Chapter 55 Arya's Secret
Meanwhile, on the other side—
When Arya walked out of the house carrying her wooden basket, the sun had just climbed to the treetops.
The basket contained several melons that she had just picked that morning, and a jar of pickled cabbage.
It was covered with a clean cloth and tied in a knot.
She stood at the door for a long time, hesitating.
He gripped the basket handle tightly, his knuckles turning white, then loosened his grip, then tightened it again.
It's been a long time since I've taken the initiative to talk to anyone.
She mostly just nodded to the people in the village, exchanged a few pleasantries about the weather, and then didn't know what to talk about next.
But I have to go today.
Lin Yu gave her a dress, smoked meat, milk, paid her taxes, and even made her a healing potion.
Protect her, stay with her, cherish her, love her, and more...
Arya counted on her fingers one by one, and by the end her nose felt a little sore.
She really wanted to give Lin Yu something, but she didn't know what to give him.
The things we have at home are shabby to look at.
After thinking it over, I decided to make a piece of clothing.
Her craftsmanship wasn't great, but it didn't matter if she wore them herself. However, she always made sure that what she gave to Lin Yu was the most carefully made and the best.
Therefore, we must learn.
It just so happens that Aunt Masha in the village is very skilled and has worked for the tailor shop in town.
Arya took a deep breath and started walking.
Sunflowers are planted on both sides of the village road. They are not yet in bloom, and their green leaves sway in the wind.
Several children ran past her, chasing a cloth ball, laughing and giggling.
Arya stepped aside to let them pass, watching them run away, a slight smile playing on her lips.
Aunt Martha's house was at the far east end of the village, a detached house with a grapevine growing in front of the door. The leaves climbed all over the vine and cast a shady spot on the ground.
Arya stood at the gate and called out.
"Aunt Martha?"
No one answered.
She called out again, this time a little louder.
The sound of a stool being moved came from inside the room, followed by footsteps.
The door opened, and Martha poked her head out.
He was in his sixties, with gray hair and deep wrinkles on his face, but his eyes were not cloudy.
The apron was covered in flour, as were the hands, so the person was probably kneading dough.
"Oh, Arya?" Martha blinked, her voice tinged with surprise. "A rare guest indeed. Come in."
She pushed open the door, wiped her hands on her apron, and invited Arya into the house.
Arya went in and placed the basket she was carrying on the table.
"I brought you some melon and pickled vegetables."
"You're here, why bring anything?" Martha said politely, but her hand had already lifted the cloth to take a look, and the corners of her mouth curled up:
"These melons look delicious, did you grow them?"
"Yes, the ones in the backyard are bearing a lot of fruit this year."
Martha carried the basket to the kitchen and came out with two glasses of water.
"Sit down." She sat down in the chair and patted the stool next to her.
Arya sat down, placed her hands on her knees, and twisted her fingers together.
Martha picked up her glass, took a sip of water, looked at Arya, and didn't urge her to speak.
There was silence for about ten seconds.
"Aunt Martha," Arya's voice was a little tense, "I want to learn how to sew from you."
Martha raised her eyebrows.
"Making clothes?"
"Mmm." Arya nodded, her fingers tightening their grip.
"I want to...make a garment for someone. But I'm not good at it, and I'm afraid I won't be able to wear it out."
Martha put down her cup, leaned back in her chair, and squinted at Arya.
The gaze wasn't sharp, but it made Arya feel uneasy, and her ears started to burn.
"Who is it for?" Martha asked casually.
Arya opened her mouth, then blushed: "A...a friend."
"A friend?" Martha's lips curved into a smile, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "A man?"
Arya didn't speak, but her expression answered for her.
It was as red as a ripe melon.
Martha laughed, not loudly, but her eyes narrowed into slits.
"Alright, I won't ask who it is." She stood up, went into the inner room, and took out a cloth bag.
When you open it, you'll find a pile of scraps of fabric, along with needles, thread, scissors, and a ruler.
"What kind of work do you want to do?"
Arya leaned closer, looked at the scraps of cloth, and reached out to touch them.
"A shirt," she said. "He's tall, broad-shouldered, and has a slim waist... a darker color would be better; he doesn't wear light colors much."
Martha listened and nodded, her fingers sifting through the scraps of fabric, picking out a few pieces of dark gray material.
"Will this work?"
Arya touched the fabric and nodded.
"OK."
Martha spread the fabric on the table and picked up a ruler.
"What about the size? How much do you know?"
Arya paused for a moment, then shook her head.
"I don't know the specifics... but I vaguely remember."
"Just remember that." Martha picked up a piece of chalk from the table and drew a few lines on the fabric. "Take a look and tell me how wide the shoulders are and how long the sleeves are."
Arya stood up and gestured to the outside of her shoulder.
"Probably... this far."
Martha glanced at it and drew a line on the fabric.
"How long are your arms?"
Arya raised her arm and gestured to the position of her forearm.
"Here."
Martha drew another line.
"waist?"
Arya measured her waist with her fingers, making out a width.
"About this thick."
Martha glanced at her, a slight smile playing on her lips: "You do remember that well."
Arya blushed again.
Martha stopped teasing her and started cutting the fabric.
The scissors slid along the chalk lines, making a snip-snip sound.
The scrap of cloth fell to the ground, floated for a moment, and then settled.
Arya crouched down to pick it up, but Martha pressed down on her shoulder.
"Don't pick them up, we'll sweep them up together later."
After Martha finished cutting the fabric, she stacked several pieces together and handed them to Arya.
"Go back and sew these pieces of fabric together first, let me see your stitches."
Arya took it, her fingers gripping the fabric, a little nervous.
"I didn't sew it well."
"It's precisely because it's not good that we need to learn." Martha sat down, picked up her glass, and took another sip of water.
"You've been alone for too long, and you're afraid to try anything."
Martha put down her cup and softened her tone: "Come tomorrow at noon, and I'll teach you. Learn a little each day, and you'll gradually get the hang of it."
Arya nodded, carefully folded the pieces of fabric, and put them into the basket.
"Thank you, Aunt Martha."
"No need to thank me." Martha waved her hand: "If you're willing to learn, I'm willing to teach you."
I watched you grow up. Although you're a bit introverted, you're kind-hearted. I'm so glad you came to talk to me."
Arya felt a pang of sadness as she listened: "Then I'll come again tomorrow."
"Okay." Martha stood up and saw her to the door. "Take care on your way."
