Chapter 341 The Golden Retriever's Ambition! Area 51's "Superman Project"
On the other side of the ocean, in the oval office of the Gray Palace, the atmosphere was so oppressive it felt like you could wring water out of it.
A half-full glass of sugar-free cola with lots of ice was smashed onto the intricately patterned wallpaper. The glass shattered into pieces, with shards of all sizes scattering across the carpet.
Brown carbonated beverage mixed with half-melted ice dripped down the wall, leaving an extremely unsightly stain.
The blond president slammed his hand hard on the large mahogany desk, his chest heaving violently, the hem of his suit jacket swaying with his heavy breathing.
Intelligence Chief Herman stood three steps away from the table, head down, his eyes fixed on the two drops of cola that had splashed onto the tip of his leather shoes, barely daring to breathe.
"Six top agents!" the blond president roared in frustration, the metal pen holder on the table vibrating loudly. "Equipped with the best gear in the country, they infiltrated a factory area without even a human security guard. And now you come to tell me they were all wiped out? Not a single frame, not a single byte of data, was transmitted?"
Herman swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing up and down.
"Blonde President, the electromagnetic shielding layer over there in Great Xia is too thick; our reconnaissance satellites simply can't penetrate it."
Herman, forcing himself to speak, rushed through his explanation, afraid of being interrupted: "After the Ghost Team cut off the outer power grid, communications were completely cut off. We waited for ten hours on the support ship in international waters, and in the end, we only detected a very brief, localized surge of heat inside the factory. Other than that, nothing."
"A localized surge in heat?" The blond president grabbed a metal paperweight from the table, raised it to smash it, and finally slammed it down on the table with a dull thud. "That's them burning corpses! The Great Xia people burned your much-hyped Ghost Squad like trash!"
Herman lowered his head even further, put his hands behind his back, and twisted his fingers together.
"A bunch of stupid pigs who eat for free." The blond president pushed the paperweight aside, walked around the desk, and kicked over the leather chair next to it.
The chair overturned on the ground, its wheels still spinning in mid-air.
"The Great Xia people have already flattened an island in the East China Sea, and now they're causing such a huge commotion in Shanghai. They're playing their cards one after another. What about us?"
The blond president tugged at his tie, pulling it askew, the veins in his neck bulging. "Less than eighteen months until the election! My approval rating is dropping every day! And you bunch of idiots are still writing this garbage report of failure!"
Herman took a half step back, dodging the spittle that the blond president was spitting at him.
"Back up the plane." The blond-haired president turned around and strode towards the door. "To the western desert. I'm going to see what that old bastard Smith has come up with that's even remotely useful. The Great Xia people have a knife to our throats; I don't have time to listen to your excuses."
Four hours later.
The presidential plane landed at a military airfield in the western desert. Gray military helicopters took over, kicking up clouds of yellow sand, and delivered the blond president and a group of black-clad agents to the building disguised as an abandoned hangar.
Palmprint recognition, pupil scanning.
The heavy metal elevator doors closed, and the car began its descent deeper underground. The feeling of weightlessness lasted for a full two minutes. The elevator doors opened at the core base, 500 meters underground. A blast of cold air hit them, causing the blond president's suit jacket to billow backward.
Lead researcher Smith was already waiting at the elevator entrance. His white lab coat was buttoned up tightly, and he was holding a tactical tablet. His forehead and nose were covered in sweat.
More than half a month has passed since they forcibly cracked the core of the alien spaceship and broadcast the coordinates of Earth.
In the past two weeks, No. 51 restricted area received unlimited funding from the Supreme Council. The equipment in the entire underground base was replaced, researchers worked around the clock, and people were carried into the infirmary every day due to overwork.
"Blonde President." Smith stepped forward, his steps a little unsteady, and reached out to take the blonde president's coat.
The blond president ignored his greeting, tossed his coat to the agent beside him, and strode into the base, his leather shoes echoing rapidly on the epoxy floor.
"Don't report those charts and data that I don't understand," the blond president said as he walked, with two agents following closely behind him, keeping Smith half a body length away.
"I only want results. After more than half a month, what have you managed to scramble from that piece of junk that will satisfy the Supreme Council?"
Smith quickly quickened his pace to catch up, his fingers flying across the tablet to bring up a briefing.
"Sir, we've extracted a fragment of the technology from the core database," Smith reported as he walked, his voice echoing through the empty underground corridor.
