Chapter 164 The Veteran Detective Who Isn't Easily Fooled
At the scene of the fire, the thick smoke had not yet completely dissipated.
The air was filled with a burnt smell, mixed with the pungent odor of burning plastic and some indescribable acrid smell.
The entire mansion has been burned beyond recognition, and the once elegant Japanese garden has been turned into a black ruin.
The crossbeams lay broken on the pile of rubble, and occasionally wisps of smoke could be seen rising from the cracks.
Wearing a gas mask, Sato Miwako followed Inspector Megure into the scene, stepping through the muddy ashes.
The beam of her flashlight swept across the ruins, illuminating piles of twisted and deformed metal frames and charred wooden structures.
Then her beam of light stopped where it shouldn't have.
A hand emerged from the rubble, completely charred, its five fingers curled up as if it were clutching something before it died.
Miwako Sato suddenly stopped in her tracks.
She moved the flashlight beam to the side, and there was another one.
Move it again...
More corpses lay scattered haphazardly throughout the ruins.
Some had half their bodies pinned down by the collapsed beams, some were curled up in a ball, and some were so badly unrecognizable that their original shape was no longer discernible.
She counted them one by one, but when she got to ten, she didn't want to count anymore.
And it wasn't just corpses.
Among the charred and deformed metal wreckage, she recognized quite a few things.
A twisted barrel, a magazine half-melted, a grenade launcher cylinder deformed by the high temperature, and even an M134 Gatling gun skeleton burned into an iron frame.
Her voice, coming through the gas mask, was filled with barely suppressed shock: "Inspector... what on earth happened?"
Takagi Wataru followed not far behind her, his flashlight scanning the surroundings.
His voice trembled with shock as well: "There... must have been a fire here, right?"
Megure stood in the center of the ruins, not in a hurry to answer.
He crouched down, picked up a small pinch of ash mixed with metal fragments with his white-gloved fingers, examined it under the light for a moment, and then stood up.
His years of experience as a police officer told him that this was by no means an ordinary fire accident, nor could it be caused by a simple gang fight!
Having been a detective for decades, he could tell at a glance that the scale of the destruction, the number of corpses, and the type of firearms residue far exceeded the capabilities of the First Investigation Division.
He immediately issued the order: "All officers, evacuate the crime scene immediately!"
Upon hearing the order, the police officers who were conducting the reconnaissance did not hesitate at all. They put down their tools, turned around, and quickly retreated beyond the cordon.
Without asking any unnecessary questions, Miwako Sato decisively turned around and followed the group.
Only Takagi Wataru stood there stunned for a moment, looking at the charred corpses on the ground, then at the back of Inspector Megure who had already strode away, before quickly jogging to catch up.
The group retreated outside the cordon.
Miwako Sato removed her gas mask, took a deep breath of fresh air, and then brushed her sweat-dampened hair back.
Takagi Wataru also removed his mask, his face still showing lingering confusion, and leaned closer to ask in a low voice:
"Officer Sato, why did you suddenly leave? We just discovered a clue, didn't we?"
Sato Miwako wiped the sweat from her forehead with the back of her hand and replied in a knowing tone, "Takagi, don't you understand?"
"With so many corpses and so much heavy weaponry, this case is beyond the scope of our First Investigation Division."
She turned to look at him, "If we painstakingly investigate the scene, gather the evidence, and identify the suspects..."
"The police will definitely come immediately and take over the case without saying a word!"
"We also have to sign a confidentiality agreement, we won't get a penny of overtime pay, all the credit will go to them, and we'll have worked for nothing."
After hearing this, Takagi Wataru paused for a moment, then slowly revealed an expression of sudden understanding: "Oh, I see..."
Things unfolded exactly as Sato Miwako had predicted.
After leaving the cordon, Inspector Megure went straight to his car, picked up his walkie-talkie, and contacted his superiors, giving a brief report on the situation at the scene.
Numerous corpses, wreckage of heavy weapons, and signs of a possible large-scale armed conflict...
About ten minutes later, two black government vehicles stopped outside the cordon.
The car door opened, and several men in dark suits with serious expressions stepped out.
The person in the lead, Sato Miwako, knew him; it was Kazami Yuya.
The people in the public security department were old acquaintances of theirs.
When Inspector Megure saw Kazami Yuya approaching, he didn't exchange any pleasantries and directly handed over the folder containing his on-site investigation records, saying in a businesslike tone:
"The site is now handed over to you. We're back to work."
Kazami Yuya took the folder, quickly flipped through two pages, then looked up and called out to Inspector Megure, who was about to turn and leave: "Inspector Megure, please wait a moment."
"The scene is very large, and there is a lot of evidence. We hope that your First Investigation Division personnel can stay and assist us with the preliminary investigation."
Megure stopped and turned to look at Kazami Yuya.
His expression and tone were very polite: "I'm very sorry, Officer Kazami."
"Our First Investigation Division has many other cases to handle, and we simply don't have enough manpower to assist you."
He paused for a moment, then added, "If you really need our help, please contact my superiors and follow the formal procedures."
After saying that, he didn't give Kazami Yuya any further chance to speak, turned around and strode towards his police car, waving to the other officers: "Fall in!"
As Sato Miwako opened the car door and got in, she glanced through the car window at Kazami Yuya, who was standing next to the police line.
His face didn't show any obvious expression, but Sato Miwako could sense his helplessness.
She couldn't help but smile to herself.
They're trying to trick veteran detectives from the First Investigative Division into becoming their free laborers?
No way.
Kazami Yuya stood beside the police line, watching Inspector Megure's convoy drive away, his face expressionless for a long while.
A young subordinate beside him leaned over and whispered, "Officer Kazami, what do we do?"
Kazami Yuya withdrew his gaze, turned to look at the still-smoldering ruins behind him, remained silent for a moment, and then said softly:
"What else can we do? Call for backup. With such a large scene, let's keep them up all night."
After he finished speaking, he stepped across the cordon, his feet crunching over the ashes and rubble, and walked deeper into the ruins that reeked of burnt earth.
