From Alchemy Apprentice to All-Powerful God King
Chapter 4: The Jade Market, Doing One Good Deed a Day
When they returned to the guild square, the blessing ceremony had already ended.
Matthew, however, pushed through the crowd and headed towards the guild, because their alchemy business was not yet over.
As soon as he approached the door, a reprimanding voice came from inside. Matthew carefully pushed the door open and bumped into Instructor Flynn reprimanding several apprentices.
Upon seeing Matthew, the other person raised an eyebrow and asked in a sharp voice, "Where have you been again?"
Matthew pointed to the bloodstains on the ground: "Take it to the mass grave and bury it. It's too slow for me to do it alone."
Upon seeing this, Instructor Flynn immediately realized what had happened. He had initially thought that the young apprentice had left on his own, but he hadn't expected him to be dead.
However, his expression quickly changed, and he looked at Matthew with admiration, even his attitude was different from how he treated others.
"Why aren't you helping? Next week's monsters, five extra for each person! Matthew doesn't need them."
Immediately, complaints arose in the alchemy workshop, and some people looked at Matthew with resentment, blaming him for the incident.
But no one dared to say anything, because it was the mentor's decision, unless they wanted to be the second apprentice of the day.
Instructor Flynn then distributed the materials to be refined, but soon someone noticed something was wrong: this week's materials were less than the previous requirement of refining only ten.
"Advisor, did you send too few materials?"
Among the apprentices, one who was slightly older and had a shrewd look with narrowed eyes spoke up to ask a question.
"Is it not enough? We've always given you almost twice the amount of materials needed to refine magical insects. If you weren't secretly selling them, how could it be insufficient?"
Mentor Flynn turned around with displeasure, looked at the squinty-eyed apprentice who had questioned him, and then said, "You'll hand in 20 next week."
Carter's expression turned ugly. He had only asked casually, but he hadn't expected it to become a negative example. He could only blame it all on Matthew, and looked at the latter with a sinister gaze.
However, Matthew wasn't too concerned, because the jealousy of these apprentices was nothing to fear for him, who had already refined the demonic insects and possessed magical power.
The other apprentices kept their lips tightly shut, while looking at Carter with a hint of schadenfreude.
After receiving the materials, the apprentices scattered in a flurry, fearing that Instructor Flynn would add a few more magical insects to their list.
Matthew, on the other hand, walked home in a cheerful mood.
Since I transmigrated here, today has been the most perfect day.
Just as I walked through the alley and reached my front door, I heard someone calling my name from ahead.
"Matthew! You're finally back."
Looking up, I saw Jimmy squatting at my front door.
He had a bamboo basket slung over his shoulder and held under his arm, filled with a thick layer of steaming hot pancakes.
"I came as soon as the blessing ceremony ended. Why are you so late?"
Jimmy shoved the bamboo basket directly into Matthew's arms.
"Eat quickly, it won't taste good if it gets cold."
Matthew, who hadn't eaten all day, didn't hold back. He picked up a piece and stuffed it into his mouth. The soft and sweet taste instantly filled his taste buds.
"Eat slowly, my mom's cooking is pretty good, isn't it! By the way, did you see the goddess Elena today? She's so beautiful!"
Jimmy, who followed Matthew into the house, handed him a kettle and asked him something.
Matthew shook his head. He had been busy burying the body all night, and by the time he got back, the event had already ended.
"No, I was busy helping my advisor and missed it."
"That's a pity, you didn't see it, she was smiling at me."
It was getting late, so Jimmy left after showing off for a while. He had to go back to the shop to help prepare the waffles for tomorrow morning.
Looking at the bamboo basket on the table, Matthew fell into deep thought. Since he came into this world, only Jimmy's family had treated him well.
He didn't know why either, but it was probably because he had saved Jimmy, a chubby boy, from the pond when they were kids.
After eating and drinking his fill, Matthew took out the demonic insect that had died in the mass grave, put it in a sealed jar, and hid it under the bed.