"The miniaturization of high-energy laser weapons has been theoretically verified, and the engine of the new anti-gravity aircraft is undergoing bench testing. We have also made breakthroughs in materials science, reverse-engineering a high-strength material from alien armor..."
The blond president stopped and turned to stare at him, his gaze extremely imposing.
"How much longer?" the blond president interrupted him. "How much longer will it take to turn these theories into real weapons, to equip our fighter jets and tanks?"
"Well... given the limitations of our existing basic industries, it will take at least a year." Smith wiped his forehead with his sleeve. "Engineering translation takes time, sir."
"A year?" The blond president sneered, sticking out a finger and poking Smith in the chest.
"I can't even wait five months! The Great Xia people's silver robots can already tear armored vehicles apart with their bare hands. You want me to wait a year? I allocate hundreds of billions to you every year, not for you to write papers. I need combat power that can be put to use right now!"
Smith was so startled that he took a half step back, swallowed hard, and quickly flipped the tablet over, handing it to the blond president.
The screen displays a diagram of human anatomy, surrounded by densely packed spiral gene chains, with several sets of data jumping wildly around it.
"There are projects that are progressing the fastest and are closest to practical application, sir."
Smith's voice rose two octaves, brimming with barely suppressed fervor. "Physics and engineering take time, but biology doesn't. We found a dormant genetic map in the core database of the alien spaceship wreckage."
The blond president straightened his tie and fixed his gaze on the tablet.
"Biological genes?" The blond president sized Smith up, his tone tinged with doubt. "Could you help me dismantle those damned robots in Great Xia?"
"Absolutely!" Smith nodded emphatically, swiping his finger across the screen to display a comparison image.
"Blonde President, we've fused and recombine the alien gene sequences we've deciphered with human DNA. The nation's top biologists have been working non-stop here for half a month, and we've run tens of millions of fusion model simulations."
He pointed to the spiral chain on the screen that shimmered with a dark gold luster.
"We call it 'Project Superman'," Smith said, his words growing faster and faster, spittle flying from his mouth.
"This is not a simple physical enhancement, nor is it the injection of any steroids. The alien genetic sequence contains a highly aggressive energy conversion mechanism."
If the fusion is successful, human muscle fiber density will increase dozens of times, bone strength will rival that of steel, and neural reaction speed will surpass the physical limits of carbon-based life forms. We will be able to mass-produce invincible super soldiers capable of tearing apart Great Xia robots with their bare hands.
A glint appeared in the blond president's eyes. He grabbed the tablet, zoomed in on the muscle structure diagram, glanced at it, and then tossed it back to Smith.
"Take me to see it," the blond president uttered.
The group passed through three heavy blast doors, boarded an internal shuttle bus, and arrived at the fully enclosed core laboratory at the deepest part of the underground base.
The security level here was ridiculously high; even the blond president's personal agent was stopped at the last door. The blond president followed Smith into the observation room.
Directly in front was a single piece of special bulletproof glass, half a meter thick. Behind the glass was a circular isolation chamber, with densely packed light tubes and several oddly shaped launchers on the ceiling.
The blond president walked to the glass and looked inside.
On the metal experimental table in the very center of the isolation chamber, a person was locked up.
It was a tall, muscular white man, nearly two meters tall, completely naked, with muscles that were so bulging they were almost deformed, bulging under his skin, and even the veins were thicker than those of an average person.
His limbs and torso were firmly secured to a metal platform by thick, special alloy chains. Dozens of transparent medical catheters were inserted into his veins, spine, and back of the head, with various colored liquids slowly flowing through them.
"Subject Zero." Smith stood in front of the control panel, pulling up various physiological data. "Former ace of the Sixth Team of the Seawolf Commando, codenamed 'Grizzly.' He was severely injured during a mission in the Middle East and was originally facing amputation and retirement. He voluntarily signed a waiver of liability to participate in this experiment."
The blond president braced his hands on the glass, staring at the burly man on the platform, who was breathing heavily, watching his chest heave violently.
"Can he control him?" the blond president asked. "I don't want to create a monster that won't even obey my orders."
"We implanted a miniature neural bomb in his cerebral cortex."
Smith typed on the keyboard, and an X-ray of the grizzly bear's head appeared on the screen. A small red dot was positioned at the brainstem. "As soon as he shows any brainwave fluctuations that defy commands, this bomb will sever his brainstem directly. 100% controllable."
