Chapter 25: The Money Cat's Invitation
Following Ruby's advice, after copying Jeremy's label, Lee returned home ahead of schedule.
At home, Zoe showed no awareness of her status as an aristocrat. She curled up on the sofa, holding a book on her lap, carefully reading every word.
The fire crackled in the fireplace, and Lee decided to use her sister as a test subject.
"Sister, give me your hand. I've recently been researching Chinese culture and learned about a kind of divination called palmistry. I've heard it can tell you how long a person will live."
Zoe was somewhat surprised upon hearing this and held out her hand to Lee En. "Really? Let me try! I think I can live to at least sixty!"
The so-called palm reading is just a facade. He can only read the life line and career line. Whether this stuff is scientific or not is another matter.
However, it's perfect as a way to pique Zoe's curiosity.
Lee En grasped Zoe's hand and then activated the abilities associated with the "Master Thief" label.
With a clench of his right hand, something of some weight fell into his grasp.
Li En looked down and saw Zoe's small handbag, which contained little more than some loose change.
Looking at Zoe again, she was completely unaware that something of hers had been stolen, and was still asking Lee En with great interest how long her lifespan was.
"Hmm, it seems he can indeed live to sixty," Li En casually remarked, releasing her hand. "As long as you treat your brother well and listen to what he has to say."
Upon hearing this, Zoe immediately realized that Lee En was just teasing her, and she jumped up from her chair in anger, pretending to hit him.
Li En easily subdued her. With the added advantage of her innate superhuman strength, even a strongman who had trained for many years might not be able to defeat Li En.
"Stop fooling around. I found your handbag at the door just now. You should be thanking me."
Zoe took the handbag from Li En with suspicion. She remembered touching the handbag next to her just now. How did it end up in Li En's hand in the blink of an eye?
Li En sat down on the sofa next to him.
The moment my bottom touched the cushion, there was a knock on the door.
Lena arrived at the door, first peeking outside through the peephole in the door before opening it.
She seemed to exchange a few words with the person outside the door, then turned and went into the reception room, where she spoke briefly with Li En's father.
"What?" The father hesitated for a moment, then immediately got up, straightened his clothes, and hurried to the door.
Feeling something was off, Li En put down the book on mysticism and followed it to the front door.
Outside the door stood a tall, well-built guest, dressed in a long black uniform with a white shirt collar that sent a chill down one's spine.
A small metal buckle was pinned to his chest; Li En couldn't quite make it out, but he was clearly not a servant of an ordinary mansion.
"Greetings, Sir Wells," the steward said to Lee's father, "The Money Cat Salon cordially invites you to attend."
Outside the gate, a black carriage stood there, dignified and composed.
"But wasn't my application rejected?" The father froze, instinctively reaching for the rejection letter. "Are you sure you haven't made a mistake?"
The male servant nodded restrainedly. "It was indeed a mistake. Your application has been approved, and you are eligible to participate in the salon. This is our fault."
His body froze for a second, and Li En's father subconsciously let out a low chuckle.
"Haha, I knew it! I knew I could get things done through someone else. You must have made a mistake."
The father, who had been furious last night, suddenly perked up. "Lena, get me my best dress. I'm going to the Money Cat salon tonight, and I can't afford to lose face!"
Lena responded and turned to prepare clothes for her father.
At this moment, the manservant suddenly added, "Also, Sir Wells, you may bring one family member with you."
Bringing family members to the salon?
The father had never heard of such a rule; he remembered that only the invitee could receive an invitation.
If the invitee's partner is also eligible to attend, then that person will also receive an invitation.
Family members can come along – this is unheard of!
Seeing the bewildered look on Lee En's father's face, the manservant smiled and replied, "That's your privilege, Sir Wells."
privilege!
Upon hearing those two words, the father, who always cared about his reputation, immediately forgot all about his image.
Being able to bring an uninvited family member to a Money Cat salon is enough for him to brag about in high society circles.
"I see."
