Chapter 78 Conan's Shock
Conan lay on the bed in his hotel room, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep.
He stared at the ceiling for a while, then turned to look at the moonlight outside the window, his mind filled with the bits and pieces of information he had gathered in the town during the day.
The history of Tsukikage Island, the fire that killed Keiji Aso's family twelve years ago, Dr. Narumi's clinic filled with piano sheet music, and the old residents on the island whose expressions changed strangely when Keiji Aso was mentioned.
I always feel like there's something stuck in my head that I can't quite connect.
The more he thought about it, the clearer his mind became, so he simply sat up in bed.
Glancing at Kogoro Mouri, who was drunk and slumped over the side, she knew she couldn't count on the old man tonight.
He jumped out of bed, put on his shoes, and tiptoed out of the room.
When the night breeze blew on his face, Conan felt his mind clear up considerably.
He wandered aimlessly along the town's main street.
It's only a little past eight o'clock in the evening, and most of the shops on both sides of the street have already closed. Only the streetlights are still on, casting a long shadow over him.
The nights on Moonshadow Island were eerily quiet; not even a dog barked.
After walking for about ten minutes, he came to a slightly higher position, where he could see the brightly lit buildings on the mountainside in the distance.
That was Kuroiwa Tatsuji's residence.
He had inquired during the day and learned that Kuroiwa Tatsuji was the true ruler of this island, having served as village chief for many years and wielding immense power!
He stood by the roadside, staring at the lights for a while, when he suddenly heard some unusual sounds.
It wasn't the sound of the wind, nor the sound of the waves.
It was a very faint, intermittent muffled sound, like something was banging on the door from a distance.
Conan frowned.
He walked a short distance and listened carefully for a while.
The sound was still there, though very faint, almost indistinguishable in the quiet night breeze, but the more he listened, the more uneasy he felt.
That wasn't the sound of knocking on the door!
Those were gunshots!!
Conan's heart skipped a beat!
"Gunshots? Why are there gunshots here?"
He didn't understand, but he was certain something had happened!
Without hesitation, he abandoned his leisurely stroll and, like a cat that had spotted its prey, crouched low and ran at full speed along the shadows where the streetlights couldn't reach, toward the lights on the hillside.
He was very fast, his footsteps were almost silent, but even so, it took him almost ten minutes to get close to the area of the mansion.
As they drew closer, the faint sounds became clearer and clearer.
It wasn't just one or two gunshots, but a continuous barrage of shots, as dense as firecrackers.
Interspersed among the noise were several muffled explosions and faint screams.
Conan crouched down behind a large camphor tree on the outskirts of the mansion, cautiously peeking out half his head to observe.
The mansion's gates were tightly shut, but through the cracks in the gates and above the walls, one could see flickering lights in the windows of several buildings inside, figures running in the courtyard, and someone shouting something.
Then came another burst of rapid gunfire, and the shouting stopped abruptly.
Conan crouched behind a tree, his mind racing, trying to figure out how to sneak in without being discovered.
Before he could come up with a good solution, he heard a dull metallic clang coming from the direction of the main gate.
Immediately afterwards, the heavy, black lacquered door was pushed open from the inside with a bang.
A figure walked out of the open door.
His steps were unhurried, his pace neither too fast nor too slow, as if he had just returned from a walk.
After Conan saw the person's face clearly by the light of the street lamp, his pupils suddenly dilated!
What?
It's deep in the forest!
It's President Hayashi, who was drinking with Kogoro Mouri at the restaurant in town earlier today!
Conan was shocked. He simply couldn't reconcile the other person with the smiling President Hayashi who had invited him and the Detective Boys to eat shaved ice!
But the Lin Shen in front of me is not the same person as the one from earlier in the day.
His coat was ripped beyond recognition, covered with tears and black burn marks, half of the sleeve was blown off, and his exposed arm was covered with soot and dried blood.
He was holding a Glock pistol with a wisp of smoke still rising from its muzzle, and he exuded a murderous aura.
The other person was completely different from the young man who had been smiling and saying "The seafood here is really good" in the restaurant during the day.
Conan held his breath.
He instinctively shrank into the shadow of the tree trunk, barely daring to breathe, his heart pounding like a drum.
Countless thoughts flashed through his mind in an instant!
Who exactly is President Lin?
Assassin? Police officer? Special agent? Or someone from some other organization?
Conan's gaze was fixed on Lin Shen, watching him calmly stretch his shoulders at the gate, then slowly walk down the slope in front of the gate, his figure quickly disappearing into the alternating shadows of the streetlights and trees.
After Lin Shen's figure disappeared completely, Conan squatted behind the tree and waited for about ten seconds.
Once he was sure the other party wouldn't come back, he sprang out from behind the tree and rushed into the open door.
As soon as he stepped inside, he was stunned, as if a bucket of ice water had been poured over him from head to toe.
The courtyard was littered with corpses.
Bodyguards in black suits, samurai in dark kimonos, some people lying in the corridor, some lying on the edge of the flower bed, some hanging halfway from the broken door frame, bullet holes and bloodstains everywhere on the floor, walls and pillars, the air filled with a strong smell of gunpowder and blood.
Conan stood at the door, momentarily forgetting to even breathe.
He had dealt with many people and seen many corpses, but he had never seen so many people die in one mansion at the same time.
He strode forward, knelt down, and examined the nearest body—it was a gunshot wound, one bullet to the chest and one to the head, the operation clean and efficient, with no unnecessary follow-up shots.
He then looked at the other bodies nearby, all of them bearing gunshot wounds, and most of them were fatal from one or two shots, with no extra wounds.
He began to walk quickly deeper into the mansion, his heart beating faster and faster with each step.
People lay dead everywhere—in the corridors, courtyards, and on the steps of the annex. Bullet casings were scattered on the wooden floors, making a soft crunching sound when stepped on.
A pillar slashed by a knife, a floorboard blasted with a large hole by a grenade, a shoji door riddled with bullet holes!
The entire mansion looked like it had been the site of a small-scale war.
Conan inexplicably felt a chill run down his spine.
After regaining his senses, he walked through the messy courtyard and broken corridors to the main house.
There, he saw Kuroiwa Tatsuji.
The village chief, who had been so arrogant during the day, was now lying face up at the door of his study, his chest covered in blood, his eyes still open, and his face frozen in an expression of anger and fear.
A few steps away, Kuroiwa Reiko, wearing a yukata, also fell to the ground, shot in the back of the head, her posture twisted against the wall.
Conan's fist clenched involuntarily.
Although he didn't know exactly what the Heiyan family had done, judging from what he saw before him—Lin Shen alone had slaughtered the entire Heiyan family.
