Chapter 28 Moving into the New Laboratory
Lin Muyang squatted down and touched Da Ju's belly. Da Ju rolled over, lying on its back with its four paws in the air, sleeping like an orange rug.
"Effective. The sound wave frequency is stable at 30 Hz." Lin Muyang glanced at the data.
Xiao Kui shouted to the camera: "Family members, mimosa and cola, a sleep aid! Purely physical hypnosis, no chemical additives, harmless to the body—it just uses up a bit of mimosa."
Bullet comments:
"I've already tried it, and my husband sleeps like a log."
"I don't have any screaming plants at home, can I use regular mimosa plants instead?"
"Ordinary mimosa plants only close their leaves; they don't induce sleep."
Xiao Kui glanced at her private messages. Niu Ma sent another one: "Lin Xiao Kui, can I visit your lab? I'd like to see your plants in person and measure the specific parameters of the sound waves."
Xiao Kui handed the phone to Lin Muyang, who glanced at it and nodded.
"Let him come. Bring his equipment."
Xiao Kui replied to A Qiang: "Welcome to the lab. Bring your screaming grass and sonic boomerang."
Niu Ma replied instantly: "See you tomorrow."
Xiao Kui turned off the live stream and let out a long sigh. She turned her head and glanced at the big orange cat in the corner—the cat was still sleeping, its belly rising and falling, its tail twitching occasionally.
Lin Muyang opened his notebook and wrote:
"Plant Evolution Log No. 002 Supplement"
"New discovery about the Screaming Grass: Adding sugar to water can trigger hypnotic effects."
"Triggering mechanism: Sugar stimulates the leaf edge to generate a low-frequency sound wave of about 30 Hz."
Transmission medium: air. No contact required, effective within 3 meters.
*Effect strength: Moderate concentrations can induce deep sleep in adults within 3-5 minutes.
"Verification target: Orange, the effect is very significant."
He closed his laptop, turned off the light, and the lab went dark.
The screaming grass let out a soft "ah" on the windowsill.
The orange cat rolled over in its sleep, kicking its paws twice in the air as if chasing a non-existent mouse.
Early the next morning, Lin Muyang took a sealed box out of the refrigerator and handed it to Xiao Kui. Inside was a giant tomato.
"Go to the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Find the Institute of Agricultural Product Quality Standards and have them do component testing."
"Me? Aren't you going?" Xiao Kui asked curiously as she took the sealed box.
"I need to tidy up the lab and prepare to move."
Xiao Kui went out carrying a backpack and a sealed box in her hands.
Half an hour later, at the entrance of the laboratory, a young man wearing a plaid shirt and carrying a large bag was peeking inside.
His hair was messy, he wore black-rimmed glasses, and a handheld sonic detector was tucked into the side of his backpack.
"Excuse me... is Lin Muyang here?"
Lin Muyang walked out of the laboratory and looked the newcomer up and down.
"Who are you?"
"I'm Niu Ma. I'm that... science popularization blogger. I sent Xiao Kui a private message before."
The young man smiled a little embarrassedly: "My name is Wu Feng. Niu Ma is just a nickname given to me by my fans. Everyone calls me that."
Lin Muyang glanced at him expressionlessly, then turned and walked into the laboratory: "Come in."
Wu Feng immediately followed. He had watched Xiao Kui's live stream and knew that Lin Muyang's nickname was "Stompy Guy," so he was not surprised by his attitude at all.
The lab was a mess; Lin Muyang was already preparing to move. Reagent bottles, petri dishes, and notebooks were all packed up and piled on the floor.
The countertop had been cleared out, leaving only a lamp and the bowl of cat food. The orange tabby sat beside the food bowl, its tail curled up, watching Wu Feng warily.
Wu Feng placed the mimosa plant on the operating table and took out the acoustic detector from his backpack with practiced movements.
"You said before that the hypnotic sound waves of the mimosa plant are 30 Hz?" Wu Feng asked curiously.
"The actual frequency is between 28 and 32 Hz. Sugar concentration affects the frequency." Lin Muyang took a can of cola from the refrigerator and poured a small cup into Screaming Sister's flowerpot.
The leaves of the screaming lady slowly opened, and the edges of the leaves began to tremble.
Wu Feng aimed the detector's probe at the mimosa plant, and a waveform appeared on the screen. His eyes lit up.
