Chapter 84 Investigation
Chapter 84 Investigation
At 7:30 a.m., the two prison guards on the day shift climbed the watchtower. As they took the bolt-action rifles that had just been unloaded from Jude and Allen, they asked curiously about the several corpses placed on the open ground of the outer ring and what had happened with the bursts of gunfire that had been heard near the prison earlier.
Jude and Allen were both preoccupied, only saying that the matter was related to the Holy Church and heresy, and then they went down the ladder to the ground one by one.
"Is everyone alright?" Captain Foster asked each member as he counted the team members.
"fine."
"fine."
The five team members answered in unison.
Captain Foster paced back and forth before the lined-up crowd, hands behind his back: "I only just learned some of what happened today from my superiors. In short, this was a deliberate ambush set up by the Holy Church in conjunction with the capital's heavy prison against heretics—"
The group was on duty in the watchtower and witnessed almost the entire event, so they could roughly guess what had happened without Captain Foster's explanation.
Aside from Jude and Allen feeling sorry for the fate of another group of their kind, "Big Brother" Killian, "Handsome Guy" Colin, and "Poet" Anders were all filled with lingering fear.
A sudden transfer.
They didn't give the prison guards a chance to shirk their responsibilities.
If they were unlucky enough to be on night duty in the heretic ward this week, they would likely be the ones dragged out this morning to "lure the heretics" and engage in a fierce gunfight with them.
Captain Foster could guess what they were thinking, but his tone remained as serious as ever as he gave them instructions: "As per the instructions from above, no one is allowed to spread this information outside. The complete report will be based on the joint report issued by the Holy Church and the Royal Capital Heavy Prison. Our subsequent work will not change. After breakfast in the cafeteria, everyone should go home and rest early. Be on duty promptly at 7:30 pm."
"Yes."
"Yes."
"Disband."
Killian, Colin, and Anders called Jude and Allen to go to the cafeteria together.
Jude and Allen each gave reasons to decline.
After his colleagues left, Jude handed the house key to Allen: "Don't climb through the window this time. There's also some food at home, you can have a bite."
""
"————Okay, I'll be going now." Allen took the key and walked quickly towards the outer ring of the prison.
Jude walked with him for a short distance before parting ways at the entrance of the administration building. He then went up to the top floor alone and knocked on the door of his brother Connor's office.
"Knock knock knock".
""
"Knock knock knock".
He maintained a steady, intermittent knocking for over a minute, but there was still no response from inside.
Clearly, Connor was not in the office.
"Should we go find your brother and sister-in-law?" Steele asked.
Remembering Connor's reminder from yesterday, Jude abandoned the idea and turned to go downstairs to the front of the special prison building.
Having just completed a trap, Connor, as the chief warden of the Heretic Ward, was not in his office and could only handle official business in the Special Ward building.
Meanwhile, the special prison building remained on high alert. Even the day shift guards who were on duty in the death row and solitary confinement areas had to line up in long queues and undergo full body searches before they could enter.
"What are you doing? Get in line!" The prison guard standing guard at the main entrance of the special prison building frowned and urged Jude, who was striding forward, to back away.
Jude did not listen and calmly stood in front of him: "Please pass on a message to Warden Connor Viera for me, saying that his brother Jude Viera is waiting for him outside the building."
""
Upon hearing this, the prison guard looked at him with renewed apprehension: "You are Jude?"
"Yes," Jude nodded.
The Royal Capital Heavy Prison has hundreds of guards on duty at different times and in different areas. Even Jude didn't recognize many of them, so it's perfectly normal that the other guards didn't recognize him either.
After confirming the identity, the prison guard went to the guard post next door and made a phone call.
He quickly returned to Jude and said politely, "Warden Connor said he would come to see you shortly, please wait a moment."
""
"Thank you." Jude stepped back to a spot that was neither too close nor too far, and waited quietly for Connor to appear.
More than an hour later.
Jude's legs were starting to ache from standing for so long before Connor finally came out of the building and headed towards him.
"Brother, are you alright?" Jude greeted him with a concerned expression.
"I'm fine." Connor's eyes held a complex expression. "You knew everything?"
"I was on night watch in the watchtower and I saw your movement," Jude explained briefly. "Captain Foster also told us about it during the shift change."
,
Connor nodded slightly to himself. "What do you want?"
"It's nothing, I just saw you leading people to ambush the heretics, and I was worried you might get hurt."
"You're not injured."
'
"This ambush..." "That's none of your business. Go back to sleep." Connor said, then turned and left without looking back.
Jude stared at Connor's retreating figure, somewhat taken aback.
Why does he seem a little unhappy?
"I didn't go to see my brother and sister-in-law again without permission." Steele—
Could it be that the ambush didn't go as smoothly as expected?
When Allen was on the watchtower, he specifically counted the number of priests.
They returned with three fewer people than when they set out.
Could it be that all three priests are dead?
The fact that they were able to kill three priests while facing more than a dozen priests and dozens of armed prison guards should further prove that there are fourth-order entanglement wizards or resonance sorcerers among this group of heretics.
Unable to extract information from his brother Connor, Jude could only piece together the existing clues and draw some conclusions that should be reliable.
He didn't linger, quickly walked out of the prison, and drove back to Hearthstone Street.
Before going upstairs to go home, he didn't forget his appointment with Edmund in the mysterious space, so he first checked his email.
Sure enough, there was a thick envelope inside, addressed to Jude Viera.
Edmund's execution skills are truly impressive.
Jude sighed silently, then, remembering that Chairman Frost and Allen were still waiting for him at home, he left the envelope in the mailbox to avoid them noticing anything amiss.
"Knock knock knock".
"throat."
"Come in quickly."
Jude returned upstairs, and Allen quickly opened the door to invite him in.
Chairman Frost sat on the sofa, and after the door closed, he got straight to the point: "Alan has already told me about what happened last night. Have you found any new leads?"
"Yes," Jude said. "I think one of the four like you arrested this time is very likely to be a fourth-tier Entanglement Wizard or Resonance Sorcerer, just like you!"
