In the name of the true god

Chapter 20: Getting Along and Striving

The prison guards' meals were much better than the prisoners'. Every meal included bread, corn, and potatoes as staple foods, as well as stew, boiled beans, eggs, bacon, and coffee.

If there is group physical training, a small amount of pork or beef will be provided as an extra.

The only drawback is that only prison guards on duty can eat for free; guards on the night shift who want to eat lunch in the canteen during the day have to pay for it themselves.

Jude, who was already starving, took his plate, grabbed two ears of corn, an egg, half a plate of stew, and a small amount of bacon, and returned to the table to feast.

Seeing this, his other colleagues believed his earlier statement even more.

If someone is truly pampered, even if they are not picky, they will never feel "happiness" from eating these ordinary meals.

Ten minutes later, after Jude wolfed down his food, the others had only eaten about half of their meals.

He wasn't particularly interested in coffee, so he poured himself a glass of water and waited for the others while drinking it: "Captain, how often do we change cell blocks?"

"We rotate every Saturday, one week at a time. Next time it'll be the regular second ward," Captain Foster replied slowly, swallowing the food in his mouth.

"Is the switching of prison wards random, or do the four wards rotate?"

Captain Foster had already taken another spoonful of stew, so "Fat Man" Allen said for him, "It's a rotation. First, it's the regular ward one, then the regular ward two, the heretics ward, and the death row and solitary confinement ward."

Jude nodded thoughtfully.

In other words, I have one week each month to find opportunities to contact the Involved Wizard and the Resonance Sorcerer.

One week to listen to the lectures, three weeks to digest the information.

Hmm, that's a pretty reasonable model!

However, even if they are on guard duty separately, according to prison regulations, they must be in pairs. I will have to find a way to get my other colleague away so that I can have a chance to communicate privately with the wizards and resonance sorcerers involved.

Thank goodness.

The heresy ward will be open until next week, giving me ample time to familiarize myself with the prison environment and develop a detailed plan.

correct!

One more thing!

Jude suddenly remembered another priest, Rodney, who was suspected to be the one in charge of investigating the dock fire.

Since they had taken the photo to bartenders and other people for identification, it means that the priests had most likely already confirmed the fat wizard's identity.

Meanwhile, Connor and Priest Rodney seem to have a good relationship. I need to think of a way to use Connor to pry out the fat wizard's true identity from Priest Rodney!

So next, there are three things that need to be secretly carried out.

First, summarize all the major events that have occurred around the world over the past twenty-nine years, and then selectively reveal them to Edmund.

Second, when it's time to go to the heretical prison, try to get rid of your companions and create opportunities for you to have private conversations with the wizards and resonance sorcerers.

Third, relying on her brother Connor's connections, she verified the fat wizard's identity and then uncovered a series of mysteries surrounding her.

At first glance, the first task seems the easiest to accomplish.

As long as the newspaper has past special editions, and as long as he's willing to pay, he can somehow obtain a batch of intelligence that is crucial to Edmund.

The latter two things must not be rushed, as they both involve priests and "heresies." If one is not careful, one will arouse suspicion and fall into an abyss of no return.

in the afternoon.

Work remains busy.

They first went to the factory to take over their shift and stand guard for two hours, and then rushed to the exercise area to patrol the perimeter wall.

Patrols mainly involve two things.

If prisoners during their exercise period get too close together and might be having a secret conversation, it is necessary to shout loudly to tell them to spread out and maintain distance.

Furthermore, if fights break out among prisoners, immediate intervention is required to suppress them and escort these offending prisoners to a special cell block for solitary confinement in the death row and solitary confinement area.

The duration of solitary confinement varies, and is accumulated based on the number of times a prisoner violates the rules each year.

First it was three days, then a week, a month, and the longest was half a year.

The longest period was six months, simply because almost no prisoner could remain conscious for an extended period in a dark, confined space where they could not communicate with others.

Anyone who is confined for six months will either go insane or commit suicide.

This is also the fundamental reason why, even though death row inmates and prisoners in solitary confinement do not need to work, no prisoner would still choose to stay there if given a choice.

Let's have a fight...

Jude paced along the wall, muttering to himself as he watched the weary prisoners.

If a fight breaks out, I'll have a reason to use the pretext of escorting someone to familiarize myself with the special prison building beforehand.

"What are you thinking about?" The poet Anders asked with difficulty, noticing that Jude was somewhat distracted.

"It's nothing," Jude shook his head. "Hey, poet, do these prisoners often fight?"

"No, no, no..."

