Chapter 261 Accidental Killing and Covering Up the Truth

It was past 5 p.m., and the sun was still quite strong, but the doors of the Mika Library were tightly closed.

A sign that read "Closed Today" hung at the entrance, and the glass door was locked tightly from the inside.

Lin Shen parked the car on the side of the road, walked over to take a look, then turned back to look at Conan: "Is this the place you were talking about?"

Conan nodded: "This is the place Ayumi and the others were talking about."

Lin Shen didn't ask any more questions. He went around to the side fire escape and tried the iron gate.

Locked.

Lin Shen glanced around to make sure there were no surveillance cameras, then took a thin wire out of his pocket and bent down to fidget with it in the keyhole.

Click—

The door opened.

"Let's go." Lin Shen pushed open the door and stepped aside to let Conan go in first.

Conan, watching his fluid and effortless movements, couldn't help but pause in surprise: "You can pick locks?"

Lin Shen casually replied, "I've studied that before."

Without further explanation, I went straight inside.

Conan didn't press the matter; now was not the time to dwell on such things.

The two walked down the corridor, and Conan took out his phone to call Ayumi: "Ayumi, where are you?"

"The children's area!" Ayumi's voice trembled with tears. "Conan, come quick!"

Conan hung up the phone and quickened his pace.

Lin Shen followed behind him, passing through rows of bookshelves, and finally stopped at the children's reading area near the window.

The scene before him made Conan's expression turn sour.

Ayumi, Genta, and Mitsuhiko huddled in a corner, their faces pale and their eyes red.

On the ground in front of them, a middle-aged man in a dark suit lay face up, with a large pool of blood on his chest that had spread into the cracks between the floor tiles.

The man's face still showed the shock of his impending death.

His work ID on his pocket read his identity information—Hideharu Tsugawa.

Conan's expression instantly turned serious. He walked up to the three children and glanced at them, saying, "What happened? Tell me slowly, don't rush me."

Mitsuhiko took several deep breaths before finally speaking: "We passed by here after school and saw that the library was closed, but the lights on the second floor were still on."

"Then we heard police cars at the door... It sounded like the police said an employee was missing and they were coming to investigate."

Yuan Tai added, "We were curious, so we sneaked in to take a look."

Mitsuhiko continued, "Then we followed Director Tsugawa to the warehouse on the second floor to see what he was doing sneakily."

Conan frowned: "What did he do?"

Mitsuhiko bit his lip: "He's hiding something in the book."

"We hid behind the door and saw packets of white powder; we guessed it was medicine."

Conan's expression grew even more somber.

Clues flashed through his mind: the police had mentioned the unusual behavior of the director of the Tsugawa Museum when they were investigating the missing employees.

Now, combined with Mitsuhiko's statement about "hiding drugs," the suspicion against Director Tsugawa is completely confirmed.

Mitsuhiko's voice continued: "We've been discovered... After Director Tsugawa saw us, he wanted to silence us!"

His voice trailed off: "I was so scared... we ran when he charged at us!"

"But when I ran here and there was nowhere to run, I remembered that I still had the gun that President Lin had given us to use for self-defense in my backpack."

Lin Shen smiled and said, "See! Now it's come in handy!"

Conan was speechless, but he had to admit it.

If it weren't for the gun Lin Shen gave them, the three kids would be dead by now.

Mitsuhiko's lips trembled slightly: "Then I fired... He really got shot... I didn't mean to..."

After he finished speaking, he finally couldn't hold back anymore, and tears streamed down his face: "I didn't want to kill anyone! I was just too scared!"

Ayumi and Genta quickly reached out and grabbed him, their eyes also reddening.

After hearing this, Conan stood quietly for a long while before letting out a long sigh of relief.

He felt relieved, and his tone softened considerably: "Alright, it's done now, don't blame yourself too much."

"You acted in self-defense; you only fired after the other side threatened your lives with a gun first."