"Sell it tomorrow; there's no point in keeping it."
……
The next morning, just as dawn was breaking.
Matthew put on his long robe and black hat, intending to change them upon arrival to ensure his identity wouldn't be exposed. He then headed straight for the only jade gambling site in Vale.
As soon as I arrived at the entrance, I saw a large number of gamblers gathered outside, waiting for the game to start.
"As expected, no matter where you are, the gray industry is always the most profitable."
Matthew only glanced at it and didn't go any closer. He wasn't there to gamble on stones today, nor did he have the money to gamble.
However, just as he turned around to go around to the back door, he bumped into someone.
"Matthew! You're here to gamble on jade too?"
The person who arrived was Carter, who had been given extra "homework" the night before.
"Just passing by." Matthew shook his head, while reminding him, "Instead of wasting time gambling on stones, you should hurry up and refine your self-destructing bugs."
Carter, however, looked displeased upon hearing this. He walked past Matthew and headed towards the jade market, saying, "Mind your own business!"
Seeing this, Matthew stopped paying attention; good words are useless against a damned devil.
[A daily good deed has been detected]
[Do one good deed a day: 20/100 experience points]
Good deeds are rewarded; your luck increases by 1 point today.
"Huh? This counts?"
Matthew was somewhat surprised when the notification from Another World Record suddenly popped up.
I never imagined that my offhand words could turn into a good deed.
"Never mind, let's get down to business."
After walking around the jade gambling grounds a few times, Matthew changed his clothes and then knocked on the back door.
Boom...boom...boom...
After waiting for a moment, footsteps came from inside the door, and then the half-closed wooden door was pushed open a crack.
"If you want to gamble on jade, go through the front door; the back door is closed!"
"I'm here to sell things, good stuff."
Matthew reached out and pressed the wooden door shut again, then took out a sealed jar containing the demonic insects and peeked it through the crack in the door.
The next moment, the wooden door was slowly pushed open.
A rather plump stone servant poked his head out, looked around to make sure there was only one person before speaking.
"Come in."
As soon as Matthew entered, he saw piles of magic stones on the floor, most of which were gray whetstones.
In this world, gambling on stones is not actually gambling on stones.
Instead, they gamble on the magical insect that has a probability of less than one percent appearing in the stone.
In some special mountain ranges, a very small number of demonic insects will hibernate and petrify themselves to survive, and only a very small chance of them surviving will emerge; the vast majority will starve to death.
Of course, if you're incredibly lucky, you might just get a Tier 2 demonic insect directly.
However, most of them are actually fakes put in by the gambling stone market, with dead insects added.
"Alive or dead?"
Stone Servant's words pulled Matthew back to reality, gesturing for him to take out the demonic insect for a look.
"Dead, but very fresh."
Matthew threw the demonic insect over directly, and the stone servant caught it and examined it.
"It really just died. Five gold coins, deal."
"That's too little."
"At this price, if you think it's too low, you can take a few gray whetstones with you."
"Alright."
Seeing that there was no possibility of a price increase, Matthew reached out and took the five gold coins handed to him, and then casually picked up three magic stones from the ground.
They then quickly left the jade gambling site.
At the same time, Carter, looking utterly dejected, came out of the front door.
"This damn luck is worse than staying home and refining insects."
Just as he was about to go home, he saw a well-dressed figure walk away from the back door.
"That's... Matthew?"
Carter squinted, watching the familiar figure disappear into the distance, sensing a secret.
"Wasn't he just passing by? What was he doing going to the back entrance of the jade gambling market?"
Carter crept closer to the back door of the jade gambling site, and as soon as he got close, he heard conversations coming from inside.
"We've already checked; this demonic insect just died yesterday, but there might still be some alive inside him."
"Hmm, send someone to find out the details."
"Don't worry, boss, everything's ready. We'll make our move tonight if all goes well."
