In the name of the true god

Chapter 9: Law of Contact and Law of Similarity

Sitting on the third-class tram leading to the dock area, the light in Jude's eyes vanished without a trace.

All my efforts this week have been wasted.

Meimei originally planned to go live with her brother, but who would have thought that her brother was in prison...

Although this means I'm living a life where I don't have to worry about food and drink, it's not what I expected at all!

"well……"

With a sigh, Jude crossed his arms and pondered what to do next.

First of all, like a moth drawn to a flame, breaking into prison to rescue his brother is out of the question; nothing is more important than his own second life.

Secondly, with his savings running out, if he decided to stay at the dock, he would have to work from dawn till dusk every day. But even with such hard work, the money he earned each week was just enough to cover his food and rent expenses.

To reiterate, the margin for error is too low. The depressed economy forces him to work step by step, and any slight mistake could trigger a chain reaction that could irreversibly collapse his life.

The last road...

Jude thought of the original owner of this body's father.

Going back to Beipu City to stay with my father means I won't have to worry about food and lodging for a while. My father has a short temper, so what? He's experienced the hardships of life; what's a little scolding from an elder?

Ah!

It's settled then!

There are still five days until the next rent payment. I need to work hard during these five days to earn enough for my train ticket home!

Back at the dock, Jude, who was somewhat deflated, was no longer so tense. He splurged on a pound of bread, a stew, and a light beer at the tavern, satisfying his taste buds which had been dull for five or six days. Only then did he return to his cheap apartment and lie down in bed, completely satisfied.

I've been in this other world for a week now, without even realizing it.

He seemed to have gotten used to falling asleep with the low temperatures at night, and the air was no longer unbearable. After all, he couldn't tell which smelled worse, the bed or the clothes.

"well……"

Despite his usual optimism and gratitude for his newfound life, Jude's loneliness and confusion left him feeling down and unable to fall asleep for a long time.

He put his arms behind his head, listening to the snoring of the other workers in his cell, his thoughts in disarray.

How can I better survive in another world?

How exactly can one make full use of supernatural abilities to become stronger?

How can I unravel the mysteries surrounding me?

Before he knew it, it was late at night. Jude, still wide awake, pulled his left hand out from under his head and examined the Möbius strip ring on his index finger in the dim light.

It's not shameful to pawn the ring for some money, but knowing that it contains an amazing secret, it would be foolish to sell it casually.

But how exactly can we return to the mysterious space?

We can't just keep "supporting" them like this...

Just as Jude was deeply troubled by this, even considering whether to risk setting the fire again, the Möbius strip suddenly emitted a suction force, pulling his consciousness back into the black and white world.

I rely on!

real or fake? !

Having learned from his previous experience, Jude quickly recovered from his dizziness and then looked around in surprise and delight.

Edmund Ravenscrown, dressed in black trousers and a loose white shirt, exuding an elegant air, stood not far behind him.

Their eyes met, and then they both smiled.

"I thought..." Jude turned to Edmund, his words tumbling out in agitation.

Edmund offered no comment and went straight to the point: "Did you do something special that activated the ring again?"

Jude calmed himself down a bit, then shook his head: "I did try putting the ring back on my finger, but there was no reaction for several days."

Edmund said thoughtfully, "It seems the ring doesn't need to be activated deliberately; it will take effect on its own at a specific time."

"A specific time?"

“Yes.” Edmund rolled up his sleeves and glanced at the motionless hands of his watch. “I noticed that there was a full month between these two entries into the mysterious space. If this isn’t a coincidence, then we’ll meet again on this day next month.”

A month?

Jude slowly began, "It should have been exactly one week here."

Edmund raised an eyebrow, appearing remarkably calm: "...Our time flows aren't equal, but that's not surprising now. By the way, I still don't know your name."

"My name is Jude Viera." Jude snapped out of his daze and realized that this meeting would be of great significance to him, so he immediately spoke frankly, "Edmund, actually, I hid some things from you last time."

Edmund was not surprised at all, and even responded with full understanding: "It's perfectly normal to be a little wary after just meeting. So, are you willing to talk now?"

Jude hummed in agreement: "I... am both an Entanglement Wizard and a Resonance Sorcerer."

"That's impossible." Edmund didn't think Jude was joking, but he still seriously denied it. "Wizards and Resonance Sorcerers possess completely different powers, and anyone who tries to control both will die instantly."

Jude paused, taken aback.

You can't have the abilities of both a wizard and a resonant sorcerer at the same time.

So what's my situation?

He quickly continued to reveal the inside story, explaining in detail how the fat wizard had approached him, patted a ball of golden light into his chest, and finally left behind the suicide note and the ring.

"It's a legacy." Edmund frowned.

Jude was completely confused: "Inheritance? What does that mean?"

Edmund's gaze became slightly complicated: "This is a long story. What do you know about the involvement of wizards and resonance sorcerers?"

"I know very little," Jude said frankly.

Edmund calmly explained to Jude, "The power that connects wizards and resonators comes from two great laws. These two laws are not only the foundation that maintains the operation of the world, but also the key to overturning the world, and they transcend the elements of earth, wind, water, and fire."

"What are the two major laws?"

"The Law of Contact and the Law of Similarity"

Contact law?