"If you call the police in this situation, they will consider it self-defense and you will be fine."

He paused, then added, "At most, it'll be a verbal reprimand."

However, as soon as he finished speaking, three pairs of eyes turned to him simultaneously—Ayumi, Genta, and Mitsuhiko all shouted at the same time, "Don't call the police!"

Ayumi burst into tears: "If we call the police, my parents will definitely find out!"

"If they found out we shot and killed someone, they'd never let us hang out together again!"

Yuan Tai chimed in anxiously, "Yeah! I might even get expelled from school! My mom would definitely kill me then!"

Mitsuhiko shook his head repeatedly: "If the police find out we used real guns, we're really finished!"

Conan's forehead was covered in sweat: "No... listen to me..."

Before he could finish speaking, Lin Shen suddenly interrupted, "Alright, alright, stop arguing. The kids have a point."

Conan turned to look at him, his eyes wide: "What do you mean?"

Lin Shen walked over, squatted down, and glanced at the corpse of Director Tsugawa on the ground: "Look, the library is closed."

"There are no security cameras in this corner. It's just the few of you there, plus the two of us. Who can prove that Mitsuhiko pulled out his gun first?"

He glanced at the children. "Since it was self-defense anyway, might as well just do it cleanly!"

"If anyone asks, just say that this gun belongs to Director Tsugawa."

"He suddenly went berserk and tried to kill you, but you guys took advantage of the chaos to grab the guns and kill him instead."

"That works, doesn't it?"

Conan was stunned after hearing this: "Aren't you teaching them to lie?"

Lin Shen shrugged, looking innocent. "I call this reasonable risk avoidance. Anyway, the facts are pretty much the same, just a different way of saying it."

He glanced at the pool of blood on the ground. "Besides, this old bastard was hiding drugs; he deserved to die."

"They're already dead, it's not right to make a few children carry a murder record, is it?"

Ayumi nodded like a chick pecking at rice: "That's right, that's right!"

Genta chimed in, "President Hayashi is right!"

Mitsuhiko wiped away his tears, and his gaze began to waver.

Conan was completely bewildered by the sight of the four people forming a united front.

He took a deep breath, his tone resolute: "No, I still feel we can't fabricate anything. You..."

Halfway through their sentence, the three children shouted in unison, "Conan!!"

Ayumi pleaded pitifully, "Please help us! I beg you!"

Yuan Tai: "We promise we'll never run off like that again!"

Mitsuhiko: "Consider it a favor we're asking you! It was a decision we made together!"

Conan was stared at by those three pairs of eyes. He opened his mouth, but couldn't find a single word to refute them.

The stalemate lasted for more than a minute.

He looked at the corpse on the ground, then at the three children in front of him, and then at Lin Shen, who had an indifferent expression that said, "It doesn't matter, you can choose for yourself anyway."

Finally, he reached up and pushed up his glasses, letting out a long sigh.

"Alright...we'll do as President Lin says."

Conan isn't that rigid. Anyway, Mitsuhiko, Genta, and Ayumi were only acting in self-defense, not intentionally killing anyone.

Ultimately, they will all be released.

He quickly added a series of precautions, "But first, we need to load the gun and let him get some gunpowder residue on his hands."

"Then you put the gun in his hand, let him hold it for a moment, and then drop it on the ground."

"Also, your testimonies need to match: he pulled out a gun first, you were scared, you rushed at him to grab the gun, and it accidentally went off during the struggle. Do you understand?"

Lin Shen's lips curled up slightly: "See, it's working now."

Conan glared at him coldly and muttered, "...I guess I'm destined for hell."

Lin Shen patted his shoulder, his tone tinged with amusement: "It's alright, I'll be there for you when that day comes."

Conan said irritably, "I don't need you to keep me company!"

After the children finished giving their statements, they all said to Conan in unison, "Thank you, Conan!"

Conan remained expressionless, his only thought being to end this as soon as possible.