The father turned to ask for Li En and Zoe's opinions.
Zoe didn't really want to participate in these high-society social events. She didn't like being in the spotlight, and participating in these events felt like being treated as a commodity to be displayed, a feeling she hated.
Even women from noble families had no right to vote, no independent property, and daughters were regarded as family assets rather than independent individuals.
Political and business marriages are commonplace.
She didn't want to go down this pointless path.
After some discussion, Lee En reluctantly accepted the offer to attend in place of Zoe, the eldest daughter.
After changing into a proper evening gown, Li En felt that the clothes were too tight and she had a feeling of not being able to breathe properly. School uniforms or clothes worn by ordinary people were much more comfortable.
What was that saying again?
If you want to be prominent in public, you have to suffer in private!
Li En climbed onto the steps of the carriage and slipped inside.
The seats are quite wide and thick, and the surface seems to be covered with a layer of velvet, so soft that it feels like sinking into a ball of marshmallow.
Inside the carriage, there was even a folding table with perfume bottles and handkerchief boxes on it, as well as a fixed heater. Li En felt that this was not a carriage at all, but more like a mobile private meeting room.
The carriage slowly started moving and began to travel along the potholed streets of London.
Although the road was a bit bumpy at first, it became relatively smoother as we entered the affluent area of West London.
Outside the window, rows of tall townhouses stood side by side. Li En noticed the longing on his father's face.
The decline of the Wells family did not begin with Lee En's father's generation; it began as early as his grandfather's generation.
Therefore, even her father never lived in the wealthy areas of West London, and never integrated into the real upper class.
Being stuck in this awkward position, looked down upon by high society, yet considering himself superior to the middle class, Li En was willing to call his father the London Kong Yiji.
Soon, the carriage stopped in front of a mansion in Kensington.
The servant opened the carriage door for the two and ushered them into the building.
A servant at the door extended his hand. "Gentlemen, please show me your invitations."
"No need, they are special." The male servant explained on their behalf, and the servant at the door immediately understood and made way for them, "Please come in, gentlemen."
Li En followed her father into the building.
Upon entering, the entryway, though not spacious, is extremely tastefully decorated.
The floor was covered with a thick, soft carpet, so there was no heavy sound when you stepped on it.
The conversations and laughter of high society, which the father admired, came from the deeper part of the living room.
A servant carrying a tray passed by the two men and bowed to them in greeting.
Stepping into the living room, a group of high-ranking officials and dignitaries, whose very aura exuded the elegance of high society, gathered together, chatting about politics, business, and even gossip from the streets.
Li En looked around and quickly spotted a label in the crowd that read "genius of mysticism".
Great, it really exists!
Li En couldn't wait to go up to it.
The person with this label is a professor who looks highly respected. At this moment, he is chatting with a group of noblewomen about mysticism.
Tarot, alchemy, divination...
Although the content was only very basic, it successfully piqued the curiosity of these ladies, who all expressed great interest in the professor's research.
Of course, the professor might not be very interested in them; he would rather they suggest to their husbands that they contribute money to support their research.
Li En didn't care about any of that. After a cursory glance, he had already spotted two "mystical geniuses" and one "materialist warrior."
Today was a great day!
The only thing that bothered him was that Li En didn't see Ruby.
In an instant, Li En felt a chill run down his spine, and an unprecedented sense of crisis enveloped him.
Since this was the first time, Li En had little experience, so she couldn't immediately tell what had happened.
It wasn't until a flash of white light, like a hit reaction in a game, suddenly appeared in his field of vision that he realized what had happened.
The second effect of the "natural investigator" label is working!
"When someone tries to influence you using anomalies, you can vaguely sense the general direction..."
Li En read the second effect aloud and looked in the direction where the white light had appeared in his field of vision.
In this direction, there were numerous high-ranking officials and dignitaries, talking and laughing among themselves, seemingly without anything unusual happening.
But Lee Eun was certain.
There was someone or something in this direction that just attacked me!
Through the power of mysticism!