The blond president nodded in satisfaction and straightened up.
"Let's begin," the blond president commanded.
Smith entered a three-segment password on the console and pushed a red push button.
"Blonde President, we just injected him with a purified alien gene fusion agent."
Smith pointed to the progress bar on the console, "The drug has entered his cell nucleus and is rewriting his genes. Now, all that's needed is to irradiate him with high-energy gamma rays of a specific frequency to fully activate the genetic lock in his body."
Inside the isolation chamber, the liquid in several tubes turned dark green and was injected entirely into the grizzly bear's body.
Grizzly's body began to spasm slightly, and the alloy chains rattled as he pulled them.
Smith pressed the largest green button on the console.
The experiment officially began.
Inside the isolation chamber, all conventional lighting was turned off. Three transmitters hummed simultaneously, and blinding, eerie blue gamma rays shot out from the top of the chamber, converging in a triangular pattern at the center of the experimental table, precisely enveloping the entire body of Experiment Zero.
The high-frequency energy flow rippled through the air, causing even the bulletproof glass to resonate slightly.
The grizzly bear arched its body sharply upwards, its spine cracking with a teeth-grinding sound. It opened its mouth and let out an extremely piercing roar. The sound pierced through the half-meter-thick bulletproof glass and into the ears of the people in the observation room, causing a sharp pain in their eardrums.
The blond president pressed himself against the glass, staring expectantly at the changes in the blue light.
Continuous exposure to gamma rays.
The grizzly bear's muscles began to swell and twitch in a way that defied physiological common sense. Large patches of dark yellow cracks appeared beneath its skin, like a dried-up, cracked riverbed.
A faint yellow light emanated from the cracks, and some force not belonging to earthly beings was rampaging through his veins, as if something was about to burst out of his body.
"Heart rate exceeds 300!"
"The cell division rate has reached four thousand times the normal value!"
"The bone density is remodeling, and the stress value of the alloy chain exceeds the standard!"
Several researchers at the control panel loudly reported data, their fingers leaving afterimages on the keyboard.
Smith stared at the gene fusion progress bar on the main screen, watching it soar to 85 percent.
"Status is stable, fusion is exceeding expectations." Smith grabbed the communicator. "Prepare to cut off the gamma rays, inject sedatives, and begin the first phase of data sampling."
The operator pulled down the power cut-off gate.
The gate was pulled all the way down, producing a dull metallic clang.
The eerie blue beam of light inside the isolation chamber did not disappear.
Not only did it not disappear, the brightness of the beam actually doubled, making people's eyes sting.
A dazzling burst of sparks erupted from inside the console.
With a loud "bang," sparks flew onto the operator's white coat, burning a hole through it. A piercing red alarm suddenly blared throughout the base, 500 meters underground, and the emergency red lights on the walls flashed frantically.
"Doctor!" The operator scrambled backward, pointing at the completely black control panel, his voice filled with despair, "The gamma ray device is out of control! Physical cutoff is ineffective, the energy circuit is locked in reverse! The output power is skyrocketing!"
Smith's fervent expression froze.
He rushed to the control panel and frantically typed on the spare keyboard, the screen displaying only gibberish.
"Cut off the main power! Cut off the power to the entire lab!" Smith yelled into the walkie-talkie.
That's too late.
Inside the isolation chamber, the eerie blue gamma rays had transformed into tangible energy pillars.
Subject Zero emitted a bloodcurdling roar, inhuman and horrific. The sound contained a low-frequency vibration that caused fine, network-like cracks to appear on the bulletproof glass.
The dark yellow cracks on his body completely burst open, and what flowed out was not blood, but scalding yellow viscous fluid.
The intense energy instantly ignited the surrounding monitoring instruments. Flames shot up and quickly spread throughout the entire experimental platform.
"boom!"
Inside the isolation chamber, a high-pressure oxygen tank detonated under the intense heat, igniting a massive fire that engulfed the entire laboratory. Thick smoke billowed, and flames licked at the bulletproof glass, instantly obliterating everything inside the isolation chamber.
The blond president took two steps back and slammed his back against the wall.
Smith and several researchers stood frozen in place.
Everyone stared intently at the churning sea of fire, their hearts pounding in their throats.
In the firelight, the crisp sound of the alloy chain snapping could be clearly heard.
