Chapter 118: Privileges Granted by the School
On the third floor of the administration building, the door to the dean's office was open.
Wei Yi followed Counselor Zhang to the door, glanced inside, and immediately understood what was going on.
Kong Fanmin wasn't the only one in the office.
Two vice deans were sitting on the sofa by the window. He recognized one of them as Lei Xingshan, who had shaken hands with him at the opening ceremony.
Vice Dean Lei was tall and thin, wore silver-rimmed glasses, and had his hair neatly combed. He sat there with his back ramrod straight.
His skin tone clearly indicated that he spent most of his time outdoors.
The other teachers sat around the coffee table on either side, each with a cup of tea in front of them. Judging from their attire and demeanor, they were all academics, not administrative staff.
Kong Fanmin stood up from behind her desk and greeted her with a smile.
"Wei Yi is here! Please have a seat. Teacher Zhang, you've worked hard too, please go back and get back to your work."
Counselor Zhang placed the folder on the desk, nodded, and left, closing the door behind him.
"Dean Kong, what can I do for you?"
He sat down on the sofa that Kong Fanmin indicated and accepted a teacup handed to him by a young teacher.
"No rush, no rush, let's have some tea first."
Kong Fanmin sat opposite him, her smile as kind as the old man next door. "How's things at the company lately? Is Tage's operation going smoothly? I heard you've expanded to a few more campuses recently?"
"It's alright. Senior Su is very involved; I'm just a figurehead."
"Wei Yi is too modest."
Kong Fanmin waved his hand and exchanged a glance with Lei Xingshan next to him.
Lei Xingshan adjusted his glasses and nodded slightly.
Kong Fanmin chatted with him for a few more minutes about school, asking him how his studies were going, whether he was getting used to living in the dormitory, and whether he liked the food in the cafeteria.
After a full five minutes of build-up and going around in circles, the conversation was finally handed over to Lei Xingshan.
"Old Lei, you're the head of the history department, so you should handle this."
Lei Xingshan placed the teacup on the coffee table, shifting his posture from leaning back to leaning forward, his attitude sincere.
"Wei Yi, let me get straight to the point." He paused, "We'd like to invite you to transfer to our History program in the College of Arts and Sciences."
Wei Yi raised his eyebrows, pausing for a moment as he held the teacup.
"Dean Lei, I studied Chinese language and literature."
"I know. You applied for Chinese Language and Literature in college, and your Classical Chinese score was also good."
Lei Xingshan pushed up his glasses. "But I've seen your attendance record. You attended less than a third of the Classical Chinese classes. Your 'History of Ancient Literature' teacher told me that he taught the class for half a semester and still doesn't know what you look like. He only knows that there's a student in the class named Wei Yi because someone always signs you in for him during roll call."
Wei Yi placed the teacup on the coffee table, his face calm and composed. "There's a lot going on at work."
"I understand."
Lei Xingshan nodded, his tone becoming even more sincere, "That's why I think that instead of just having a name in Chinese Language and Literature, you should come to our history major."
"There are many people in the Chinese Language and Literature department, and your special status makes you stand out and attract attention. If you miss even one class, it will be especially noticeable."
"It's different here. There are fewer than sixty undergraduate students in the entire year."
"This year's graduating class only has eleven freshmen. Eight master's students were offered, but only one showed up. Three doctoral students were offered, and none were accepted."
Wei Yi raised an eyebrow slightly.
He knew that the history major at the Southwest Associated University was actually the archaeology major.
He knew that archaeology was an unpopular major, but he didn't expect it to be this unpopular.
The United Nations University is at least one of the top-ranked universities in the capital.
The master's program had eight openings, but only one student was admitted.
Doctoral students get their heads shaved.
This isn't just cold, it's like the Ice Age.
"So I discussed it with Dean Kong and tailored a plan for you."
Lei Xingshan leaned forward, his eyes behind his silver-rimmed glasses shining brightly. "Since you're switching from Chinese Language and Literature, we'll create a unique teaching plan just for you."
"Oh? How do you mean by independence?" Wei Yi suddenly became interested.
Independence.
Isn't that just abusing privileges?
He really likes this.
"We offer a special pathway that compresses your four-year undergraduate degree into two and a half years, while simultaneously connecting it to a combined master's and doctoral program. During the undergraduate stage, customized courses replace regular credits, and during the master's and doctoral stages, you will directly conduct fieldwork and project research with my research group."
"In other words, it doesn't matter whether you come to class or not. Your research progress is your course progress, and your archaeological report is your graduation thesis."
Wei Yi placed the teacup on the coffee table, glanced at Lei Xingshan, and then at Kong Fanmin.
"But I don't know anything about archaeological research, and to be honest, I'm not really interested in it."
It should be said that there isn't.
But this is to give Vice President Lei some face.
He remembered that Lao Kong was retiring next year.
The new dean is none other than the current Vice Dean Lei.
A local official is never as powerful as a county magistrate.
Then naturally we should put it more tactfully.
Moreover, Wei Yi remembered that it was about ten years later when he was officially promoted to deputy director of the subdistrict office.
Dean Lei was promoted from dean to president, and was appointed president of the United Nations University.
Kong Fanmin added from the side, "Wei Yi, Lao Lei and I have discussed this matter several times. His meaning is very clear: as long as you are willing to transfer, the undergraduate course schedule, attendance requirements, and exam format can all be flexibly adjusted according to your actual situation."
"It's okay if you're busy with company matters, it's okay if you can't come to school, we don't care about these things."
"Look, you have Tage and Xinyi Catering. To be honest, your current net worth is probably less than all the teachers at the entire university combined."
"It's really inappropriate to have a student like you come to take undergraduate courses on time every day."
Kong Fanmin added, "This is also President Lu's intention. President Lu said that it's not easy for the United University to produce someone like Wei Yi in all these years. Since it's a special case, we'll treat it specially. As long as it can help your studies, feel free to ask."
Wei Yi picked up his teacup, took a sip, and did not answer immediately.
The office was quiet for a moment as the teachers waited for him to speak.
He leaned back on the sofa, his gaze sweeping from Lei Xingshan to Kong Fanmin, and then from Kong Fanmin to the cup of Lipton black tea on the coffee table that had gone cold.
He suddenly thought of something.
A few days ago, Su Lai, representing TAGE Technology, donated 500,000 yuan to the UN General Assembly.
When she made that 500,000 yuan donation, he felt like he was paying protection money.
Unexpectedly, the protection money had an effect just a few days after it was paid.
To retain him, the university essentially paved a highway for his academic path.
He was a poor student majoring in Chinese language and literature.
In the eyes of archaeologists, it has become a highly sought-after commodity that needs to be tailored to specific needs and acquired at any cost.
"Dean Lei, I have a question."
"you say."
"Archaeology requires going into the field, right?"
"Of course. Field excavation is the core of archaeology."
Lei Xingshan pushed up his glasses, his tone suddenly becoming extremely sincere, "But given your situation, Shimoda can go when it's convenient for you. Or let's put it simply, you can go if you want, or it's fine if you don't."
"After all, you still have matters to attend to with Tage and Guoxin Ping, which we understand. The rest can be discussed."
"I'll think about it."