"29.7 Hz! Stable! Wow, this waveform is so clean!"
Lin Muyang said expressionlessly, "Keep your voice down. It will be disturbed by the sound."
The mimosa plant was indeed startled by Wu Feng's loud voice; its leaves snapped shut and it let out a sharp "Ah—!"
Wu Feng leaned back and almost fell off the chair.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry—" He clasped his hands together and apologized repeatedly to the screaming woman.
Wu Feng poured some more cola, and the mimosa plant opened its leaves again, emitting soft, low-frequency sound waves.
This time, Niu Ma didn't speak, but quietly recorded the data, his eyes fixed on the screen, his mouth slightly open, like a primary school student listening attentively in class.
The orange cat watched all this from the side, yawned, and buried its head in its tail.
Wu Feng had been measuring for almost an hour, recording more than a dozen sets of data. He stood up, bowed to Lin Muyang, and asked, "Professor Lin, may I learn plant research from you?"
Lin Muyang glanced at him: "I'm not a teacher."
"Do you take on apprentices?"
"No, we won't accept it."
"Can I come here often?"
Lin Muyang was silent for a moment: "At most once a week."
Wu Feng's eyes immediately lit up: "That's enough! Thank you, Teacher Lin!"
He bowed again, then quickly packed up his equipment, slung his backpack over his shoulder, and left with his potted screaming plant.
As he reached the door, he turned back and called out, "Next time I'll bring Coke!"
The orange cat raised its head from its tail, glanced at the doorway, then at Lin Muyang, and let out a "meow," which probably meant "this person talks more than you."
In the afternoon, Lin Muyang officially began moving.
He stacked all the cardboard boxes on a handcart and carried them onto the truck one trip at a time, preparing to transport them to the new laboratory.
The guy with the middle finger was placed on top, with the flowerpot taped to the box. The girl who screamed was in a separate box, stuffed with foam around her sides.
The tomato vines were too long, so he found a bamboo pole and tied it to the flowerpot, letting the vines wrap around the bamboo pole like a mini flagpole.
The new laboratory is located in an abandoned flower market, consisting of three bungalows and a courtyard.
Lin Muyang had the walls painted white, the floor tiled with non-slip tiles, and the windowsills widened.
A huge greenhouse was built behind the yard, its transparent plastic film shimmering in the sunlight.
A wooden sign hangs at the entrance, which reads "Mukui Research Institute".
Xiao Kui wrote it; the characters were crooked, but large enough.
Lin Muyang placed the middle finger guy on the new windowsill. Sunlight streamed in through the window, falling on the middle finger guy's fingers.
The cactus gave the middle finger to the window, then changed it to a "Yay!"
"Do you like it here?" Lin Muyang asked.
The middle finger didn't move, but its finger changed back from "V" to the middle finger.
Lin Muyang nodded: "That means you like it."
He placed Screaming Sister next to Middle Finger Brother and planted the giant tomato in the small flower bed in the yard.
The tomato vines stretched out from the bamboo pole, tentatively explored in a new direction, and then retracted, curling into a circle.
The orange cat jumped out of its carrier, circled the new lab, sniffed every corner, and finally settled down next to the radiator, curling its tail up.
It glanced at the middle finger guy on the windowsill, who was busy giving the middle finger to the new lab and didn't have time to pay attention to it.
He placed the cot in the corner of the new laboratory. As soon as it was placed, Big Orange jumped on it, occupying the very center, lying on its back with its belly exposed.
Lin Muyang looked at it without saying anything, while the middle finger guy immediately gave him the middle finger.
Xiao Kui sent a message: "Brother, the Academy of Agricultural Sciences said the basic results will be out the day after tomorrow."
Lin Muyang replied with a single word: "Mm".
Xiao Kui texted again: "Brother, how's the new lab?"
Lin Muyang looked around at the white walls, new floor tiles, widened windowsills, and experimental instruments that were both new and old.
Big Orange is snoring on the cot, while Cactus is giving the middle finger in the sunlight.
He typed: "Okay."
After sending it, he thought for a moment and added, "It's better than the old one."
Xiao Kui replied instantly: "Brother, you actually said four words!"
Lin Muyang put his phone in his pocket and didn't reply.
Starting tomorrow, we can begin studying new induced mutations.
