The next day at 3 PM, on the fourth floor of the library.
This study room is tucked away at the end of the corridor. It's usually not very popular, and the curtains are always drawn tightly.
Fang Zhaoyang stood in front of the long table, holding a newly printed indictment, and was assigning tasks to the dozen or so people sitting around him.
Lin Xiaokui sat next to him.
"These flyers will be posted on the bulletin boards in the cafeteria and teaching buildings tomorrow," Fang Zhaoyang said, pushing a stack of papers to the boy opposite him.
"Don't put it on the front door, put it on the side door. There's a security camera at the front door."
The door was pushed open, and Ruan Tang stood in the doorway.
She wore a light blue short-sleeved shirt and white canvas shoes today.
Lin Xiaokui was the first to stand up, the chair legs scraping against the floor with a screeching sound.
Fang Zhaoyang quickly flipped the indictment on the table over and covered it up.
"What are you doing here?" Lin Xiaokui asked.
Ruan Tang walked in and closed the door behind her.
She glanced at the flyers still on the table, the headlines half-revealed: The Truth About the Blacklist and Whitelist System…
She said, "Discussing how to expose the blacklist and whitelist in the library? Are you tired of living?"
Lin Xiaokui's expression changed. "How did you know we were here?"
"I know, the student council members already knew." Ruan Tang took a step forward.
"No matter how secluded this study room may be, it is still Shenglan's place."
"You think you can hide here and no one will see you? Student council members are already coming upstairs. Are you just waiting to be caught like turtles in a jar?"
Fang Zhaoyang grabbed the flyers from the table and stuffed them into his schoolbag. "Xiao Kui, let's go first."
"Wait a minute." Lin Xiaokui didn't move; she stared at Ruan Tang.
"Why should we believe you? You're a member of the deacon council now."
Ruan Tang looked at her, "Believe it or not."
"You think you're plotting in the shadows, but you've actually been operating right under their noses all along."
The study room was quiet for a while, then some people started to panic.
A boy wearing glasses stood up. "Brother Fang, is what she said true?"
Fang Zhaoyang didn't speak, his face was very ugly.
Another girl stood up, her voice trembling, "I felt something was wrong before. Every time we finished discussing something, the deacon team would find out. Someone must have leaked the information."
"It wasn't me!" the person next to him immediately denied.
"It wasn't me either!"
"Stop arguing!" Fang Zhaoyang slammed his hand on the table, and everyone quieted down.
He stared at Ruan Tang. "You're a member of the deacon group now. Who knows if you're just working for them and deliberately trying to scare us?"
Ruan Tang looked at him with a calm expression. "I've said it, believe it or not."
"You can stay here and wait for the student council to come and arrest you."
After she finished speaking, she turned around, opened the door, and walked out without looking back.
In the study room, someone spoke up, "Brother Fang, I think what she said is true, let's go."
"Yes, it's better to believe it exists than not to believe it doesn't."
"If the student council catches us, we'll all be punished."
Fang Zhaoyang gritted his teeth, his face turning ashen.
Lin Xiaokui stood next to him, clenching her fists.
She looked towards the doorway; Ruan Tang's figure had already disappeared.
She had a vague feeling: was Ruan Tang really helping them?
Or was all of this a setup by the deacon group?
Before she could think any further, footsteps approached from the end of the corridor. There was more than one person, and they were getting closer and closer.
Fang Zhaoyang slung his backpack over his shoulder, tugged at Lin Xiaokui's sleeve, and said, "Let's go!"
A dozen or so people filed out and ran down the stairs on the east side of the second floor.
As they were running down to the first floor, they bumped into a group of people.
Cheng Jin stood at the front, wearing a student council uniform, followed by seven or eight student council members.
The two groups bumped into each other on the stairs between the first and second floors.
Fang Zhaoyang stopped, his expression changing.
Cheng Jin looked at him calmly, "Fang Zhaoyang, where are all of you going after running out of the library?"
"Let's read books," Fang Zhaoyang said.
"Do you need more than a dozen people to read together?" Cheng Jin smiled.
"Besides, the way you all look, you don't seem to be here to read books; you look more like you're here for a meeting."
"Don't you know that gatherings are prohibited in libraries?"
Lin Xiaokui stepped forward and said, "We didn't have a gathering; we just came together to borrow books."
"Borrow books?" Cheng Jin glanced at her empty hands. "Where are the books?"
Lin Xiaokui choked.
Cheng Jin stopped arguing with her and turned to the student council members behind her, saying, "Check the study room to see if anything has been left behind."
The two responded and ran upstairs.
Less than two minutes later, they came down, holding a document in their hands.
"Vice President, I found this."
Cheng Jin took it, glanced at it, and then looked up at Fang Zhaoyang and Lin Xiaokui.
"What else do you have to say about the resistance group's action plan for next week?"
Fang Zhaoyang's face turned completely dark, and Lin Xiaokui bit her lip.
Students had already gathered around, pointing and whispering, the murmurs growing louder: "Is the resistance group up to something again?"
"A gathering in the library this time? That's incredibly audacious."
"Caught red-handed, serves you right."
Cheng Jin put the documents away and looked at Fang Zhaoyang. "Come with me to the student union office and we'll explain things clearly."
After he finished speaking, he turned and walked towards the door.
Student council members surrounded the resistance group, sandwiching them between them and pushing them out.
Fang Zhaoyang struggled for a moment as two people held his arms.
Lin Xiaokui walked at the very back, head down, face pale.
As she reached the door, she glanced back.
Ruan Tang stood by the railing of the second-floor corridor, looking down at everything below.
Their eyes met briefly in mid-air.
Lin Xiaokui's eyes held anger and humiliation.
Ruan Tang looked away and was about to walk forward when she suddenly heard a loud noise behind her.
Then came screams.
She turned around abruptly and saw that the stair railing had suddenly broken, and the railing had fallen and crashed onto the floor on the first floor.
Someone tumbled down the stairs.
They were members of the resistance group.
A girl fell to the bottom, hitting her forehead and bleeding profusely.
She lay on the ground, curled up, too pained to speak.
Several other people nearby also fell down, piling up on top of each other; some twisted their ankles, and others scraped their arms.
The scene suddenly descended into chaos.
The student council members rushed to help, but there were too many injured people to help them all.
The students watching screamed and backed away; someone knocked over a bookshelf, and books clattered to the ground.
Ruan Tang stood on the second floor, looking down at the chaos below.
She saw Su Nian standing at the top of the stairs, half of her body hanging outside, one hand gripping the broken railing, the other waving wildly in the air.
She was about to fall.
Without thinking twice, Ruan Tang rushed over.
She grabbed Su Nian's wrist and pulled it back forcefully.
Su Nian's body was very light, but the inertia of the fall was too great. Ruan Tang was pulled forward and staggered two steps, with half of her body also hanging over the railing.
Su Nian looked up and saw that it was Ruan Tang, and was stunned.
"Please, don't let go, I still have my grandmother to take care of..." Her voice trembled.
Ruan Tang didn't say anything, but increased the pressure on her hand.
Just then, a hand reached out from behind, grabbed Ruan Tang's collar, and pulled her and Su Nian back together.
The two people fell to the ground and rolled around in a heap.
Ruan Tang, panting, looked up and saw Cheng Jin standing in front of her.
She found it hard to describe the look in Cheng Jin's eyes at that moment.
It was as if it had pulled back the self that once still had a conscience and struggled.
