The First Military God of the Border

Chapter 74 Discovering the Bandits' Secret

White Tiger Mountain.

The bandit stronghold was located forty miles away from Sigou Village.

Like Cangying Ridge, it is a mountain stronghold built on a dangerous spot on the mountaintop.

Further north from Baihu Mountain lies Ningyuan Town.

This bandit was a good horseman; he was very fast once he got on his horse.

Lin Hui chased after him, firing arrows every now and then, but he was too fast. The arrows grazed the bandit's neck, scaring him so much that he didn't even have the courage to turn around.

All he could do was frantically whip his horse, trying to escape as quickly as possible.

The clatter of horses' hooves echoed through the valley.

"Damn it, this kid is so difficult to deal with. This is the first time I've ever met such a skilled hunter."

The bandit was cursing and swearing, his mind in turmoil. His companion's body was still warm, and he was afraid of dying.

Actually, they came down the mountain after receiving news that there were two stunningly beautiful women in Sigou Village, so they wanted to kidnap them and take them back up the mountain, and also take all the money from that family.

But I never expected to encounter such a master.

He was an expert archer, always hitting the bullseye, and possessed superb martial arts skills.

His eldest brother died, and all the other brothers who came were dead. He was the only one who managed to escape, but he was relentlessly pursued.

He was terrified that he might be shot through the heart by Lin Hui, who was relentlessly pursuing him.

This is really weird. The intelligence said he was just a hunter, but how come a hunter is more powerful than the border troops?

As he waved his whip, he glanced back. What he saw nearly scared him to death: the rider behind him was aiming his bow. He quickly dodged.

He was almost killed by an arrow.

"What a damn bad luck."

After cursing under his breath, he dared not take the main road and rode his horse directly into the woods.

He was familiar with the forest. Once he entered the forest, no matter how powerful the people behind him were, they wouldn't be able to kill him so easily.

Once he reaches the local guide at White Tiger Mountain, he can turn the tables and kill the people behind him.

He had been in Baihu Mountain for many years. He knew exactly which gully could hide people and which place could be used for ambushes. He could find them even with his eyes closed.

After about the time it takes for an incense stick to burn, the sound of horses' hooves behind them gradually faded away.

This relieved him, and he pulled on the reins and looked back.

But it was very quiet all around, so quiet that only the sound of the wind could be heard, and there was no sign of anyone.

He breathed a long sigh of relief, his face beaming with the joy of surviving a close call.

"Just you wait, I'll go back and tell the chief to bring the brothers down the mountain and kill you."

After cursing and swearing, he continued walking forward, but he changed direction after walking a short distance.

The horses' hooves rustled as they trod on the snow.

However, he did not notice that not far behind him, deep in the bushes, a man on horseback was slowly emerging from behind the bushes.

Lin Hui watched the bandits disappear into the distance, but he did not call for them to chase after them.

If he had wanted to, he would have killed the bandits with his first arrow after catching up.

Lin Hui deliberately missed several arrows. Killing one bandit was easy, but leaving the entire bandit hideout as a threat was not the result he wanted.

Because everyone in the bandit's den knew where the bandits had gone, and if they killed everyone, they would know it was him who did it.

Instead of waiting for the bandits to come to our door, we should first find out where they are.

The reason Lin Hui didn't kill him directly was to have him lead the way.

He waited a while, until the bandits were far away, before leisurely following them.

The bandits ahead thought they had lost Lin Hui, so they acted with impunity. Little did they know that their actions inadvertently provided Lin Hui with the location.

After about the time it takes to drink a cup of tea, Lin Hui followed the trail left by the bandits to a ravine.

Upon seeing the terrain, Lin Hui immediately abandoned his horse, tied it between several large trees, and then crouched down to enter the ravine.

The terrain of this ravine is very complex. After walking to the end, a valley appears, sandwiched between two mountains, giving a sense of a narrow passage, the kind of place where one man can hold the pass against ten thousand.

He wasn't in a hurry, because he couldn't see anything from here.

So I climbed up a vine to a protrusion on either side of the cliff and looked down.

Sure enough, the view from here was expansive, allowing a clear view of the entire scene inside.

Behind the canyon lay a vast, open valley floor, where the mountain stronghold was situated.

The stronghold was surrounded by logs that formed a wall. Every three meters or so, a tower was built from logs, and archers guarded the top of the tower.

On either side of the main gate stand two three-story towers, with archers positioned directly facing the valley entrance, guarding the canyon entrance tightly.

The gate of the mountain stronghold was made of logs. Huge logs were hollowed out and connected with wooden sticks to form a heavy gate.

Lin Hui could see clearly that the gate of the stronghold was open and the bandits were pushing horse-drawn carts inside.

There was another person standing at the entrance of the stronghold, but his attire was very different from that of the bandits, as he was wearing border army armor.

This man is Bai Shirui, the bandit leader of White Tiger Mountain, nicknamed White Tiger.

Bai Shirui directed the bandits to push the horse-drawn cart. The snow was slippery, and the repeated trampling had left deep mud tracks. Bai Shirui cursed and swore at his men for their slow movements.

Lin Hui carefully examined the carriages. The ruts on these carriages were very deep, indicating that they were carrying very heavy loads.

Moreover, it was all covered with black cloth, so you couldn't see what was inside from the outside.

Besides Bai Shirui, there was another person standing next to him. This person was dressed in black armor, with a dark cloak behind him, and a horse-slaying saber, a unique weapon of the border army, hanging at his waist.

There is a fundamental difference between them and bandits in terms of their aura.

His eyes were bright and piercing, with nothing else in them but the carriages. He would lift the black cloth to check on each carriage as it passed by.

Only after confirming there are no problems do you wave them in.

From a distance, Lin Hui couldn't see who the person was, but he felt a sense of familiarity.

Just then, a carriage behind them got stuck in the mud and couldn't get out.

The man went up to check, and it was only then that Lin Hui could see the man's face clearly.

He had indeed seen him, and the impression was very deep. On that day in Anjia Wopeng, Cheng Wuyou was sitting on his horse, and it was he who was in charge of the army besieging the people of Cangying Ridge.

Lin Hui later found out after making inquiries.

This man was none other than Chen Ning, the deputy general of Ningyuan Town.

Not far from Chen Ning stood a group of about twenty people, all of whom were dressed in armor, equipped with long swords, and carried bows and arrows; they were clearly border soldiers.

Lin Hui was extremely puzzled.

Bandits were probably one of the ways border troops accumulated military merits.

Although wiping out a band of bandits is not as meritorious as killing enemy soldiers, it is still a meritorious deed.

But now, the border troops and bandits have actually mixed up together.

And they seem to have a good relationship.

Why is that?

Chen Ning and Bai Shirui chatted and laughed, showing that they were quite familiar with each other.

Just then, the bandits who had been chased by Lin Hui returned.

He dismounted upon arrival and scrambled to Bai Shirui's side.

Crying, he said, "Boss, the second-in-command has been killed. He was my elder brother! Boss, please avenge my brother!"

Upon hearing this, Bai Shirui's expression changed instantly.

He grabbed the man by the collar and roared, "What?! What did you say?"
