Soul Returns to Hong Kong: From Tailor Shop to Richest Woman

Chapter 33 That Night, Two Boys Decided to Rely on Themselves

Su Jun did not argue back.

His eyes welled up with tears. Lin Ying was right, absolutely right! It wasn't a joke, it wasn't meant to scare anyone! Old Dou really was planning to remarry and have another child!

He used to think that his father's money was his own money, and that he could get it by shamelessly asking for it and getting a few scoldings in return.

But today he suddenly realized that the money had legs, and that once he had a new younger brother who was more obedient and knew how to please his father, the money would come to him on its own!

Su Jun sniffed, then suddenly grabbed Su Cheng's hand: "Brother! Let's go!"

"Hey!" Su Cheng staggered a big step as he pulled him, "What are you doing?"

Ignoring everything else, Su Jun pulled Su Cheng into the bedroom at the end of the corridor and slammed the door shut behind them.

Outside, Su Zhihao cursed, "What's wrong with you?"

Maria whispered, "Brother Hao, the second young master seems really unhappy."

"These kids are unhappy all the time, it's spoiled!" Su Zhihao leaned back, closed his eyes, and said, "When I was a kid, I didn't even have enough to eat, and they live in big houses and drive Mercedes-Benzes, how dare they be unhappy?"

In the bedroom.

Su Jun leaned against the door, and tears finally streamed down his face. He usually wouldn't cry even when Huang Sir scolded him mercilessly at school, and he would only wail stubbornly when Lao Dou hit his back with a board. But today, he truly felt like the sky had fallen, and he cried with utter despair.

Su Cheng was stunned by his younger brother's appearance: "Why are you crying like this?"

Su Jun forcefully wiped away his tears, choking back sobs as he cried out, "Brother, we're finished! Old Dou can't be relied on anymore!"

"Explain yourself more clearly."

"Didn't you hear that? He'll definitely remarry and have more children! Lin Ying is absolutely right!" Su Jun repeated Lin Ying's words to Su Cheng word for word that afternoon.

From "You're not an only child," to "Your father's money isn't your money," to "Your stepmother's whispers in your ear," and finally to the harshest question, "Does the young master who always gets the lowest score still have a place in this family?"

Su Jun cried and pounded the bed, "Brother! I used to think that bad grades were no big deal, as long as Dad would support me! But what about the future? What if there really is a new little brother who gets first place in school every year and clings to Dad, calling him 'Dad'! And our stepmother keeps nagging him that we're spendthrifts... How are we going to live?! We don't have a mother anymore!!"

Su Jun's words struck Su Cheng's heart like a heavy hammer.

Su Cheng stood by the bed, his face gradually darkening; at twelve years old, in the dead of night, he began to seriously contemplate his life for the first time.

Yes, the reason Lao Dou is still willing to give them money now is because he only has two sons. If there are one or even two more mouths to feed in the future, and they are mouths with better grades and smarter intelligence, why should Lao Dou give the lion's share to these two good-for-nothings who only know how to play games and read comics?

Faintly, Su Zhihao's cursing voice could be heard outside the room as he answered a phone call from the film set. The sound was distant and unfamiliar through the door.

Su Cheng looked down at his younger brother, who was sitting on the ground crying his eyes out; they were born to the same mother, who had abandoned them. Now, in this big house, they really only had each other.

Su Cheng took a deep breath: "Lin Ying is right."

Su Jun stopped crying and looked up at his brother in a daze.

"Old Dou can't be relied on." Su Cheng gritted his teeth. "Old Dou only cares about us now because we're the only ones he has. If someone else comes along later, who will he care about? What will our stepmother do to us? We can't control any of that."

Su Cheng walked over and pulled Su Jun up from the ground: "Relying on others is not as good as relying on yourself. Having your own resources is worse than having your own!"

Su Jun sniffled: "My foundation is so bad, Lin Ying forced me to do a lot of questions this afternoon and I only got a few right."

"If it's ruined, mend it!" Su Cheng pressed down on his younger brother's shoulder. "You spent the whole day with Lin Ying mending it, did it help?"

Su Jun desperately wanted to argue that it was useless, but the images of the apples and baskets Lin Ying had drawn for him that afternoon, along with the reverse decomposition of the word problem, clearly surfaced in his mind. It was far more effective than the school teacher reciting scriptures on the blackboard.

"It's somewhat useful," Su Jun honestly admitted.

"Then keep studying with her until you drop!" Su Cheng said firmly. "When she comes next week, don't cause any more trouble! If she tells you to write, you write; if she tells you to memorize, you memorize! At least get rid of that last place title! Otherwise, you won't even have the confidence to argue with your stepmother's new son!"

Su Jun was stunned by his brother's imposing manner, nodded blankly, and then realized what he meant: "What about you, brother? You skip class all day to play video games. If you're not capable either, who will protect me in the future?"

This question stumped Su Cheng, and his face flushed red to his ears. Yes, how was he any better than his younger brother? If he wasn't any better, what right did he have to be an older brother?

After a long while, Su Cheng made a decision: "I won't go out to play video games anymore."

"Huh?" Su Jun's eyes widened.

"When Lin Ying comes to tutor you next Sunday, I'll listen in too!" Su Cheng stared at the workbook on his younger brother's desk. "I might not be able to keep up with the St. Paul's problems, but I can learn the arithmetic thinking she uses. Besides, didn't she tell you that once your grades improve, she'll help you make money?"

"Shall we ask her next week how she plans to make money?" Su Jun asked tentatively.

"Ask!" Su Cheng decisively walked to the desk, picked up the exercise book Lin Ying had marked up in red pen, opened it to the first page, sat down in the chair, picked up a pencil, and said, "But before that, finish those twenty practice questions she left! If you dare to hold me back, I'll slap you first!"

"Write now? I've already cried so much!" Su Jun cried out in despair.

"Do you still want to be kicked out by your stepmother?" Su Cheng glanced at him coldly.

Su Jun immediately shut up, obediently pulled up a stool and moved closer to his brother, then picked up the eraser.

Outside the room, Su Zhihao was still on the phone arguing with the producer on set; inside the room, the two young masters of the second branch of the Su family, who had always regarded studying as worthless, opened their math workbooks for the first time at 10:30 pm with great seriousness.

Su Jun wrote two lines, then suddenly stopped and asked, "Brother, Lin Ying is coming next week. Do you think she'll laugh at me if she finds out I cried because of her tonight?"

Su Cheng stared at the equations in his notebook without even looking up: "She'll definitely laugh. But knowing her exploitative nature, she'll probably use all the time you want to spend crying as practice problems to force you to do them."

Su Jun: "..."