Similarity law?

Jude asked sheepishly, "I've never heard of that before. Could you explain it in more detail?"

Edmund patiently continued, "Entanglement wizards and resonance sorcerers possess the ability to manipulate the Law of Contact and the Law of Similarity, respectively. The strength of their abilities fundamentally depends on the depth of their understanding of these two laws. As for what these two laws actually mean, in short, the Law of Contact is the connection between things and causality, while the Law of Similarity is the resonance between appearance and essence."

The connection between things and cause and effect.

The resonance between appearance and essence.

Jude seemed to understand but not quite: "That's why they're called Entanglement Wizards or Resonance Sorcerers."

"You could say that." Edmund nodded slightly, casually brushing his half-long blond hair behind his ear. "Furthermore, based on the observations of many predecessors, it's basically certain that the number of involved wizards and resonance sorcerers is constant. Once they die, the power of the Law of Contact and the Law of Similarity within them will randomly transfer to other people who are twenty-one years of age or older. This random way of gaining power is called awakening. And if involved wizards and resonance sorcerers actively transfer their power to others, that's the second way I just mentioned—inheritance."

Jude recalled the moment when the fat wizard slapped the golden light into his body.

He pondered for a moment, then voiced his conjecture: "The price of inheritance is death?"

"Yes. The only price to actively transfer the laws of contact and similarity within oneself is death," Edmund confirmed.

Jude then thought of another key point: "The day that fat wizard passed on the Law of Contact to me was exactly my twenty-first birthday..."

Edmund quickly concluded for him: "That means they've been watching you for a long time; it's a premeditated plan."

"But why did they target me? And why did they leave a will reminding me that I possess the powers of the Law of Contact and the Law of Similarity? And this ring, why did it happen to bring us together across time and space?" Countless questions flooded Jude's mind.

Even the most foolish person should realize by now that they must be hiding many secrets about themselves, otherwise there would be no reason for them to be chosen by that mysterious wizard and thus trigger a series of bizarre events.

Jude paced back and forth in small steps, trying to sort out the tangled threads.

Unfortunately, no matter how he pieced together the information, he could not synthesize a reliable truth.

"My father never mentioned anything special about the ring to me." Edmund remained calm, as if accepting whatever fate had in store for him. "I come from Nordonia, and I'm planning to travel the world to change people's prejudices against wizards and resonance sorcerers, and to overthrow the Holy Church's oppression of us... And the destination of this journey, I intend to set, is the Kingdom of Florence. If there truly is some shared secret between us, I will find it in the Kingdom of Florence."

Edmund's journey ended in the Kingdom of Florence.

This reminded Jude of the information he had found out—in the year 427 of the Divine Calendar, Edmund was arrested by Leonard, the crown prince of the Kingdom of Florence, and publicly executed in the square of the capital city of Florence in the same year.

Should we remind him?

If this most powerful entanglement wizard in history could still be alive today, I would have a powerful backer!

But if changing the past triggers a butterfly effect that affects the original owner of this body, then what about my second life...?

Forget it, let's put it on hold for now...

Anyway, Edmund in front of him was also 21 years old, and there were still eight years before he was arrested and executed. Some things, even if they had to be said, didn't need to be said so early.

"...I will also try to find out the fat wizard's identity. Once we know who he is, we will be very close to the truth." After meeting Edmund again, Jude felt a renewed sense of confidence to stay and develop his career in the capital.

"Well, at least we're not completely clueless," Edmund said methodically. "For example, the fat wizard left you a will reminding you that you've simultaneously become an entanglement wizard and a resonance sorcerer. Actually, it's quite simple to disprove this; you just need to try and see if you can actually use the power of the law of contact and the law of similarity."

Jude candidly explained his progress and concerns: "I have studied the contact law, but it can only be used to roughly determine my brother's location. As for the similarity law, I once saw a resonance sorcerer being publicly executed when I was a child. He seemed to have resonated directly into a pig and could never turn back. I am worried that similar problems may occur, so I have not tried it yet."

Edmund showed a slight surprise: "Oh? You've already studied the law of contact? What insights have you gained? Have you found your brother?"

"I've discovered that by questioning the people and things I've come into contact with, I can find the answers I seek. However, this consumes a lot of mental energy, and the information I can obtain is quite limited." Jude chuckled self-deprecatingly. "Ha... my brother, it took me almost six days to pinpoint his location, but I never expected him to be in the capital's heavy prison."

Edmund was startled.

Jude, who only acquired the Law of Contact seven days ago, has already used his ability to search for his brother for six days.

In other words, he learned the basic application of the law of contact in less than a day?!

That speed is truly astonishing...

While Edmund was secretly alarmed, Jude eagerly pressed for the key question: "Edmund, I want to know how to strengthen our control over the law of contact? And how can we safely apply the law of similarity?"

Edmund's gaze shifted subtly once again: "Your understanding of the Law of Contact is correct. The connection between wizards is about dealing with people and things. These people and things can be things you've personally come into contact with, things that others have possessed, or things that are indirectly connected through a third party."

really!

This is why he was able to directly pinpoint his brother Connor's location, and why Edmund touched him in an attempt to indirectly locate Connor!

Jude held his breath, his mind focused on only one thought—

So, how do you become stronger?
