitarian intervention," then the armies of Western financial magnates will encounter the monarch of the Immortal City guarding the north, and the Immortal City itself. At that time, as a counterattack by the Immortal City, the flames of war could very well spread throughout Europe, and even the entire world, potentially raging under the ideals of the monarch of the Immortal City.

This outcome was inevitable; the Ministry of the Interior had already prepared for the worst-case scenario.

Only fire can reforge steel, burning away weakness and compromise to forge a sword that can be wielded against the galaxy. The technological level of the Immortal City, facing the increasingly weakened military power of Europe, is tantamount to a high-dimensional attack; even without the aid of an army, Salomon alone could wage the entire war. If it weren't for the Immortal City's monarch believing that many of its technologies needed to be put into practical use, and if the Latvian mindset hadn't needed to be disseminated, many industrial facilities would have needed to be seized non-violently. This undertaking cannot be accomplished solely through force; perhaps Viktor von Dum would already be sitting in the White House signing a declaration on his behalf.

Regardless of what the future holds, the world will soon know that Latvian has a group of warriors with ideals.
