The Demon King is back, leading adorable kids on an adventure around the world!
Chapter 189 The Student's Challenge!
Huaxia Martial Arts Academy is located in a wide-open area in the south of the city, covering a large area.
The school gate is made of stone, and five large characters are engraved on the lintel. The calligraphy is strong and elegant, clearly the work of a master.
There is a stone pillar on each side of the entrance. The pillars are bare, without any inscriptions, but they are polished very smoothly.
Niannian stood at the doorway and looked up: "Wow, it's much bigger than I imagined."
Inside the college, directly opposite the school gate is a wide main road paved with bluestone slabs, with two rows of sycamore trees planted on both sides. The trees are lush and their canopies intertwine overhead, forming a long, shady green passage.
At the end of the main road stands a main teaching building with gray-white walls and neatly arranged windows on the front. Sunlight shines on the glass, reflecting off it and making it look bright and spacious.
There is an open space on each side of the main road.
On the left, there was a patch of blue bricks with neat outlines drawn on them, and several people were standing at the edge of the area.
The area on the right is larger, with compacted soil on the ground, surrounded by a ring of low wooden stakes, resembling a martial arts training ground.
Niannian stood at the intersection, looked around, and roughly counted.
There are seven or eight buildings on both sides of the main road, two playgrounds, three or four training grounds, and a building in the distance that looks like a dormitory building.
There were quite a few people walking around the school, in twos and threes. Some were wearing uniform training clothes, while others were wearing casual clothes. They all carried the air of martial arts practitioners to varying degrees.
"It's not that big." Xiao Jin walked ahead with his hands behind his back, looking around.
Niannian patted him on the shoulder: "It's bigger than your house."
Luo Nannan walked behind, slowing her pace and letting her gaze move slowly across the buildings and grounds.
She had seen a lot of things, but this was the first time she had ever seen a place like this.
Xiao Xiao walked beside her and pointed out the building on the left:
"That should be the library; the windows face south, so it gets good natural light."
"Little sister, you even know about lighting?" Niannian turned around to look at her.
"Back in the small world, my room window faced east," Xiao Xiao said. "It was brightest in the morning when the sun was out."
She said "Oh" once, but didn't continue.
They had only walked a few steps on the main road when someone noticed them.
A girl with a ponytail was walking across the street. When she saw Nian Nian and the others, she slowed down and tilted her head to look at them for a few seconds.
Another boy walked by and also turned his head to look.
The group of girls walked along the road, their heights varying greatly. The shortest one looked as if she were being carried by someone next to her, and she didn't look like someone who had come to register at all.
"What are those kids doing?"
"I don't know, maybe we went to the wrong place?"
"Why is that kid in the yellow shirt so short..."
Niannian heard this but wasn't annoyed. She waved her hand and said, "We're here to visit!"
The students looked at each other without saying anything and walked away, but their eyes kept glancing in their direction.
They walked for a while and came to the edge of the training ground on the right.
There were a dozen or so students practicing boxing on the field, lined up in several rows, following a young man in dark training clothes as he performed the movements.
The punches, the retractions, the steps, the turns—the movements were all perfectly synchronized, and the sound of each foot striking the ground was perfectly uniform.
The sun shone on them, and each of them had a thin layer of sweat on their foreheads.
Niannian leaned against the wooden stake and watched for a while. Xiaoxiao stood next to her, and Luo Nannan squatted down and reached out to brush away some soil from the ground.
Xiao Jin stood at the front, hands in his pockets, tilted his head and looked around for a while, then muttered something under his breath:
"All show and no substance."
The voice wasn't loud, but the sidelines were quiet, and those few words were clearly heard all the way to the front row of the training ground.
The punching motion paused for a moment, and a boy standing in the front row withdrew his fist, turned around, and looked in the direction from which the sound came.
He was taller than his peers, with broad shoulders, a furrowed brow, and sweat trickling down his temples.
"Who just said that?"
Xiao Jin didn't move, but raised her chin slightly and said arrogantly, "I said it."
The boy glared at him: "Say that again?"
"I said, flowery... fists... embroidered... legs."
Xiao Jin uttered each word slowly and deliberately.
Several trainees nearby also stopped, and everyone's eyes turned to the sidelines.
Niannian stood behind and quietly took half a step back. Xiaoxiao followed her and took a step back. Luo Nannan squatted on the ground and looked up.
Xiao Jin stood beside the wooden stake, his hands still in his pockets:
"The movements are synchronized, but the power generation is wrong. When punching, the shoulder moves first, and the fist falls apart before the power arrives, like dancing."
The boy blushed: "What do you know, you little brat who hasn't even grown all your hair yet? Come on up and try!"
Xiao Jin glanced at Niannian, who stood behind him, waved to him, and nodded twice, meaning: Go ahead, but don't go too far.
Xiao Jin pulled his hand out of his pocket, patted his clothes, walked to the edge of the training ground, stepped on the low wooden stake to flatten it, and bent down to enter the training ground.
