From humble beginnings to the pinnacle of life

Chapter 13 The beginning is always the hardest.

Looking at this life-saving money, most of the embarrassment and pressure in my heart instantly dissipated, and a surge of warmth rushed into my heart.

I could no longer maintain my composure and immediately moved closer to my cousin, excitedly saying:

"Brother! My dear cousin! You're my savior! I'll remember your kindness for the rest of my life!"

As I spoke, I bent down and reached out to massage my cousin's legs to show my concern.

"Brother, you've been delivering food all day, rain or shine, you must be exhausted. Take a rest, let your cousin give you a good massage!"

My cousin waved his hands dismissively, rolling his eyes as he interrupted me:

"Stop! Stop right now! This is too cheesy, it's giving me goosebumps!"

I straightened up, scratched the back of my head, and chuckled to myself.

His playful laughter subsided, and his expression turned serious: "I'll make time to go to your courier station tomorrow to check things out and see what's going on."

"No problem, you're welcome anytime." I nodded emphatically, feeling much more at ease.

The next morning, I went to the courier station.

My cousin couldn't come with me because of the overwhelming number of food delivery orders during the morning rush hour; he'll have to come later.

When I arrived at the station, I found that the store door was already open, and I could hear the sounds of goods being moved inside.

A young man in his early twenties, dressed in simple work clothes, was busy loading piles of express delivery packages onto an electric tricycle.

I stepped forward and tentatively asked, "Are you Yang Hao?"

He stopped, straightened up, and turned to look.

He had ordinary features, a tanned complexion from years of outdoor work, and clean, honest eyes.

He looked me up and down, then nodded and said, "I'm Yang Hao. And who are you?"

I put on a friendly smile and extended my hand, saying, "Hello, I'm Lin Ye, the new station manager who called you last night."

"So it's Station Master Lin!" Yang Hao immediately realized and his tone became much more polite.

"No, no, don't call me that. Just call me Brother Lin or Brother Ye."

As I spoke, I glanced at the packages already piled up in his car and asked in confusion, "Why are you out delivering goods so early? You don't need to rush like this."

Yang Hao smiled helplessly, bent down to move the goods again, and said:

"I'm the only employee at our station right now, and there's no one to cover my shift. All these packages have to be delivered that day, and if I don't come out early, I simply won't be able to finish."

Hearing this, I looked at the mountain of packages and then at Yang Hao, who was working tirelessly in front of me.

After a few seconds of silence, I managed to squeeze out only one sincere sentence: "Thank you for your hard work."

"It's alright, I'm used to it. The volume of goods is just so-so," Yang Hao said, shaking his head lightly.

I took out a cigarette from my pocket and handed it to him: "Have a smoke and take a break."

"Thanks, Brother Lin."

Yang Hao took the cigarette, and I immediately took out my lighter and stepped forward to light it for him.

I took the opportunity to say, "If you're not in a rush to deliver, let's talk about the situation at the station. I've just taken over and don't know anything, so I need your guidance in many areas."

Yang Hao glanced around the dilapidated and deserted shop, exhaled a puff of smoke, and said bluntly:

"Then I'll be honest, and please don't take offense. This site is a complete mess; it's impossible to make any money from it. Otherwise, Liu Dong wouldn't have sold it off at such a low price and run away."

I lit a cigarette and asked in a low voice, "If you can't make money, why haven't you left?"

Yang Hao sighed softly, a hint of helplessness flashing in his eyes: "I had planned to resign a long time ago, but I still had a backlog of packages to deliver. One should finish what one starts. After I finish this batch of packages, I'll prepare to look for a new job."

I originally thought he had an emotional attachment to the station, but I didn't expect that he stayed until the end out of a sense of responsibility.

His sense of responsibility alone makes him worthy of my keeping.

I nodded, and then said sincerely, "Yang Hao, stay and work with me."

Yang Hao paused for a moment, then shook his head with a wry smile: "Brother Lin, I think you're a very honest person, completely different from the shrewd and stingy Liu Dong. But I'm not lying to you, this mess at the station really can't make any money, and me staying here would just be a waste of my time."

"I spent all my savings to take over this site because I want to turn things around and make money with it. Trust me this once, stay, and I promise you won't work for nothing."

Yang Hao lowered his head and remained silent for a moment, seemingly weighing the pros and cons.

A few seconds later, she looked up at me and asked a practical question: "So how is the salary calculated?"

"You were previously paid by the piece; how much could you normally earn in a month?"

"With this dismal number of orders, even if I work myself to the bone for a whole month, I'll only make a little over four thousand at most, and sometimes I'll even have all sorts of miscellaneous fees deducted from my pay," Yang Hao said, his tone full of helplessness.

I quickly calculated in my mind and then decisively said, "Look, I've just taken over the site, so order volume definitely won't skyrocket in the short term. I won't give you that uncertain piece-rate system; I'll offer you a fixed monthly salary of six thousand!"

Upon hearing this, Yang Hao was completely stunned, his face filled with disbelief.

"Six thousand? Really?"

I smiled frankly: "I keep my word. I don't seem like someone like Liu Dong, do I?"

Yang Hao looked me over carefully for a moment, then nodded with a smile: "That's true, you're much more pleasing to the eye than Liu Dong. Okay, I'll stay! I want to see how you're going to revive this nearly bankrupt website, how you'll bring it back to life!"

"Great!" I was delighted. "Go and get busy with the deliveries first. When you're done, we'll discuss the follow-up work and salary in detail."

"No problem, Brother Lin!"

He nodded, got into the tricycle, and left.

I walked into the store, straightened the crooked shelves, and tidied up the items on them, cleaning up the mess little by little.

After tidying up briefly, I sat down at the only old computer in the store and continued to frantically study the relevant knowledge about express delivery station operation and customer acquisition.

With a weak foundation and little experience, the only way to turn things around is to work harder and be more dedicated than others.

Time passed slowly, and after an unknown amount of time, the roar of a motorcycle came to a stop at the door.

My cousin came in looking travel-worn, having just finished delivering takeout during the morning rush hour, with fine beads of sweat still on his forehead.

He glanced up at the dilapidated and desolate scene inside the shop, his brows furrowing instantly, his face filled with worry:

"Yoko, this place is so run-down... Will we be able to make it here?"

I picked up a cigarette, tossed one to him, and said, "It's all about human effort. Just because others can't do it doesn't mean I can't."

My cousin shook his head helplessly, but didn't say anything more.

Just then, a black rugged SUV suddenly stopped at the station entrance, exuding a powerful and imposing aura.

The car doors opened one after another, and four or five burly men covered in tattoos got out.

The burly men exuded a menacing aura, clearly street thugs who were not to be trifled with.

Without saying a word, the group walked straight into the store.

My cousin froze instantly, instinctively moving quickly to my side and saying in a low, nervous voice:

"Yezi, something's wrong! These guys look like gangsters, they're up to no good, be careful!"
