Chapter 18: First Day at Work
Orian Foster glanced at Jude and casually pointed to an empty compartment in the wardrobe: "That will be your storage locker from now on."
"Yes, Captain Foster!" Jude saluted Orion Foster with great tact, showing no airs despite his 'powerful' background.
Foster's reaction was indifferent: "He's starting work today?"
Connor hummed in agreement: "I'll show him the way briefly; you can teach him the rest."
"Understood." Captain Foster nodded. "Anything else?"
"No." Connor glanced at the time on his watch. "I'll go rest first. You guys carry on."
After Connor left, the once relaxed lounge remained awkwardly quiet.
Dozens of prison guards looked at each other, exchanging silent glances.
Captain Foster, without any hesitation, asked the question everyone wanted to know: "Is the warden your brother?"
"Yes," Jude readily admitted.
"Are you just here to go through the motions, or what?" Captain Foster then sought to ascertain Jude's purpose for joining the prison.
"I'm here to work honestly!" Jude said, standing ramrod straight. "You can order me around as you please!"
With such a powerful background, yet only working as a regular prison guard, it seems he's not her biological brother.
The prison guards who had been silently observing knew what was going on.
"Understood." Captain Foster glanced at his other men behind him, and seeing that they had all changed their clothes, he walked out of the lounge. "Follow me."
Jude, along with the other four prison guards, followed Captain Foster back to the first floor.
The first floor is exceptionally spacious, with part of it facing inwards serving as the prisoners' canteen, and two downward staircases on either side.
Captain Foster paused briefly on the first floor, pointing to both sides: "This building has two underground floors. The first floor is the general prison ward one, and the second floor is the general prison ward two. Each ward has its own staircase leading to the first floor."
"Understood." Jude easily noted it down.
"The job duties in the regular prison ward are quite simple. Every morning, we bring the prisoners to the canteen in batches for lunch, and then escort them to the factory to work. The prisoners don't have a lunch break at noon, so we need to deliver their lunch to the factory. Every afternoon from four o'clock, the prisoners have a fixed one-hour exercise period. We have to keep a close eye on them during that time to prevent them from gathering together and having unnecessary interactions. At eight o'clock in the evening, we bring them back in an orderly manner..." Captain Foster explained the job duties as he led his men down the left staircase to the basement.
More than 600 prisoners are held on the basement floor.
The overall layout resembles the Chinese character "皿" (mǐn).
Three long corridors run through the entire length of the building, with densely packed individual cells on either side.
Besides Captain Foster and his men, several other groups of prison guards went to different corridors, opened the cell doors, and escorted the prisoners wearing leg irons to the canteen.
Jude sniffed around and felt that the stench of sweat and urine here wasn't much worse than in the cheap apartments at the docks, so he didn't lose his composure.
"Be alert when escorting prisoners. If they do anything that makes you feel threatened, you have the right to use your baton to discipline them until they obey your orders." Reaching the end of the central corridor, Captain Foster called to one of his men, "You guys, give a demonstration."
"yes!"
"yes!"
Several burly prison guards pulled out keys, opened the nearest cell door, and sternly urged, "Come out! Stand still!"
Most of the prisoners were numb and did not dare to cause trouble or defy the guards. They all obediently stood in line against the wall outside the cell.
Before long, thirty prisoners had gathered in the corridor.
In comparison, Foster's group of five prison guards, including Jude, seemed rather outnumbered.
What Jude was unaware of was that a prison guard to prisoner ratio of about one to five, like the Royal Capital Heavy Prison, was already a rather optimistic situation.
In some economically disadvantaged prisons, where corruption even exists, the ratio of one to twenty prisoners can reach as high as one to twenty.
"Turn left, let's go!" Several colleagues, gripping batons, escorted the prisoners toward the first-floor cafeteria.
"Captain," Jude said, following Captain Foster, "with so many of them, won't there be a riot?"
Since many of them are death row inmates and will die sooner or later, logically speaking, there will always be some troublemakers who will incite others to riot in order to save their lives.
The prison guards were basically only equipped with batons, and given their numerical disadvantage, they were probably no match for the guards.
"Our management is stricter than you think. Although there are occasional disturbances, there has never been a large-scale riot." Captain Foster pointed to the whistle hanging around his neck. "In addition, a fully armed security team is stationed on the first floor. As soon as they hear the whistle, they will come to suppress it immediately."
"Understood."
Breakfast in the prison canteen was simple: a pound of dark bread and a glass of water.
Once their ten-minute mealtime was over, the prison guards escorted them away to make room for the next group of prisoners.
After leaving the regular prison building, the prisoners formed a long line and walked in an orderly fashion toward the gate on the west side that connects to the outer ring wall.
Everywhere you look, there are two armed prison guards on watch.
Each prisoner was accompanied by a prison guard every few meters on either side.
Jude followed Captain Foster, his mind frequently flashing back to the prison break movies he'd seen before: "Captain, have any prisoners ever successfully escaped?"
"No," Captain Foster replied.
Ok……
Escaping from prison is definitely not a simple matter...
Jude turned his head and took a deep look at the special prison building that held the wizards and resonance sorcerers, before finally passing through the gate and escorting the prisoners to the factory.
The factory has three production areas, which are responsible for sewing, weaving and producing license plates respectively. There are also two teams of armed prison guards who patrol back and forth.
After bringing this group of prisoners in, Captain Foster, along with Jude and other prison guards, escorted three more groups of prisoners in succession.
It took more than an hour just to escort them from the cell to the canteen and then from the canteen to the factory.
But this does not mean the end of the work.
They also need to return to the prison area to direct another group of prisoners to empty the wooden buckets in each cell used to store urine and feces, and then supervise these people to clean the cells to prevent the prison area from becoming too unsanitary and breeding bacteria and infectious diseases.
After finishing all the miscellaneous tasks, it was already 10:00 AM.
Captain Foster and his men took a short rest in the shade. Another blond prison guard took out a cigarette case and handed one to each of his colleagues.
"I don't smoke, thank you." Jude thanked the other person.
"The prison's shifts are conducted in teams, so whether it's a day shift, a night shift, or in a regular ward or a special ward, we'll be working together from now on." Captain Foster took a drag of his cigarette. "While you have some free time, get to know each other. Ask away if you have any questions."