"Shall we have a little sparring?" Xiao Jin said. "You can throw the first punch."
The boy didn't hold back; he shrugged and threw a punch at Xiao Jin's chest.
The force was considerable; the wind from the punch could lift the hem of one's clothes.
Xiao Jin sidestepped, his fist grazing past his clothes, and before he could stop, he stumbled forward two steps.
Xiao Jin stood still, tilting her head to look at him: "You used too much force, you can't stop."
The boy turned around, glared at him, and punched him again.
This punch was even faster than before, aimed straight for his face.
Xiao Jin leaned back slightly, and the fist passed right in front of his nose. He then raised his hand and patted the boy's forearm.
The force wasn't strong, but the boy's arm went numb, and his arm drooped for a moment before he could lift it up.
"What did you use...?" the boy asked, shaking his hand.
"It was just a tap! Your arm was too tense; it couldn't withstand the force."
Xiao Jin answered lazily.
The boy was not convinced and rushed up to throw three more punches, each one faster than the last, but all of them missed.
He lost his balance at the last moment, tripped over his own feet, and stumbled forward. Xiao Jin stepped aside and reached out to support him from behind.
"Be steady, you can't even stand up straight."
After catching his breath, the boy stopped making a move, glanced at Xiao Jin, and stepped aside.
Several students gathered around and watched.
A thinner boy took two steps forward: "I'll give it a try."
Xiao Jin glanced at him: "Come on."
This one is more agile than the previous one; the footwork changes, and it sways left and right twice before throwing a punch.
The first punch grazed Xiao Jin's shoulder, and the second punch came towards his stomach. Xiao Jin tucked in his stomach, and the fist passed by just past his clothes.
The third punch was a wide swing. Xiao Jin ducked to dodge it, then gently flicked the man's wrist with his other hand, causing the man's punch to go completely off course and forcing him to turn around before regaining his balance.
"Your punching style has too many openings; you can't even retract your punches when you hit thin air."
The skinny boy pursed his lips, tried punching twice more, but still couldn't touch anyone.
Finally, he leaned on his knees, catching his breath: "Why are you like an eel? So slippery..."
Xiao Jin glared at him, cursing inwardly: "I am a true dragon, and you dare to say I'm like a mudfish? In the past, you would have been dead long ago..."
Another one came up next to us, this time a girl, who was shorter than the previous two.
But her punches came quickly, landing three punches in quick succession on Xiao Jin's shoulder and chest. The third punch was short, and Xiao Jin didn't dodge it completely, her sleeve getting grazed.
"Oh, I got some dust on my sleeve." Xiao Jin looked down at his sleeve and dusted it off.
"You played very well."
The girl withdrew her fist and stepped back without saying anything, but she didn't continue either.
A dozen or so people had already gathered at the sidelines, forming a semicircle, all watching.
Niannian crouched behind the wooden stakes, peeking through the gaps at the action on the field.
Xiao Xiao stood next to her, while Luo Nannan remained squatting in place, slowly drawing circles on the ground with her finger.
Qiqi stood next to Qianqian and asked softly:
"Isn't Brother Jin amazing?"
Qianqian didn't answer, but nodded.
The challenge on the field continued, and another person came up who was a head taller than Xiao Jin. He looked sturdy and his punches were much more stable.
After exchanging blows with Xiao Jin seven or eight times, Xiao Jin didn't really fight back, mostly dodging and deflecting the force.
But the man's fist never actually landed on him.
After his final punch missed, the man stopped and stood still, saying, "I'm not going to fight anymore, I couldn't hit him."
Xiao Jin stood opposite him, her breathing steady: "You're not bad either, your center of gravity is more stable than theirs."
The man glanced at him and said, "Thanks."
The area around the training ground had quieted down, and the boy who was defeated first stood in the crowd.
He crossed his arms and looked at the center of the field, his expression unreadable, whether it was resignation or something else entirely.
"Make way, everyone."
A voice came from behind the crowd, and the people on the scene automatically made way to both sides.
A middle-aged man emerged from the back of the crowd, wearing a dark coach uniform with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and several old calluses on the back of his hands.
He walked to the sidelines, looked at Xiao Jin on the field, and then at the students surrounding him.
"What's going on?" he asked, frowning.
"Coach, he..."
The first boy spoke up and briefly recounted what had just happened.
When the coach mentioned that "he said we played like we were dancing," his gaze swept across Xiao Jin's face.
"How many people did you shoot?" the coach asked Xiao Jin.
Xiao Jin held up three fingers: "Three or four, I guess, I don't remember clearly."
The coach nodded and flexed his wrists: "I've trained for a few days too. Let me spar with you."
There was a moment of silence on the sidelines. Niannian stood up from behind the wooden stake, dusted off her hands, and took two steps toward the sidelines.
Xiao Xiao stood up beside her, and Luo Nannan also stood up.
Xiao Jin looked at the coach. The coach wasn't very tall, but he stood there very steadily, like an ancient pine tree that never moved.
He put his hands in his pockets and replied with a single word: "Okay."