"No fighting?"

"No, not much, too much, also, also, not much, not much, not much, not much."

There's still some hope!

"They don't have much entertainment, and sometimes when they've been holding it in for too long, they'll fight."

"I see..." Jude looked at the 'poet' Anders, "Poet, you've been reciting poetry since you were a child? Was it useful?"

"It's better than before," said the poet Anders. "I love reading Dylan's poems the most."

Jude, as if struck by a sudden thought, chuckled and suggested, "How about we try something different? Like singing?"

"Sing, sing, sing a song?"

"I've met people before who stutter when they speak but sing fluently. Why don't you give it a try?"

"I, I, I, I can't sing," the poet Anders said somewhat embarrassedly.

"Singing isn't a big deal, is it?" Jude tried to recall the songs, but couldn't think of any that were familiar or catchy enough in the other world. Finally, a flash of inspiration struck him, and he enthusiastically sang a children's song from his original world: "Sing along, twinkling star, how I wonder what you are..."

"One, one, one, one, one, one..."

"Twinkle, twinkle, little star."

"One, one, one, one, one, one..."

The poet Anders' face turned bright red; the more shy and nervous he became, the less he could utter a single word.

Jude couldn't help but chuckle at the sight.

Captain Foster, who was patrolling nearby, immediately strode over and sternly reprimanded him: "Don't make fun of Anders."

"Oh, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry..." Jude apologized repeatedly to the "poet" Anders.

The poet Anders blushed and smiled, "N-nothing, Jude...jude...jude...jude...jude wanted to help me."

"Take it slow," Jude reassured him. "Humm the melody first, then sing as slowly as possible."

"One, one, one, one, one, one..."

Captain Foster stared for a long time, confirming that Jude really meant no harm and that the two got along quite well. In the end, he only reminded him, "Don't teach Anders anything wrong, lest the situation worsen."

"I, I, I, I, I, I..." The poet Anders tried to explain something, but it only proved that his communication skills were now even more chaotic.

"Never mind, let's just recite poetry instead..." Seeing this, Jude didn't dare to help anymore.

The prisoners were allowed to enter the exercise area in batches, so the total exercise time lasted for about two hours.

It's very regrettable.

There were no prisoner fights today.

However, Jude was not in a hurry. After all, it was only his first day on the job. It would be wishful thinking to expect things to be full of variables and to easily get things started right away.

As Edmund mentioned, even for someone with his high comprehension, it would take about half a year for a wizard to advance from the first to the third rank.

Adding to that the need to learn the similarity law of resonance sorcerers, I'll probably have to spend at least a year or two in prison.

If you broaden your time horizon, you'll actually have quite a few opportunities to seize.

Six p.m.

After their shifts in the exercise area ended, Jude's squad began to take the prisoners from the factory and exercise area back to the regular prison building for meals and then back to their cells in batches.

After finishing all that and having dinner at the prison guards' canteen, it was already close to 8 p.m.

The night shift guards gradually came to relieve them.

Connor, the older brother whom I parted ways with in the morning, also appeared in the temporary rest room for prison guards on the second floor of the general prison building.

"Brother, you're here." Jude had just changed into civilian clothes, took off his prison guard uniform, folded it neatly, and put it in the closet.

"How is it?" Connor asked.

"It's pretty good. Although it looks like I'm on duty all day, it's not nearly as tiring as being a stevedore at the dock." This was Jude's honest feeling.

"Did anything unpleasant happen?"

"No." Jude stretched. "Everyone is very nice and knows their place. They didn't ask me anything I shouldn't have."

Connor was relieved and nodded to Captain Foster beside him, "Then do a good job."

Jude grunted in agreement: "Brother, you're here for the shift?"

"Yes. Putting aside my position as a first-level warden, I am also a priest of the Holy Wind Church stationed at the Royal Capital Heavy Prison, so I spend most of my time patrolling the special ward building. I came to this building just to see if you're settling in," Connor replied.

Jude's eyes lit up.

Who knows when the prisoners will start fighting? Even if they do, I might not be the one escorting them. My brother is in charge of the heresy ward, should I use his position to go and check things out?

Whether it works or not, we should at least give it a try!

Thinking of this, he didn't rush to close the wardrobe: "Brother, I'm new here, would you like to show me around the special prison building beforehand?"

Connor raised an eyebrow: "Aren't you tired?"

"Not tired at all, this is nothing," Jude said, looking full of energy.

Connor thought for a moment, seemingly unfazed by his brother's enthusiasm: "Put on your guard uniform and come with me."
